Scholarship Winners
2014 Award Winners
The Perth Convention Bureau, with its major stakeholders the City of Perth and
Tourism WA, annually convene the Aspire Scholarships and Professional Developments Awards.
The Awards offer fi nancial support for the professional development of non-profi t association members
and university staff through attendance at an international conference within their discipline.
International conferences secured by this program have generated export income in excess of $100 million for
the Western Australian economy since its inception. In addition to the economic boost this provides, the program
delivers substantial knowledge sharing, international profi ling and advancement of the state’s many
sectors of expertise.

Driving Business Tourismin Western Australia
Associate Professor Sven Ouzman, Centre
for Rock Art Research and Management
Associate Professor Ouzman is an
archaeologist, educator and reader in
Kimberley Rock Art. The award will support
him to travel to Cape Town and present
a bid for Perth to hold the next Oxford X
International Conference organised by the
International Society for Archaeoastronomy
and Astronomy in Culture.
Edith Cowan University
Award Winner
Maryam Omari, Associate Professor,
Faculty of Business & Law
Associate Professor Omari is the leader of
an international research team exploring
cross-cultural issues in workplace bullying. She
will use her award to participate in the next
International Association of Workplace Bullying
and Harassment Conference and explore the
possibility of bringing the conference to Perth.
Doctor Chris Skinner, Notre Dame University
Medical School
Dr Skinner is the Domain Chair of Personal and
Professional Development at Notre Dame’s
Medical School and is instrumental in the
development of future health practitioners.
The award will enable Dr Skinner to travel to
Buenos Aires in 2015 to attend the International
Congress on Emotional Intelligence and support
Perth’s bid to host the 2017 event.
Giving West Award Winner
Tiffany Rochester, Senior Clinical
Psychologist, Kids R Kids
Ms Rochester holds a Master of Applied
Psychology and through Kids are Kids,
commenced her PhD in partnership with the
Telethon Kids Institute in July 2014. She will
use the award to attend the 2015 ACBS World
Conference in Berlin. ACBS World Conferences
have a mix of research symposiums and
intensive training workshops.
Professor Shaun P. Collin and Assistant
Professor Kara Yopak, School of Animal Biology
Professor Collin and Assistant Professor Kara Yopak
are expert researchers at UWA’s Oceans Institute.
Both will use their award to travel to the Sharks
International Conference in Durban, South Africa.
Whilst at the conference they aim to expand their
research opportunities and attract experts to Perth
where they hope to host the conference in 2018.
Associate Professor Mohamed Shahin,
Department of Civil Engineering
Associate Professor Shahin has published two
books, more than 90 papers and has been
the two-time recipient of Curtin’s Excellence
in Teaching Award. He will use his award to
attend the 14th IACMAG Conference in Kyoto
Japan in September and present his bid to host
the conference in Perth.
Professor Erik Champion, School of Media
Culture and Creative Arts
Professor Champion is responsible for
developing a new master’s program in
Cultural Visualisation at Curtin University. His
award will allow him to attend the CAADRIA
Conference where he aims to mount a bid with
Professor Sambit Datta to host the 2016 event
in Perth.
Murdoch University Award
Winner
Doctor Christopher Lee, Clinical
Psychologist and Senior Lecturer, School of
Psychology and Exercise Science
Dr Lee trains therapists in Australia and overseas
in the treatment of post traumatic stress and
personality disorders. He will use the scholarship
to present at the International Society for
Schema Therapists in Turkey this year and lobby
for the 2018 conference to come to Perth.
City of Mandurah Award Winner
Rebecca Cassells, Community Landcare
Offi cer, City of Mandurah
Mrs Cassells will use the support of the
scholarship to attend the Australian Association
of Environmental Education Conference in
Tasmania in November 2014. Her attendance
will enable her to collate educational solutions
to environmental pressures in the Peel area and
investigate opportunities for Mandurah to host
the event in the future.
Curtin University Award Winners
The University of Western Australia Award Winners
As a founding partner of the Perth Convention
Bureau in 1972, the City of Perth recognises
the importance of business tourism as a
signifi cant social and economic driver for the
city. Business tourism continues to play a
critical role in the development of the city’s
accommodation and venue infrastructure.
Monnia Volpi-Wise, Manager Prevention
Services, SIDS and Kids WA
Mrs Volpi-Wise is a manager and senior
educator at SIDS and Kids WA, the not-for-profi t
organisation which aims to save babies’ lives
through education and research and provides
grief support to those affected by the loss of a
child through Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
The City of Perth Convention Scholarship will
support Mrs Volpi-Wise to attend the ISPID
International Conference in The Netherlands
in September and attract both national and
international conferences to WA.
University of Notre Dame Australia Award Winner
Ms Tiffany Rochester and
Mr Kevin MacDonald.
