INTRODUCTION

About Rotaract Club of Kathmandu Mid-Town

Rotaract Club of Kathmandu Mid-Town, sponsored by RotaryClub of Kathmandu Mid-Town, is a youth-based, non political,

non religious, international social organization established in 1997.It is dedicated to serve and make a difference to the community

following the Rotary International theme of Peace throughService.

About Giving Hands-Enabling Mobility

It is estimated that, around the globe, thousands of people of all ages survive industrial,

agricultural, road-traffic and other accidents, acts of violence and war; as a consequence,

they suffer severe disabilities. Even some are born without limbs but are unable to obtaina functional prosthetic hand. Nepal is of no exception to these facts.

Giving Hands-Enabling Mobility is one of the

community service projects initiated by Rotarianmentor and advisor and the Rotaract Club of

Kathmandu Mid-Town.

The objective of the project is to provide aprosthetic hand to those with non functional arm

with the hand lost below the elbow to enable

mobility to perform simple day to day activities

Initial phase of the project: intensive and wide spread data collection

Sources: Hospitals orthopedic department, Army and police hospitals and cantonments,health centers, public sectors, voluntary, corporate and private organizations or clubs,

community and personal contacts.

Next Phase: Implementation on amassing of 50 or more pre-screened applicants,arrangements for providing a prosthetic hand free of cost from USA will be organized

and the recipients will be contacted upon arrival.

Target Group

A prosthetic hand that is being provided under Giving Hand-Enabling Mobility istargeted for all needy candidates, irrespective of cause, economic status, gender, sex,

religion, caste and ethnicity.

However, there are certain requirements that the candidate must meet so as to be eligibleas a recipient of prosthetic hand.

Some of the basic requirements are:

The candidate must be 2 years old or above. Minimum 12 centimeters of residual hand must be

present from the tip of the elbow to end of the cutpart.

There should be no open wounds and no unusualsensitivity on the residual hand.

There must be good flexibility and muscle tone inthe upper arm, joint and residual limb.

For double amputees, only one prosthetic hand willbe delivered per candidate.

What is Prosthetic Hand?

The prosthetic hand is an artificial device used to supplement the lost part of the hand

below the elbow. The Prosthetic Hand is not a medical device. It is a simple, low cost,durable, reliable and functional helping hand, constructed of cocoa puff color, injected

molded plastic, with brass and stainless steelmetal parts.

The prosthetic hand is resistant to water, heat,

dirt and salt, and it is easy to clean with just clearwater. It is strong and, when properly fit on the

recipients arm, can support more than 25 poundsof weight.

One size fits all recipients and functions as either the left or right hand. The hand is

attached easily and is easily removed by the wearer in a few seconds.

FINDING A RECIPIENT

Who can help us find a recipient?

Individuals, Hospitals and Health Centers, Public health agencies, Rotaract and other

youth clubs, voluntary, corporate and private organizations, Army and Police force.

How can you help us?

Individuals: can locate, liaison and promoteGiving hands- enabling mobility responds to the need of individuals with disabilityaffecting their hand. Every individual in the community and society can support the

program by helping to locate such needy person in their own locality. They can also serveas a liaison person between the club and the recipient candidate by making personal

contacts with the target needy individual helping to register their name for furtherproceedings.

Further, support would be through promotion of the program by sharing the information

regarding the project at their place of work, their organization, institute, club as well astheir families, friends and acquaintances. Active participation in our Giving Hand-

Enabling Mobility facebook campaign would also be of great help.

Hospitals/ Health Centers, Army and Police force cantonmentsSupport to the project would be by co-operation to share the required information of their

patients, who meet the requirements for receiving the prosthetic hand.

Public Health Agencies/ Voluntary, Corporate and Private OrganizationsOrganizations can respond to this project by helping to locate such recipients in their

organization or in their community through their network of staff and contacts. They canalso play a liaison role between the club and the clients.

Rotaract and other youth clubsA widespread support and leg working will be initiated among the youth i.e. Rotaract andvarious other youth clubs and college students. Their assistance would be to locate, help

in registering of recipients in filling up the Recipient Pre-registration Form available atour website and timely submission of the documents to the project coordinator.

How to find a recipient for a prosthetic hand?

Personal contacts: One could have known a person who meets the criteria forreceiving a prosthetic hand. S/he could be ones relative, neighbor, friend or

colleague.

Groups/Networks: The network of a club can be mobilized to find a potential client.The information regarding the project can be relayed within the clubs/organizationsso that members can contribute for the cause.

Through media: One having good relations with the media personnel can help us findthe recipient by helping us relay the project information through respective media.
