    What is informative speaking?

    Informative speeches generallyconcentrate on explaining telling how

    something works, what something means,or how to do something.

    A speaker who gives an informative

    speech usually tries to give his/heraudience information without taking sides.

    What is the goal of informativespeaking?

    Informative speaking offers you an opportunity topractice your researching, writing, organizing, and

    speaking skills. You will learn how to discover and present information

    clearly. If you take time to thoroughly research and understand

    your topic, to create a clearly organized outline, and topractice an enthusiastic dynamic style of delivery, youcan be an effective teacher during your informativespeech.

    What is the goal of informativespeaking?

    Since ultimately our daily interactions with otherpeople involve providing and receivinginformation, the purpose of thee informativespeech is to provide interesting, useful, andunique information to the audience.

    As a speaker, you must be dedicated to thegoals of providing information, and attempt atbeing appealing to the audience, in order for youto succeed as an informative speaker.

    Objects

    Speeches about objects focus on things existingin the world.

    Objects include, among other things, people,places, animals or products.

    Take note that you have limited time to talkabout your topic. You need to limit your speech

    and focus only on some or a particular aspect ofthat topic.

    Examples: tablet computers, Michael Phelps, thePhilippine flag, Mayon Volcano, buko pie.

    Events

    Speeches about events focus on things that happened,are happening, or will happen.

    When speaking about an event, remember to relate thetopic to your audience. A speech chronicling history isinformative, but you should adapt the information to youraudience and provide them with some way to use the

    information. Examples: how the invention of the wheel changed our

    lives, the advent of denim, how the EDSA revolutionunited the Filipinos

    Concept

    Speeches about concepts focus on beliefs, ideas, andtheories.

    While speeches about objects, processes and eventsare fairly concrete, speeches about concepts are moreabstract.

    Take care to be clear and understandable when creatingand presenting a speech about a concept.

    When selecting a concept, remember that you arecrafting an informative speech. Often, speeches aboutconcepts take on a persuasive tone.

    Concept

    Focus your efforts toward providing unbiasedinformation and refrain from making arguments.

    Because concepts can be vague, limit yourspeech to aspects that can be readily explainedand understood within the time limits.
