Giving a Multidisciplinary Video Conference
Presentation
Challenges
• Speaking to a camera
• Time delay when switching views
• Language accessibility
• Resolution of transmitted material– font size – complexity of material– slide format
Font Size:
14 pt is typical
28 pt minimumIf using 28 pt, Bold Helps
32-36 pt preferred
32-36 pt preferred
Use Plain Bold Fonts
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts (28pt Arial Bold)
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts (28pt Arial)
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts (28 pt Times New Roman Bold)
Probe Type
Discovery: Genes of interest for particular species
Positive: Probes to bacterial transcripts that are spiked into total RNA
Negative: Probes to bacterial transcripts that are not spiked into the total RNA and are used for negative control threshold calculation
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts that are neither part of the negative control threshold calculation nor the positive controls
Fiducials: Controls that the software package uses to grid the array.
Quality Flags
Good: No flags associated with this particular spot.
Empty: Spots near a background level where the mean background plus one standard deviation is greater than the signal mean.
MSR: Data points not provided (blank cell in excel worksheet) based upon quality control of manufacturing processes. Each array is scanned post-dispense and issues such as misfiring are labeled as MSR.
Poor: Spots identified based upon characteristics such as spot morphology or large interference in signal (such as a speck of dust).
Negative: Spots with an signal mean less than the background; intensity value is a negative number.
Typical presentation: 14 pt
Problems with Previous Slide
• Text too small
• Too much information
• Margins too small
• Language too complicated
Probe Type

Much easier to read: 28 ptBut still too complicated
Discovery: Genes of interest
Positive: Probes spiked into RNA
Negative: Probes not spiked into RNA
Less complicated, Larger marginsMakes point more effectively
Use Plain Contrasting Backgrounds
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts that are neither part of the negative control threshold calculation nor the positive controls
Use Plain Contrasting Backgrounds
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts that are neither part of the negative control threshold calculation nor the positive controls
Use Plain Contrasting Backgrounds
Black text on a plain white background has so much contrast it does not
project well.
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts that are neither part of the negative control threshold calculation nor the positive controls
Use Plain Contrasting Backgrounds
A light coloured background helps but still has a high contrast.
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts that are neither part of the negative control threshold calculation nor the positive controls

Standard light yellow on dark blue works well
-As part of a pharmacogenetics project, we screened exons and flanking intronic regions for variation in a set of 24 membrane transporter genes (96 kb; 57% coding) in 247 DNA samples from ethnically diverse populations.
-We identified 680 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), of which 175 were synonymous and 155 caused amino acid changes, and 29 small insertions and deletions.
-Amino acid diversity (NS) in transmembrane domains (TMDs) was significantly lower than in loop domains, suggesting that TMDs have special functional constraints.
-underlying assumption was that alleles that are functionally deleterious will be selected against and thus under represented at high frequencies and over represented at low frequencies.
-Green People had an excess of high frequency alleles in comparison to Blue People, consistent with a historic bottleneck. In addition, Blue People exhibited a much higher frequency of population specific medium-frequency alleles than did GreenPeople.
Another Bad Slide
Limit Page Content
Increase font size, Allow margins
Reduce content
Use no more that 6-8 lines per page
Allow no more that 4-5 major points per page
Remove jargon
- screened for inherited mutations in 24 genes from ethnically diverse samples
-680 mutations were identified
-155 of these caused amino acid changes
-assumption was that alleles that are functionally bad will be selected against
-Green people had more mutations than Blue
Simplifying Content can make it easier to present
Avoid Animations
Other: Probes to bacterial transcripts that are neither part of the negative control threshold calculation nor the positive controls

Moving Towards a New EraMolecularly targeted therapies
• Studies have shown that behind every type of cancer cells there is a unique set of abnormal molecules that help with their survival and growth.
• We are also studying ways to specifically inactivate these molecules.

Material that Projects Poorly
• gel • Flourescent image
If you must include complicated figures
• Give a copy of the powerpoint file to Cay or Kathryn the day before
• We will make and distribute copies
• Does not have to be the entire presentation
