Give Us This Day®Canticle of Zechariah (Benedictus) Luke 1:68-79

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathersand to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High;for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,to give his people knowledge of salvationby the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our Godthe dawn from on high shall break upon us,to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel 2:2-5

They are a rebellious house but shall know that a prophet has been among them.

As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speak-

ing say to me: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ances-tors have revolted against me to this very day. Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you.

r. (2cd) Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.

To you I lift up my eyeswho are enthroned in heaven—

as the eyes of servantsare on the hands of their masters. r.

As the eyes of a maidare on the hands of her mistress,

so are our eyes on the Lord, our God,till he have pity on us. r.

Have pity on us, O Lord, have pity on us,for we are more than sated with contempt;

our souls are more than satedwith the mockery of the arrogant, with the contempt of the proud. r.

A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians 12:7-10

I will boast in my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

Brothers and sisters: That I, Paul, might not become too elated, because of the abundance of the revelations, a

thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to

me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made per-fect in weakness.” I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong. The word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation Cf. Luke 4:18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,for he sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 6:1-6a

A prophet is not without honor except in his native place.

Jesus departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples. When the sabbath came

he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands! Is he not the car-penter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. The Gospel of the Lord.

ReflectionHard Hearts

When the Scriptures speak of hard-heartedness, they are usually referring to something deeper than we read into that expression. We think of a hard-hearted person as someone who is ungenerous, harsh, and even mean. The biblical ex-pression refers rather to an ongoing state of resistance to the truth—a hard heart is self-contained and complacent; it sys-

tematically defends against anything that could rupture the delusions behind which it shelters.

Hard hearts do not welcome prophets. When Jesus re-turned to his own clan, they did not welcome him or his message. Jesus himself was surprised at their lack of faith. His teaching made only a surface impression on them; its capacity to change their lives was blocked by their obstinate refusal to accept that there was before them something more than a familiar village tradesman. The disciples, likewise, are accused of having hard hearts when they fail to see the sig-nificance of events unfolding before their eyes (Mark 6:52).

This mental and spiritual blindness occurs when we allow ourselves to drift away from God; when prayer diminishes we are less open to be changed for the better. This estrange-ment is often accompanied by a disproportionate amount of time given to activities of little worth—entertainment be-comes a primary concern. Because we are lacking in self-knowledge, we become fearful of anything that might explode the myths by which we live. We exclude others, and all our energies are directed toward self-gratification and getting our own way. This is a life sentence to solitary confinement where there is no entry for any voice but our own. That is what it means to be hard-hearted. May God preserve us!

EveningGod, come to my assistance.Lord, make haste to help me.

(opt. hymn, pp. 368–75)Psalm 24:1-6The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness, the world, and those who dwell in it.It is he who set it on the seas;on the rivers he made it firm.

Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord?Who shall stand in his holy place? The clean of hands and pure of heart, whose soul is not set on vain things, who has not sworn deceitful words.

Blessings from the Lord shall he receive, and right reward from the God who saves him.Such are the people who seek him,who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

Glory to the Father . . .

Scripture 1 Corinthians 1:21-25

For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God

through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith. For Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who

are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

99July 8–14Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Within the WordSamaria and the Samaritans

Where is Samaria? Why does Jesus tell his disciples not to go there when Hosea says that God’s heart is moved with pity for them? Who is Ephraim? This week’s readings raise puz-zling questions.

The story begins in the tenth century BC. When Solomon’s son Rehoboam succeeded him as king of Judah, the south-ernmost tribe, the ten tribes of the north rejected Rehoboam and named another king. This split was age-old. About a century earlier Saul had held the tribes together, but after his death it took King David seven years to gain control of both Judah and the northern tribes. Now around 922 BC the king-dom was divided again.

This division meant they needed two of everything. Judah’s capital remained Jerusalem and people worshiped at the Jerusalem Temple. The northern territory, which represented more of the original twelve tribes, retained the name Israel. The north was also called Ephraim, for their largest tribe. Jeroboam, their first king, established two shrines toward the borders of his territory: one at Bethel and one at Dan. About a generation later the royal palace was built at Samaria, and it became the capital city.

The relationship between Judah and Israel was rocky. Sometimes they were friendly, and the royal families inter-married. Sometimes they fought. Both territories tried to be faithful to the worship of the one God. Prophets ministered in both regions: Elijah and Elisha, Amos and Hosea in Israel;

Isaiah and Micah in Judah. But Jeroboam’s shrines were a scandal to Judah. In the Jerusalem Temple the ark was the symbol of God’s throne. In each of the northern shrines Jeroboam installed a bull, probably also to symbolize the throne of God, but the prophets and historians of Judah called them “calves” and saw them as idols.

Israel, however, was situated too close to the threatening peoples of Mesopotamia. In 722 BC the Assyrians conquered Israel and not only deported many of their citizens but also imported people from five other groups they had defeated. The people left behind in Israel intermarried with these groups. Their descendants were called Samaritans for their capital city, Samaria. Judah survived a bit longer but eventu-ally was conquered by Babylon in 587 BC. Again people were deported, but they were allowed to live together and eventu-ally some of the exiles returned to Jerusalem. These people began to be called Jews, that is, people of Judah.

Thus the hostility between Jews and Samaritans is age-old. The Jews saw the Samaritans as worshipers of false gods and considered the only true kings to be descendants of David. They scorned the Samaritans as a mixed race, no longer descendants of Abraham and Jacob. Even in the Gospels, the attitude toward Samaritans is ambiguous. Jesus tells his disciples not to go to Samaria, but he also tells a story of a Good Samaritan and en-gages a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well in a fruitful conversa-tion. All of this raises important questions for us.

Who are the Samaritans today? Who are the people we consider “illegitimate” or whose worship we consider flawed? And how can we learn respect for those who are different from us?

Blessed Among UsServant of God Rose HawthorneFounder of the Servants of Relief for Incurable Cancer (1851–1926)

Rose Hawthorne was the third and favorite child of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the great American writer. Her father died when she was thirteen, a loss followed a few years later by the death of her mother. Bereft, Rose accepted the marriage proposal of George Lathrop, a young American writer, whom she married in 1871 soon after her twentieth birthday. The marriage dete-riorated, largely due to Lathrop’s alcoholism. For a time, a com-mon attraction to Catholicism held promise of restoring the marriage. In 1891 they were both received into the Catholic Church, but two years later they formally separated.

Finding herself alone in New York City, Rose felt called to some more heroic expression of her faith. She became aware of the plight of impoverished victims of cancer who were banished to die in isolation on Blackwell’s Island. She was determined to provide an alternative.

After obtaining a nursing degree, she began visiting and then inviting cancer patients into her own apartment. This became a full-time occupation. After the death of Lathrop she formalized her vocation by entering religious life. In 1900 she and a companion were received into the Dominican order. Six years later her own Dominican congregation was formally established and she became known as Mother Alphonsa. She died at the age of seventy-five on July 9, 1926, at the mother-house of her congregation in Hawthorne, New York.

My daughter has just died, but come and she will live.

While Jesus was speaking, an official came forward, knelt down before him, and said, “My daughter has

just died. But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live.” Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples. A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel on his cloak. She said to

herself, “If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured.” Jesus turned around and saw her, and said, “Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you.” And from that hour the woman was cured.

When Jesus arrived at the official’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd who were making a commotion, he said, “Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they ridiculed him. When the crowd was put out, he came and took her by the hand, and the little girl arose. And news of this spread throughout all that land. The Gospel of the Lord.

ReflectionThe Desert Blooms

I will lead her into the desert and speak to her heart.

Our desert journeys—whether brief or long, intense or mod-erate—and reflection on the desert can help us not only to survive but also to see the deep possibilities for enriched life in our own personal deserts.

The desert is silent and elicits silence—a silence that attunes us to a new range of hearing. And if we are to hear the word out of the depths of our own spirit, we must be quiet enough to attend. Silence attunes us to all dimensions of the word.

The desert is a place of solitude and invites me to go into myself and thus to enter into the ground, the basis, of rela-tionships. Such solitude opens in me a more profound capac-ity for true communion. In the Scriptures God repeatedly speaks to leaders in their solitude, preparing them for deeper communion both with God and with their people.

The desert in its stark terrain is utterly simple, and it calls me to strip off veneers and pretensions—elimination of the unnecessary—to come to a much more profound apprecia-tion of the gift of life and all that really sustains it. Jesus asked for the simplicity of the true child who has matured into adulthood. Thus, true simplicity enriches inner life.

In each instance—silence, solitude, simplicity—my rela-tion to God is opened and deepened, my capacity for relation to others is expanded and enriched, and I come to much greater self-knowledge and personal freedom. Thus, as we have said so often: the desert blooms.

MorningO Lord, open my lips. And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

(opt. hymn, pp. 368–75)Psalm 5:2-5, 8-9To my words give ear, O Lord;give heed to my sighs.Attend to the sound of my cry,my King and my God.

To you do I pray, O Lord.In the morning you hear my voice;in the morning I plead and watch before you.

You are no God who delights in evil;no sinner is your guest.

Yet through the greatness of your merciful love,I enter your house.I bow down before your holy temple,in awe of you.

Lead me, Lord, in your justice, because of my foes;make straight your way before me.

Blessed Among UsAugustus ToltonPriest (1854–1897)

Augustus Tolton was born a slave in Missouri in 1854. His mother escaped during the Civil War and took her three children north to Quincy, Illinois. There, Augustus was edu-cated in a Catholic school and decided that he wanted to become a priest. No seminary would take him. After private tutorials with a local priest he was accepted at a small Fran-ciscan school and eventually studied at the Urban College in Rome. Expecting to be sent as a missionary to Africa, he was instead sent back to the United States to work among the struggling black Catholic population.

Tolton was appointed pastor of a black parish in his home-town of Quincy, where his effective preaching drew many white parishioners—a fact that generated resentment from neighboring white priests. Eventually he was assigned to a parish in Chicago, but a sense of isolation remained, the bur-den of being the only black priest in America. He died on July 9, 1897, at the age of forty-three.

Tolton is remembered today as a pioneer, the first black priest in America who fully identified with and sought to represent the aspirations of African-American Catholics. He exposed the presence of racism in the Church while striving to witness to an ideal of equality and reconciliation within the Body of Christ.

“I really feel there will be a stir when I begin my church; I shall work and pull at it as long as God gives me life, for I see that I have principalities to resist anywhere and everywhere.”

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Hosea 8:4-7, 11-13

When they sow the wind, they shall reap the whirlwind.

Thus says the Lord: / They made kings in Israel, but not by my authority; / they established princes, but without

my approval. / With their silver and gold they made / idols for themselves, to their own destruction. / Cast away your calf, O Samaria! / my wrath is kindled against them; / How long will they be unable to attain / innocence in Israel? / The work of an artisan, / no god at all, / Destined for the flames— / such is the calf of Samaria!

When they sow the wind, / they shall reap the whirlwind; / The stalk of grain that forms no ear / can yield no flour; / Even if it could, / strangers would swallow it.

When Ephraim made many altars to expiate sin, / his al-tars became occasions of sin. / Though I write for him my many ordinances, / they are considered as a stranger’s. / Though they offer sacrifice, / immolate flesh and eat it, / the Lord is not pleased with them. / He shall still remember their guilt / and punish their sins; / they shall return to Egypt. The word of the Lord.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 9:32-38

The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.

A demoniac who could not speak was brought to Jesus, and when the demon was driven out the mute man

spoke. The crowds were amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “He drives out demons by the prince of demons.”

Jesus went around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the King-dom, and curing every disease and illness. At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”The Gospel of the Lord.

Communion Antiphon Psalm 34 (33):9Taste and see that the Lord is good; / blessed the man who seeks refuge in him.

Or: Matthew 11:28Come to me, all who labor and are burdened, / and I will refresh you, says the Lord.

ReflectionA Sly Instruction

Jesus is on the move, teaching, preaching, and healing. He is bringing his way of life to all who will hear him. His energy comes from compassion. The storyteller gives us a peek into the interior of Jesus and discloses what moves him to action. When he sees people troubled and abandoned, he identifies with them. His heart goes out to them. This is the prophetic “sigh,” the profound grief at the suffering condition of God’s good creation, a gut-wrenching sense that what Jesus is seeing shouldn’t be.

The prophetic protest at the way things are leads to a pro-phetic vision of how things should be. The images move from troubled and abandoned sheep to ripe grapes and bursting wheat. There is a possibility in this distress, a harvest ready to be gathered in. But who will do it?

The work that needs to be done is more than Jesus’ per-sonal predilection and mission. It is God’s mission to God’s people. Therefore, Jesus tells his disciples to ask the master of the harvest for more laborers. This is a sly instruction to his disciples. If they pray for laborers, it will slowly dawn on them that they are the laborers they are praying for.

This prayer of the disciples prepares them for Jesus’ next step: “Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave

Page 19: Give Us This Day 2012 Sample

Tuesday 117116 July 10

them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and illness” (Matt 10:1). The twelve be-come laborers and continue the work of Jesus. If they con-tinue the work of Jesus, it is presupposed they are impelled by the same compassion that drives Jesus. Their underlying concern is to lavish love and life on people who have never experienced it. Since this love and life is what the twelve have freely experienced from God in Jesus, they should freely pass it along to others. They are giving to others what they have already received.

The preparation for carrying out the work of the kingdom is to experience the kingdom in yourself.

Exalt the Lord our God;bow down before his footstool.Holy is he!

Among his priests were Aaron and Moses;among those who invoked his name was Samuel. They cried out to the Lord and he answered.

To them he spoke in the pillar of cloud. They obeyed his decrees and the statuteswhich he had given them.

O Lord our God, you answered them. For them you were a God who forgives, and yet you punished their offenses.

Scripture Galatians 6:7-10

Make no mistake: God is not mocked, for a person will reap only what he sows, because the one who sows for

his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows for the spirit will reap eternal life from the spirit. Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith.

And when through disobedience he had lost your friendship, you did not abandon him to the domain of death. For you came in mercy to the aid of all,so that those who seek might find you.Time and again you offered them covenantsand through the prophetstaught them to look forward to salvation. And you so loved the world, Father most holy, that in the fullness of timeyou sent your Only Begotten Son to be our Savior.Made incarnate by the Holy Spiritand born of the Virgin Mary,he shared our human naturein all things but sin.To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation,to prisoners, freedom, and to the sorrowful of heart, joy.To accomplish your plan,he gave himself up to death, and, rising from the dead,he destroyed death and restored life. And that we might live no longer for ourselvesbut for him who died and rose again for us,he sent the Holy Spirit from you, Father,as the first fruits for those who believe,so that, bringing to perfection his work in the world,he might sanctify creation to the full. Therefore, O Lord, we pray:may this same Holy Spiritgraciously sanctify these offerings, that they may becomethe Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ

for the celebration of this great mystery, which he himself left usas an eternal covenant. For when the hour had comefor him to be glorified by you, Father most holy, having loved his own who were in the world,he loved them to the end:and while they were at supper,he took bread, blessed and broke it,and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it,for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.In a similar way, taking the chalice filled with the fruit of the vine,he gave thanks, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it,for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Do this in memory of me.The mystery of faith.

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrectionuntil you come again. When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.

Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrectionyou have set us free.

Therefore, O Lord,as we now celebrate the memorial of our redemption,we remember Christ’s Deathand his descent to the realm of the dead,we proclaim his Resurrectionand his Ascension to your right hand, and, as we await his coming in glory,we offer you his Body and Blood, the sacrifice acceptable to youwhich brings salvation to the whole world.Look, O Lord, upon the Sacrificewhich you yourself have provided for your Church, and grant in your loving kindnessto all who partake of this one Bread and one Chalicethat, gathered into one body by the Holy Spirit, they may truly become a living sacrifice in Christto the praise of your glory. Therefore, Lord, remember nowall for whom we offer this sacrifice:especially your servant N. our Pope,N. our Bishop, and the whole Order of Bishops, all the clergy, those who take part in this offering, those gathered here before you, your entire people, and all who seek you with a sincere heart.

Remember alsothose who have died in the peace of your Christand all the dead, whose faith you alone have known. To all of us, your children, grant, O merciful Father, that we may enter into a heavenly inheritancewith the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,and with your Apostles and Saints in your kingdom. There, with the whole of creation, freed from the corruption of sin and death, may we glorify you through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.Through him, and with him, and in him,O God, almighty Father,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.Amen.The Lord’s Prayer, p. 360.

Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation IIPrefaceIt is truly right and justthat we should give you thanks and praise,O God, almighty Father, for all you do in this world, through our Lord Jesus Christ. For though the human raceis divided by dissension and discord,

yet we know that by testing usyou change our heartsto prepare them for reconciliation.Even more, by your Spirit you move human heartsthat enemies may speak to each other again, adversaries may join hands, and peoples seek to meet together.By the working of your power it comes about, O Lord, that hatred is overcome by love, revenge gives way to forgiveness, and discord is changed to mutual respect. Therefore, as we give you ceaseless thankswith the choirs of heaven,we cry out to your majesty on earth, and without end we acclaim:Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts . . .You, therefore, almighty Father,we bless through Jesus Christ your Son,who comes in your name.He himself is the Word that brings salvation, the hand you extend to sinners, the way by which your peace is offered to us.When we ourselves had turned away from youon account of our sins, you brought us back to be reconciled, O Lord,so that, converted at last to you,we might love one anotherthrough your Son,whom for our sake you handed over to death.

And now, celebrating the reconciliationChrist has brought us,we entreat you:sanctify these gifts by the outpouring of your Spirit, that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son,whose command we fulfill when we celebrate these

mysteries. For when about to give his life to set us free,as he reclined at supper,he himself took bread into his hands, and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it,for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.In a similar way, on that same evening,he took the chalice of blessing in his hands, confessing your mercy, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it,for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Do this in memory of me.The mystery of faith. We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrectionuntil you come again.

When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup,we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrectionyou have set us free.Celebrating, therefore, the memorialof the Death and Resurrection of your Son,who left us this pledge of his love,we offer you what you have bestowed on us,the Sacrifice of perfect reconciliation.Holy Father, we humbly beseech youto accept us also, together with your Son,and in this saving banquetgraciously to endow us with his very Spirit, who takes away everythingthat estranges us from one another.May he make your Church a sign of unityand an instrument of your peace among all peopleand may he keep us in communionwith N. our Pope and N. our Bishop and all the Bishopsand your entire people.Just as you have gathered us now

at the table of your Son,so also bring us together, with the glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of God,with your blessed Apostles and all the Saints, with our brothers and sistersand those of every race and tonguewho have died in your friendship.

Amazing GraceOrdinary Time—am/pm

1. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, / that saved and strengthened me! / I once was lost, but now am found, / was blind, but now I see.

2. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, / and grace my fears relieved; / how precious did that grace appear / the hour I first believed!

3. The Lord has promised good to me, / his word my hope secures; / he will my shield and portion be / as long as life endures.

4. Through many dangers, toils, and snares, / I have already come; / ’tis grace has brought me safe thus far, / and grace will lead me home.

5. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, / bright shining as the sun, / we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise / than when we’d first begun.

Guide to Lectio DivinaChoose a word or phrase of the Scriptures you wish to pray. It makes no difference which text is chosen, as long as you have no set goal of “covering” a certain amount of text. The amount of text covered is in God’s hands, not yours.

Read. Turn to the text and read it slowly, gently. Savor each portion of the reading, constantly listening for the “still, small voice” of a word or phrase that somehow says, “I am for you today.” Do not expect lightning or ecstasies. In lectio divina, God is teaching us to listen, to seek him in silence. God does not reach out and grab us but gently invites us ever more deeply into his presence.

Ponder. Take the word or phrase into yourself. Memorize it and slowly repeat it to yourself, allowing it to interact with your inner world of concerns, memories, and ideas. Do not be afraid of distractions. Memories or thoughts are simply parts of yourself that, when they rise up during lectio divina, are asking to be given to God along with the rest of your inner self. Allow this inner pondering, this rumination, to invite you into dialogue with God.

Pray. Whether you use words, ideas, or images—or all three—is not important. Interact with God as you would with one who you know loves and accepts you. Give to God what you have discovered during your experience of meditation. Give to God what you have found within your heart.

It is not necessary to assess the quality of your lectio divina, as if you were “performing” or seeking some goal. Lectio divina has no goal other than that of being in the presence of God by praying the Scriptures.

How to Use Give Us This Day®

Why a guide for using a daily prayer resource? Because daily prayer can seem daunting. Though I grew up saying prayers daily, daily prayer was a practice I came to well into my adult life. It was challenging at the start. Even if we’ve settled into the rhythm and practice of daily prayer, there is much to gain from the simplicity and substance of a resource such as Give Us This Day:

  •  Prayers for morning and evening include Scripture, inter-cessions, and other helpful prompts.

  •  “Blessed Among Us” features models of holy living who have gone before us and pray for us.

  •  Mass texts and reflections convey the depth and breadth of Scripture—and of God’s love for us in Christ.

You don’t need to attend daily Mass to pray with those texts. Nor do you need to pray with the daily content “in order.” You may wish to pray with all the content and not miss a word. You may be drawn to just a few words or particular features that give you pause. All or any of this is fine. Let the Holy Spirit be your daily guide—and be sure to explore the inspiring weekly and monthly pieces in each issue as well (see the user-friendly calendar and contents on pp. 2–4).

Whenever you pray—even if you don’t feel instant “results”— entrust your prayer to the Holy Spirit, who surely and certainly will lead you into communion with God and others.

May Give Us This Day help each of us to comfortably approach God in prayer, confident that God approaches us first and this day awaits our response.

Canticle of Mary (Magnificat) Luke 1:46-55

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:the Almighty has done great things for me,and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear himin every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israelfor he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers,to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
