When was the last time you left work at work? We’ve all been there. There is always one more thing to do: one more email to write, one more phone call to make, one more text to return. And it doesn’t help that our clients often need our services at odd times on an emergency basis. Our smartphones are always in our hands, notifications buzzing away. We just can’t seem to put work down.

But does all that activity make us better, more successful lawyers? I know it seems counter intuitive. Lawyering is a competitive profession. However, always sitting with your nose to the grindstone isn’t going to get you where you want to be. Why? Because your focus will be on doing work rather than on building relationships and a book of business that will allow you to chart your own path.

Successful lawyers find ways to push themselves professionally and personally so that they are able to make the most of their experience. Each year of experience has something new and different in it.

The key to success for lawyers is making the time to build relationships: inside their firms, outside their firms, with clients, and with anyone else who might be able to refer them business. They try new things, explore new areas of law, and keep themselves from burning out.
