ABOUT THE SHELTER • Shelter is a non –governmental,

charitable and non- profitable

organization.

• We provide Psychological andemotional support / Education /Rehabilitation and Reinsertion andEmpowerment

• The shelter caters up to 40 women

and children at a time.

• We work in close collaborationwith the following departments:

• Ministry of Gender Equality, ChildDevelopment and Family Welfare,National Development Unit,Domestic Violence unit, Police

Department and the MunicipalCouncil of Curepipe.

A woman and her 4 children victim ofGender based Violence were

referred to us by the Ministry of

Gender Equality. Here is her casestudy:

• NAME: CHRISTINE

• AGE: 23 YEARS

• DATE OF ADMISSION: 5 OCT 2010

• OCCUPATION: UNEMPLOYED

• OCCUPATION OF PARTNER:

MASON

• MARITAL STATUS: LIVING WITH A

PARTNER SINCE 7 YEARS

• NO. OF CHILDREN: 4 (1 year, 2

years, 3 years and 6 years)

NATURE OF PROBLEM:

• Christine was battered and

threatened by her alcoholicpartner.

• She was turned out of

conjugal roof with her children.• They were in danger and had

no place abode

• They were placed in our

• Life of the victim andher children have beentraumatized.

• Her violent partnercould have killed them.

• Support andempowerment needed.

• There are no acceptableexcuses. GBV is a crimeand it must be responded

to as such.

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING THI S PROBLEM? 

Psychological counseling andregular meetings done withChristine.

She wanted to be independentand free of violence.

Becoming economicallyindependent through snacksand pickle making.

Fresh vegetables and greenspices are available in ourvegetable garden planted by our

residents.

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE PROJECT? 

• The project time frame is anongoing one.

• Even after the departure of

Christine she can carry on withthis little business and earn a

living.

• She can send her children to

school and lead a normal life.

• Support to women to becomeindependent through

Corporate SocialResponsibility introduced in

year 2009 (companies giving

2% of their profits to an NGO

yearly).

• Victims of GBV need to

become part of the solution toend violence.

WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS INVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY 

INVOLVED ? • Residents above 16

years old and women are

the key target.

• Networking with severalpartners such as

Managers of

supermarkets, vegetables

sellers and well-wishers

including men andwomen.

• This project is a gendersensitive project that aims atpromoting responsibility andparticipation of men within the

community so as to enable theeffective empowerment ofwomen and the enhancementof the quality of life of victimsof GBV.

PARTNERSHIPS FORMED THROUGH THE PROJECT 

• Partners from differentsupermarkets/sellers for buyingher products.

• National Women EntrepreneurCouncil which operates under

the aegis of the Ministry ofGender Equality has beencontacted for guidance forChristine’s project.

• She got the opportunity to sell herproduct at the market place. Freestand offered by the Council.

• We made further arrangements forher marketing in other NGO’s and

hotels which promote women

empowerment.

RESOURCEFULNESS: WHAT FINANCIAL, HUMAN AND OTHER RESOURCES WERE 

MOBILISED? 

• Members of the staff,caregivers, board membersand well wishers wereinvolved in this project.

• Different donors, includingCSR fund helped

financially.

• The financial resources havebeen utilized in purchasingplastic bags, tags, jars,ingredients etc for the makingof snacks and pickles.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION 

Monitoring:

• Weekly evaluation and monitoringis being carried out by themembers of the staff about the

progress of this project.

• The project was done in anefficient way to manage allexpenses so that she obtainsmaximum revenues to raise herchildren.

Evaluation:

At the beginning she missed somesteps but gradually build up someskills and ideas to do the snacks

and pickles in less time.

All her products were sold out in ashort lapse of time.

Feedback from buyers:

Quality - good and tastyPackets and jars - neat and pleasant

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED? 

• Christine has been able to sell herproducts and is getting a decentincome which enable her to savefor her future.

• This project has boost up her selfesteem and uplift the quality of

her life and that of her children.

• Along side Christine is able togive quality time to her childrenthrough the creativity programs.

EFFECTIVENESS 

• Personal developmentand self confidence ofChristine and herchildren was noted byeach member of theteam.

Her communication

and negotiation skillswere also noted.

She showed goodmotherhood approach.

She applied the rules anddiscipline as a singleparent and to developsingle/parent relationship.

The good effective

leadership skills as anentrepreneur women.

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION 

• The Shelter has alwaysapplied the good practice

of sustainability for anysmall or big projects.

• This activity will be

maintained through Fund

Raising Activities, taping

sources, knock doors of

different companies tocarry on with the project.

• Financial help from theCorporate Social

Responsibilities andinternationally.

• In the case of Christine we rest

assure that she will continually

have our support.

• This project can be replicated

by any convinced woman who

wish to combat Gender BasedViolence and other NGO’s.

LESSONS LEARNED 

The project was fruitful. The intervention of good practicesand methodology was the key to success.

The most important lesson is:

“ Violence can be prevented in our own countries andaround the world we have shining examples of howviolence has been countered. Governments, NGO’s,

Communities and individuals can make a difference”• Nelson Mandela
