• John Lennon– All we are saying is GIVE PEACE A CHANCE

Definition of PEACE

• Peace can be a state of harmony or the absence of hostility.

• a non-violent way of life.

• cessation of violent conflict.

• a state of quiet or tranquility — an absence of disturbance or agitation.

• Peace can also describe a relationship between any people characterized by respect, justice, and goodwill.

• Peace can describe calm, serenity, and silence. This latter understanding of peace can also pertain to an individual's sense of himself or herself, as to be "at peace" with one's own mind.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

• Did you know …the PEACE sign turns 50 in April 2008!

Fifty years ago on a cold, grim Easter holiday, a protest was meant to be a watershed: a global call to ban the bomb. People marched from London to a factory in the countryside where Britain built its atomic bombs.

• Gerald Holtom was the artist and textile designer who created the PEACE sign.

A conscientious objector during World War II, he was driven to the nuclear disarmament campaign, he said, by a feeling of despair.

• I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards in the manner of Goya's peasant before the firing squad

– Gerald Holtom

• It's been used as a badge against tyranny in Greece,

• It's been used as a badge against apartheid in South Africa,

• it's been used just as a general peace logo, • it's been worn by U.S. U.S. troops opposing the

war in Vietnam, • it's become very much an anti-war symbol, but

also an anti-tyranny symbol.

TODAY…

• We still see the SYMBOL of the ultimate PEACE
