GIVAUDAN CATERS TO EMPLOYEES’ TASTES IN DEVICES WITH MOBILEIRON SOLUTIONS  Givaudan is the global leader in the fragrance and flavor industry, offering products to food, beverage, consumer goods, and fragrance companies around the world. Recognizing the need to let its employees work the way they want to work, Givaudan’s Mobile IT staff launched a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program and used MobileIron to secure the devices. Givaudan is also using MobileIron as the security foundation of a new a corporate-issued device program. With MobileIron in place, Givaudan employees can now use their own iOS and Android devices to connect to corporate email, contacts, and chat—and are generally satisfied with the platform. BYOD REQUIRES MDM Givaudan doesn’t just seek to excel at developing and marketing fragrances and flavors. The company’s culture of excellence includes its behind-the-scenes performers, too. When Givaudan’s CIO recently challenged his IT department to emulate the rest of the business by taking their contributions to a new level, the team responded by looking for ways to help mobile employees do their jobs more efficiently. Recognizing that today’s employees consume more technology than ever, Givaudan’s IT department wanted to let staff connect to the company network via their favorite mobile devices—not just corporate-issued BlackBerry devices. But with employees scattered across 45 countries, implementing a mobile device program was going to be a challenge. And Givaudan’s first attempt at a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program quickly tested the limits of the company’s infrastructure. “In terms of both scalability and security, our infrastructure wasn’t set up for a successful BYOD program,” recalls Damien Lachuer, Stream Lead, Infrastructure and Technology, Givaudan. “We were also limited to using iOS devices, but we knew some of our employees preferred the Android platform. All of this meant it was time to look for a reliable MDM platform.” INTERNAL APP STORE SETS MOBILEIRON APART In spring 2011, Givaudan began reading MDM industry reports from various analysts and contacted some trusted technology firms for recommendations. After compiling a list of potential MDM partners, Givaudan began to assess its options. “We noticed there were two philosophies among MDM vendors,” recalls Lachuer. “One was the sandbox approach, where sensitive information goes in an enclosed container on the device. The other approach involved integrating security features

with the rest of the system. We felt the integrated approach would more closely match the way our employees are used to working.” Based on analyst rankings as well as recommendations from its technology partner Nomasis, Givaudan included MobileIron in the list of five vendors it wanted to evaluate further. Givaudan then held workshops with technical representatives from each of the vendors on the list. During the evaluation process, Givaudan noted that MobileIron not only met all of its basic requirements, but also held some distinct advantages over the rest of the field. “Other solutions had a complex interface, but MobileIron’s was simple and minimized the need for training,” says Benedicte Comard, Email and Collaboration Services Manager, Givaudan. “And other vendors had pricing models that were difficult to understand, but MobileIron’s was simpler.” The biggest differentiator for Givaudan was MobileIron’s internal app store, Apps@Work. Although Givaudan didn’t plan on deploying business apps to employees immediately, the company knew the time would come soon. Another important factor was MobileIron’s close relationship with Nomasis. “We didn’t want to be alone with a relatively new product in a young market,” says Lachuer. “Nomasis’ extensive experience with MobileIron convinced us that we would have a successful implementation.” UNOBTRUSIVE MOBILE SECURITY LETS EMPLOYEES DO THEIR JOBS After a successful proof of concept and pilot phase, Givaudan went live on MobileIron. Today, about 800 Givaudan employees use MobileIron as they take advantage of the company’s BYOD program. “Our experience so far with MobileIron has been very positive,” says Comard. “All the people who used MobileIron from the start were happy about it. We feel confident using MobileIron to secure both iOS and Android devices, which means more employees can now work the way they want to work.” Thanks to their early success on MobileIron, Givaudan’s IT staff plans to offer corporate-issued iOS and Android devices in early 2013. For the first time, Givaudan will be able to provide tablet computers to employees who need them. Meanwhile, the company will be more responsive to employee requests for specific types of mobile devices. “We couldn’t have done what we’re doing without a reliable MDM platform,” says Lachuer. “The best part is that the solution is unobtrusive. Employees don’t mind installing the MobileIron application and using a PIN to secure their devices.”

MOBILE SECURITY SOLUTION EARNS 93 PERCENT SATISFACTION RATE Givaudan’s mobile employees use MobileIron to gain secure access to email, contacts, and chat functionality. Employees on iOS devices can also use a MobileIron-secured VPN to access the company’s intranet and document management system. By simply clicking a link in an email, they can open the VPN to access a document. Eager to measure the impact of its new services, Givaudan’s IT department conducted an employee satisfaction survey in August 2012. Givaudan received three times the responses it expected—and measured a high degree of satisfaction among Givaudan’s employees. “Frankly, we weren’t sure how our employees would feel about having seamless integration of their corporate services and private information on their mobile devices,” says Comard. With its employee-owned mobile devices secured and a corporate-issued device program in the works, Givaudan is now focusing on developing new mobile apps—as well as mobile extensions for existing business applications—to be used on the iPhone. The company plans to deploy the apps through MobileIron Apps@Work in early 2013. “The challenge for our IT department is to continually deliver greater value to our employees,” says Lachuer. “So far, MobileIron and Nomasis have always had answers to our questions and solutions to our challenges, so we’re convinced they’ll be the right partners to power our continued innovation.”
