 Refer to GP 06-31.

Two distinct types of cathodic protection systems exist these !ein"#

• Gal$anic %sacrificial& anode systems.

•  'mpressed current systems.

Gal$anic systems pro$ide cathodic protection current !y the preferential corrosion

of the anode alloy, which is more electrone"ati$e in the "al$anic series with respect

to the car!on-steel %(-steel& structure to !e protected %the cathode&. )nodes are

usually directly attached to the (-steel structure with an electrically continuous

mechanical connection, such as a !olt or weld.

 'mpressed current systems use inert, non-corrodin" anodes. )s the anodes are inert

and do not pro$ide their own protection current throu"h corrosion of the alloy, an

external d.c. power source is re*uired. )s anodes are not directly connected to the structure, external ca!lin" is re*uired to complete the electrical circuit !etween

anode, cathode and external power source.

,")" Ga$vanic -sacrificia$. systems

a. There are asicall three "ain o!tions that shall e considered for use in gal/anic cathodic

re8uired for onshore structures and et#een 0 A 30 ears for offshore structures.

a. %lu"iniu" anodes should e !ri"aril considered for a8ueous and offshore a!!lications.

 . %lu"iniu" anodes shall not e used for !otale #ater storage a!!lications due to the to5ic

nature of the corrosion !roducts.

c. %lu"iniu" anodes "a e considered for use in onshore uried and fresh#ater

a!!lications if #ater resisti/it does not e5ceed 10 K-" (33 K-ft) as !assi/ation is li7el

to occur eond this /alue.

,")"*" /a0nesium

a. ,agnesiu" anodes should !redo"inatel e considered for uried onshore a!!lications

and also for non-saline a8ueous a!!lications in #hich resisti/it is et#een A 10 K-"

(16 A ;:0 K-ft).

a!!lications if conditions are suitale su2ect to their li"itations.

 . Jinc anodes should not e used if #ater resisti/it e5ceeds 30 K-" (100 K-ft) and shall

not e used in en/iron"ents in #hich o!erating te"!erature #ill e5ceed 0L& (1L9).

a. ,, anodes should e chosen as the are technicall su!erior and chea!er to install than

the other co""onl used i"!ressed current anodes in "ost a!!lications.

 ++ anodes are predominately used in onshore applications, in !oth a*ueous and

!uried en$ironments howe$er, ++ anodes are commonly found on ship/scathodic protection systems.

 ++ anodes ha$e pro$en performance with o$er twenty years experience

operatin" at $ery hi"h current densities and in extreme conditions.

 'n comparison with silicon iron, ++ anodes are#

•  i"hter %a typical )mps ++ anode wei"hs less than 1 2" %, l!& compared

with up to 0 2" %110 l!& for an e*ui$alent solid silicon iron anode&.

• (heaper and easier to transport and install %due to wei"ht sa$in"&.

•  4ot prone to lon" term ca!le !rea2a"e %due to lower wei"ht&.

•  4ot easily !ro2en %5ilicon iron anodes are !rittle and prone to !rea2a"e&.•  4ot prone to end effect7 wasta"e.

These fi"ures must !e ta2en into account when calculatin" minimum anode massre*uired for the proect assi"ned desi"n life, particularly with respect to silicon iron

anodes. 't is howe$er common practice to include an additional contin"ency of ;

to o$erall current demand o$er the minimum theoretical $alue.

 . ,, anodes shall not e used in en/iron"ents containing the halides of ro"ine

fluorine or iodine as these are detri"ental to the o!eration of the anode and "a lead to

 !re"ature failure.

,"*"*" Si$icon iron 'ith chrome addition

Silicon iron anodes should e considered as a secondar alternati/e choice to ,, ut

li"itations to the !oints raised ao/e.

5ilicon iron anodes ha$e !een the traditional choice since the inception of the

impressed current system in the 1<:0s.

,"*"+" A$ternatives to //O and si$icon iron anodes

Guidance should e sought fro" EPTG #hene/er !ro2ectsCo!erations consider utilising these

anodes.

ther impressed current anode types such as "raphite, ma"netite, and platinised

titanium may also !e encountered, !ut are rarely used. ++ and silicon iron

anodes are most common to the industry and ha$e a more di$erse application ran"e.

 Platinised titanium is !asically used for a*ueous applications.

 +a"netite and "raphite anodes are used for !uried onshore applications only, and

 suffer many of the disad$anta"es of silicon iron due to their similar !rittle nature.

3" Initia$ mar4et revie'
