How it all started/ What Happened:

• Savonarola attacked the Medici for having ideas that he believed were the reason for the downfall of Florence.• Many people took Savonarola’s side.• The Medici ended up having to give over the rule of Florence.• Now the supporters were in charge and Savonarola thought it would

be best if they kept a close look on their now extremely strict city.

People that were involved

• The Medici had a huge impact on what went on with Savonarola.• He disagreed with their main thoughts, which was supporting the

renaissance. • The people of Florence also had a big part in this.• They obviously supported Savonarola when it came to overpowering

the Medici which is why he was able to have that happen .

New Rules and Their Effects/After it Happened: • Many things were banned such as

• Gambling• Swearing• horse racing

• The people did not appreciate how strict Savonarola was.• Savonarola was later hung for heresy, and this put the Medici back as

the ruling family.

Bonfire of Vanities

• In the bonfire of vanities people would burn things like:• Books• Paintings (especially those with nudity)• Fancy clothes • Musical instruments• Things that were banned (playing cards)

• Many of the things they had to burn were things created or welcomed after the Renaissance • Savonarola made them burn their luxury because he thought doing

this would “save them from sin”

How this shows Religious Disunity

• The people of Florence completely turned on the people who ruled them, without thinking. • Little did they know that Savonarola was a complete control freak and

extremely strict.• Savonarola also made them burn basically everything they own during

the Bonfire of Vanities.• They now have no set ruler and their city is sure to suffer.
