It’s a fun sequel that’s good enough to stand next to the initial film, the surprise 2012 hit, which introduced us all to the world of a capella talent contests. The original cast is at it again albeit some with much smaller roles. Anna Kendrick as Beca was absolute- ly wonderful in the original movie and she’s charming in this one. It just feels a little watered down and not as inspired. The plot takes Beca in another direction as she pursues an internship with a music label. While the decision keeps the nar- rative relevant, it also takes Beca away from the group and minimizes the hilarious exchanges her character had with the other members of the Bellas throughout the first movie. It’s a relatively small issue against an otherwise pleasant and really funny sequel. The film opens with the Bellas performing for President and Mrs. Obama at Lincoln Center, the loca- tion of a total of three champi- onships beginning with the first movie. Things are going pretty good until Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) is lowered from the ceiling on silks and becomes entangled. To make a long story short, she ends up tearing her pants and expos- ing herself to their illustrious guests. The performance draws criticism, and the Bellas end up getting kicked out of the competition circuit. Beca and Chloe (Brittany Snow) appeal to competition organizers and commentators John and Gail (John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks). They agree to exonerate the Bellas if they can win an internation- al a capella competition. The prob- lem is that no American team has ever won. Banks directs Pitch Perfect 2 with a script from Kay Cannon, who was responsible for the original movie. In her directorial debut, Banks does a good job of keeping the story mov- ing at a solid pace with numerous funny gags along the way. Some of the funniest one-liners come from Higgins and Banks, whose brief interludes during compe- tition provide some of the most memorable moments of the movie. There are hilarious scenes involving Beca and a music producer played by Keegan-Michael Key, and Wilson yet again proves to be a scene stealer. Fat Amy is given a bigger charac- ter arc this time, including a budding romance with Bumper, played by Adam DeVine. The subplot gives viewers a handful of scenes that are really well done, including an amus- ing sing-off of Pat Benatar’s “We Belong” as the two characters confess their mutual affections. Newcomer Hailee Steinfield is a welcome addition as the Bella legacy trying to convince the group that they should inject more original music into their performance instead of just covers. Pitch Perfect 2 features even bet- ter music than the original with greater variety. The musical numbers are excellent, particularly “Flashlight,” which will make you want to sing right along. It’s not a flawless movie. In fact, the film hits many of the same notes as the original. Fortunately, the cast is so charismatic and fun that you won’t bother to notice. It’s as stylish and energetic as the first movie and well worth a date-night viewing.
