Giorgio and CDF
Celebrating 70 years of Giorgio and >25 years of CDF
Henry Frisch Univ. of Chicago
A Personal Note:I first met Giorgio at the 1974 London Conf- we had just found ‘direct muons’ (charm):
He came to the session in tennis whites + rackets, with charm and enthusiasm.
“The lack of Pt ‘bumps’ means that there are no significant heavy objects (M from 3 to 10 GeV) that decay into 2 leptons”-Leon
Intro: Giorgio’s Physics Interests:
See Fermi’s Yale Lectures of 1951“Electromagnetic and
Yukawa InteractionConstants:”
“Perhaps future developments..will enable us to understand the reasons for the existence and the strength of the various interactions.”- Fermi
The Start of CDF• Jan 1997- Cronin heads Colliding Beam
Dept.- -• 2 Init. Designs: one magnetic, one not• Wilson decrees 10M$ cap on detector cost (!)• Oct. 78- Wilson resigns- Lederman new Dir.• Oct. 79- CDF Dept formed; Alvin Head of CDF• Giorgio had already approached Alvin – Pisa
is one of the founding institutions at formal start.

Many Generations of Excellent Young Students (preLHC-school)
Support for non-US physicists (Russians,others,…)
CDF presence at Conferences- La Thuile, PbarP, Elba,...
General Level of Culture- (next slide)
