We respect multiple cultural ways of knowing, seeing and living, celebrate the benefits of diversity and have an ability to understand and honour differences. We view culture and the context of family as central to children’s sense of being and belonging, and to success in lifelong learning. Cultural competence is much more than awareness of cultural differences. It is the ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures.

Developing positive attitudes towards cultural differences

“It is very similar to Christmas, only it goes for eight nights and we get presents every night.”- Adam

Adam read the story, Elmo’s Little Dreidel. In the story it talks about playing a game called Dreidel. The Dreidel looks like a spinning top. The children use the Dreidel during the eight day of Hanukkah to play a fun game. If the Dreidel lands on the GIMEL you get all the chocolate gold coins. Thank you Adam and Jake for sharing with us your family’s celebration of Hanukkah and the chocolate gold coins.

Ella’s tree Ava’s tree

Tree by Will S Tree by Levi

I was climbing up and one time I climbed up by myself. I could see everyone from up in the tree. It made me feel happy because I couldn’t believe it. Will SI remember climbing it and jumping from it. It was hard when I first came in to the tree. I practised then I got better. LeviI remember when I first got in the tree with Minnie and Everly. Minnie helped me get up by pushing me. I was happy. The tree is near the oval. AvaI can’t climb that one, but the other one across the oval I can climb. There are little things that you climb up. WilliamIt’s really tall. It’s like a big hand. When I first got up there it was kind of big. The trees are not all the same. The one in the Prep playground, you can’t climb. It is a big tree. The tree across from the paper trees, that one is easier to climb. It is really small because it is shorter. Xander

We invited the children to reflect on their experiences with the trees. Over time, the children have learned

that each tree offers different challenges and possibilities, as Xander

explained, “The trees are not the same.”
