Dear Parents/Caregivers
Welcome back to term 3 as the westerly winds tell us that it must almost
be EKKA time and tailor are on the bite! I hope you managed to have
some quality family time throughout the holidays as we push through to
the end of week two already!
Junior Sports Field
A big thankyou to our P&C for supporting the school financially
to develop our new junior sports field. This area is now used every
day at playtimes, physical education lessons and intra-school
sport rotations. The Student Representative Council (SRC)
recently held a sausage sizzle which supported the purchase of
post pads for the refurbished play area to ensure our students
stay safe whilst being active.
What is your child learning this term?
It is very powerful from a learning point of view, when your child knows that you as a parent
know what they are learning at school. Parents have the opportunity to consolidate student
learning in subject areas by simply asking a few questions. Term Placemats were emailed to
parents this week and are available on our website. Have a quick look at just what is being
taught in classrooms this term.
COVID Restrictions
As a school, we have limited the number of meetings and school activities where social
distancing is difficult. Whole school parades have ceased and only P-2 and 3-6 parades
continue at the moment. Staff are wearing masks in high traffic areas where social distancing
is difficult such as the staffroom during breaks and meetings that require face to face
organisation. Staff do not have to wear a mask whilst teaching, but may elect to do so.
I’d like to thank all parents for social distancing, wearing a mask and scanning in with the QR
code when entering the school.
As a school, we are making a deliberate effort to continue with most school activities when
we can. We want parents onsite supporting school events where possible. Our up and
coming Athletics Carnival days are a good example of this.
Two Minute Zones- new paint lines
You may have noticed that new paint lines and sign posts have been put in out the front of
the school during the break? Traffic, though still congested at times, is moving better as all
parents follow the simple rules of driving to the front of the lanes, not getting out of your car
and parking on the other side of the road when possible. These simple actions go a long way
to promoting the safety of all school community members at Gilston. Thankyou.

Prep 2022
This week, Prep interviews for 2022 have commenced. It was wonderful to meet so many new families
and welcome them to the Gilston community. If you have a child commencing Prep in 2022 and are still
to book a Prep Interview, please contact the office.
Age Appropriate Pedagogies
Age-appropriate pedagogies are shaping teaching and learning in the early years of school now and
into the future.
Age-appropriate pedagogies support early years teachers to apply a range and balance of teaching
approaches and characteristics of quality teaching in their classroom practice. Teachers are supported
to align curriculum, age-appropriate pedagogies and assessment to maximise children's engagement in
learning and to enhance outcomes.
Children learn best when they are actively engaged in purposeful learning experiences. The Australian
Curriculum clearly defines what is to be taught, and teachers use their knowledge of children's interests,
strengths and capabilities to identify the most effective way to teach curriculum content.
Prep teachers at Gilston have been working towards embedding age-appropriate pedagogies in their
classrooms. They have identified students’ interests and are embedding the characteristics of
Age-appropriate pedagogies into learning opportunities.
Deputy Chat… Upper Primary Deputy (3-6) Kylie Gibson
Welcome back-
Welcome back to all families to Semester 2. It is crazy that we are already half way through the year. I
hope all families had an enjoyable and restful break.
ICAS
We are delighted to inform you that Gilston State School will be participating in the world-renowned
ICAS Assessments this year. ICAS is developed by ICAS assessments, a wholly owned subsidiary of UNSW
Sydney, with over 35 years’ experience in educational assessments.
ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English,
Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling and Digital Technologies.
Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Every
student will receive a printed certificate and an online result report. Top performers will be eligible for
medals and are invited to attend special award ceremonies to have their academic excellence
publicly recognised.
The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the
personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. Your child will be presented with
high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for
prior study or revision.
ICAS Assessments are now online, a move that reflects a sector-wide transition to computer-based
assessments. This allows greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results.

Parent Placemats T3
Term 3 Parent Placemats were emailed recently. If you require a hardcopy, please contact your child’s
teacher. These can also be found on our school website. Please take the time to read through what
your child will be learning about this term and take note of the important dates and events to add to
your calendar.
A new term generally means a new focus! For some students it may mean
continuing on with their English, Maths or Social goals, for others there will be a
new goal in these areas. Please check in with your child to discuss what they are
aiming for this term. The Teacher’s role is to guide and support students in
attaining their goal by providing feedback and scaffolding through the teaching
sequence. In week 8, Three-way conferencing will take place and provide you
with an opportunity to discuss how your child has progressed over the term. In the
meantime, talk with your child about their learning and if needed reach out to
your child’s teacher regarding any concerns.
In the Classrooms this week!
It was great to see several classes taking their learning outdoors this week to enjoy the sunshine. As I
walked around the school there were groups of students engaged in various learning spaces working
collaboratively.
1W spent time investigating measurement with a focus on length. Year 3 explored place value in maths
with the use of their iPads they analysed number plates of staff cars to sort numbers.
Mr Stavar continued with Discus and Shot put instruction with the Athletics Carnival not far away. There
were also some senior students in Languages working on their presentations recording on iPads. Check
out some of the photos below.

National Disability Insurance Scheme The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports eligible people with disability to access
reasonable and necessary supports for daily living and to achieve their personal goals.
Who Manages The NDIS? The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) manages the NDIS. It is responsible for de-
ciding who is eligible for the NDIS and approving funding for their NDIS plan.
How is school affected by NDIS? The NDIS does not fund supports and services that are the responsibility of the education system.
Who does the NDIS Support?
• The NDIS provides a range of supports for people with disability related to daily living and to
achieving their personal goals.
• Early Years—Children aged 0–6 years with disability or developmental delay may be eligible
for NDIS Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) supports. Early Childhood partners co-ordinate
these supports and can support children and their families to build skills for daily living.
• Children aged 7 years and older with permanent disability may be able to access NDIS
supports to help them achieve their goals. Supports may include assistance with daily living, therapy
to help them improve or maintain their skills and function, assistance to improve social and
community participation, or funding for assistive technologies such as communication or mobility
equipment.
How do I find out if my child qualifies for NDIS and further Information?

Languages—Japanese... Kylie Doonican
This week our Year five students have been revising their hiragana characters using wool to create
words from our new unit of work. Keeping stroke order in mind, students shaped the wool to form
each character and then recorded their creations on Seesaw. We have continued to use Seesaw in
Japanese lessons to give all students the opportunity to hone their digital skills but it also allows
students to access their work from home to revise and study. We are using Quizlet to create study
sets of the vocabulary students are learning in each unit too. Both apps are downloadable for free or
can be used through their websites on computers or older /full devices.

Over the holidays the mini oval had a makeover!! The oval was a dust bowl with rocks
coming through the dirt making it unsafe for the kids to play on. It is now a green oasis
and is getting plenty of use.....the kids just love it! The School and the P&C contributed
equally to the project and it is a great example of where the P&C use your fundraising
money. Check out the before and after photos on our Facebook page
