london 10 11This is proving a difficult year to sell contemporaryjewellery. The number of galleries that have closeddown over the last twelve months is the largest wecan remember. Subsidised galleries, such as those allover Wales, are particularly under threat, as subsidiesare reduced or totally withdrawn. Though some haveturned to the internet and cut out the retailer, themain problem has been the recession. Dazzle hasimproved its facility by setting up recently a verysuccessful selling web site www.lovedazzle.com whichnow has between 800 and 1,000 pieces available topurchase 24 hours a day. Very much like a Dazzleexhibition, but online. However, the attraction ofonline purchasing is nowhere near the experience ofseeing and touching the actual pieces and thereforemost people thankfully prefer to buy direct at theexhibitions themselves. It does offer though, anopportunity for the many foreign buyers we have, tobuy from Dazzle when they return home and this is amarket we see expanding fast. Another recent butvery pleasant phenomenon is the increase in thenumber of Dazzle designers who hail from Asia. Thisis directly a result of the increase in talented foreignstudents who now come to UK colleges to study.Though, this is also a result of the need for collegesover here, to increase income by attracting wealthyclients who can afford the high fees. Often, to theexclusion of home grown students. However, onbalance, this is a good thing and most of the, particularly SE Asian designers, have added a lot tothe standard of work coming through with theirunique vision and use of unusual materials.

This is the 123rd DAZZLE at all venues. London NT,is our flagship exhibition – the first was in 1981 – andwe are proud to welcome back year on year the sameloyal customers and to greet those of you who havefound us for the very first time. The selection againthis year, relies heavily on younger designers, especially from Edinburgh College of Art. Selectionactually gets harder every year as the numbers ofgraduates increase and the overall standard decreases, with colleges continuing to battening down thehatches and facing increasingly stringent financialrestrictions. Most sales made at Dazzle are a hugesupport to younger makers in particular, andcontribute directly by under-pinning their constantstruggle for survival. We aim, as usual, to make theexhibition itself look different and indeed better thanprevious exhibitions, but we also have a responsibilityto give past exhibitors a run at the event. Itcontinues to be a real balancing act but means thatsome of your old favourites may have been rested.Conversely, it means that if you don’t buy thatsomething special, it may not be there again nextyear! Having the new selling website

www.lovedazzle.com where you can buy all year and24 hours a day, will mitigate against this ongoingproblem as it should provide lots of fresh work andnew faces plus some of the pieces seen and notpurchased from this exhibition. We repeat ourexhibition of three excellent printmakers but thistime, they are based not in Scotland, in South EastEngland. The prints are less specifically theatrical infeel and this year have a strong sense of landscapeand architecture. They are all in very small editionsand are available to buy and take away – in mostinstances – either framed or unframed. A selection ofthem are also available to buy directly on the website.Since we began almost 30 years ago, over 1,800exhibitors have shown with us in all exhibitions, selling directly or indirectly many tens of thousandsof pieces. Your patronage means that we can continueto be an excellent low-cost shop window for the mostexciting new work. The DAZZLE website(www.dazzle-exhibitions. com) has always been aheavily-followed one, with over 400,000 visits lastyear and well over one and a half million since itsinauguration. Many colleges throughout the worldnow routinely point their students to our website, with hundreds of full colour images and biographiesplus other information about past and presentexhibitions. The DAZZLE mailing list in the UK ishuge, with many tens of thousands. We mail out over40,000 preview invitations and exhibitionnotifications each year.

Exhibitions current or coming up soon: Manchester Town Hall, Albert Square. From 21November to January 2, 2011. Enquiries, telephone0161 234 1733. Glasgow Merchant Square, April 2011 (provisional). Edinburgh Traverse Theatre as part of the FestivalFringe. August 2011.

DAZZLE post-exhibition sales, by mail, fax, email ortelephone order, continue to be a major contributionto DAZZLE turnover, so please, if you are interestedin purchasing at a later date, take a sales form awaywith you. Make a note of the code number and price.of any piece you fancy – maybe for a Christmaspresent. We are just a telephone call away! The aimof DAZZLE, as always, is to show that qualityhandmade well-designed work, by top makers from allover the world, can still be accessible and affordable. If you would like to be added to the DAZZLE mailinglist to receive invitations in your area, please just askat the DAZZLE DESK.

Jackie FieldJackie Field is an exciting young printmakerbased in Brighton. She specialises in uniquewoodcuts and relief prints. Her recent work couldbe categorised as topographical, featuring theGlass Houses at Kew Gardens, the Eden ProjectBiomes and other glass houses throughout theworld.

Pamela HarePamela Hare is an artist and printmaker living inIslington. Her recent work is inspired by theurban landscape, not only in the City and Londonbut also in Venice and Marrakesh, capturingmoments and images in the man madeenvironment. She hand colours much of herwork, so that even within an edition, the imagecan vary enormously.

Davida SmithThe third printmaker, Davida Smith is an etcherliving and working in Rye, East Sussex and it isthis landscape and environment that is herprimary inspiration. She is a printmaker we havelong followed, going back to the eighties and it isinteresting how her work has evolved steadilyover the years.

Following the success of our Scottish printmakers last year, we have invited three printmakers basedin the South East who we think will provide an interesting and varied exhibition.
