COMMANDER GILBERT LORENZO, AP A PUBLICATION OF THE VERMILION SAIL & POWER SQUADRON September 2021 Americas Boating Club® is a registered trademark of the United States Power Squadrons ® Dear members of the Vermilion Sail and Power Squadron. Hello, everyone Yes! Summer is almost over; we need to prepare for our Boat storage, and we have only a few weeks left to use our Water Horse! I believe that this year season was worse than last year because we couldnt prepare for unexpected conditions because of the pandemic. I am so glad that, so far, we have to my knowledge not lost any member due to Covid. Well, it is time to prepare for Fall, Meetings, Xmas, Winter! I can believe it. After 17 months of waiting time, I finally could cross the Canadian Border and see my Kids and Grandkids. What a Joy! The new Bridge is in place. We had our first bridge meeting last week and it was a pleasure to see most everybody attending. I still have to learn a lot about Commander duties but with good help I should be ok for the year. I would like, in the name of the Vermilion Sail and Power Squadron, to thank Commander Kerry for his two years of service to our Squadron. Our first general meeting is soon in September, and I hope to see you all at our proud Vermilion Squadron meeting. LT Commander Gilbert Lorenzo AP

It’s so hard to believe another summer has come and gone. The Kayakathon in June, at Beaver Park, was so much fun. Thanks to Maryanne Kastl, and Jackie Covert (and all who helped) for all your hard work to make this a successful event. We even had vessel safety checks done on our kayaks. Thank you to Dave Kastl, and Ralph Schaefer for this. Our monthly meetings have started back up. The meetings are the third Thursday of each month. The back page of the newsletters has all the information for the upcoming meeting. Jean Verlotti, P

SEO REPORT

Now that summer is almost over and we swing back to our monthly meetings I hope everyone had a great boating season. With that said, Vermilion Sail and Power Squadron is planning on having in person classes this fall all dependent on the chance that we will be able to secure classroom space. I am planning on doing a Saturday ABC class for three weeks, 4 hours from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM, starting in October. Also, I will plan on a 5 week class with the sixth week as the exam night. As of this report class space has not been retained. If any member would like to take one of our inhouse classes, let me know what you would like to take. You can call me at 440-282-2282 and let me know what you are interested in taking. We have many good courses and it’s a good way to pass the fall and winter months.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT With the new start to monthly meetings, I hope that you have renewed your dues. You should have received a notice in the mail or email about members who's dues were due in June. All newer members' dues are due when you first joined Vermilion Sail and Power Squadron. You will get a notice when the dues are to be paid. Dues are to be paid directly to National. Please renew your dues when you receive them, we enjoy your company in Vermilion Sail and Power squadron, and hope that you take advantage of all the benefits that the Power Squadron has to offer.

MEMBERSHIP INVOLVEMENT REPORT

Welcome back to monthly meetings now that our summer boating season is beginning to ebb. Our monthly meetings will be listed in the Newsletter with where , what and what the program will be. USPS Fall Governing Board meeting will be in Raleigh, NC, starting the first week of September. My plans are to attend this meeting and get all the latest information on what is happening in USPS. From October 8 thru 10, there will be a Penta Conference in Kalahari Resort with D7, D9, D11, D24, D29. There will be four park passes with your room reservations, but you must make them by September 8th, 2021. This should be a great Conference and a way to meet other boaters from different Districts. Plan on attending for a wonderful time at the meetings, and activities that are planned for the weekend. And your children or grandchildren can enjoy the water park.

FROM THE DESK OF YOUR TREASURER SECRETARY

Welcome to the fall of 2021, with the new surge of Covid 19 upon us. We did enjoy a good part of the summer, but Barb and I are back to masking up at indoor areas. Let’s hope we all can start to have a normal meeting place with limited mask requirements. Just a reminder that the D-7 Fall Conference is at Kalahari Resort in Sandusky. There will be several districts participating in this, so plan on attending so we can learn how outside squadrons are doing in this Pandemic Year. Perhaps other squadrons are getting more members; so how do they do that? What king of Boating classes are held and what is the success rate for new members? The date to reserve a room is September 3rd. so don’t wait too long. The dates for the conference are October 8-10th. On the home front, Barb had hand surgery August 11th to repair torn tendons in two fingers on the right hand. Try to learn to drive a car left-handed. What we take for granted becomes a major task when hurting P/C Ralph Schaefer S.N.
