This issue of Messiah Lifeways magazine comes to you, our valued readers and friends, with grateful hearts and ambitious plans to continue fulfilling our Christian mission. The past year has been a flurry of activity as Project Envision counted down to completion! The new Greenwood and Engle nursing neighborhoods are open and thriving. Village Square is home to some of its first new residents, and Hopewell is gearing up to welcome its new residents soon. In the broader Messiah Lifeways family, we have much to share. This issue relates positive stories about Mount Joy Country Homes, news on our January 27, 2018 Grand Opening event, and highlights the outstanding care offered by our two Adult Day programs in Carlisle and Mechanicsburg. As you browse the photos and text in this last magazine of 2017, I trust you will sense that we are indeed thankful for how God has continued to use our ministry to serve older adults. On behalf of everyone at Messiah Lifeways, I wish you and yours a season full of gratitude and joy. We hope to see you on campus or in one of our community settings soon!

Sincerely,

Curt Stutzman, President & CEO

Adult Day Services: Enriching Lives and Supporting CaregiversCaring for an aging parent or ailing spouse while trying to fulfill the promise of helping them age in place can be a struggle. This is especially true for a growing segment of caregivers who have a parent or spouse they’re caring for, while simultaneously still raising kids or even grandkids. Known as the “sandwich generation,” many of them are also still working, and therefore their plates are quite full, as you might imagine.

Often as the caregiver goes to work or needs to run errands, their loved one may be alone throughout the day. The fear of falling, dementia, isolation, and boredom can create an unsafe or a less than desirable home life. Hiring care to look after them during the day is an option, but it can be cost prohibitive at times or it may not provide the stimulation they need or desire. Likewise, avoiding a move to a care community is counter to their goal. This is where Adult Day Services could be the solution.

Adult Day provides great balance Adult Day programs offer a great balance by enriching and caring for those trying to age in place, while supporting and relieving caregivers juggling their busy lives. Adult Day clients get the care, stimulation, and support they need on a daily basis, but at the end of the day they return home with their family or spouse. This takes a lot of pressure off of the spouse or the adult children as they go about the rest of their busy day. It is also reassuring for them to know that they are being cared for, eating well, having their medications administered, plus are participating in activities and are socializing with their peers.

Affordable and flexibleIt is also extremely affordable compared to other forms of daily care, and with financial assistance, typically through county funding, it is accessible to most everyone. Another great aspect is its flexibility. The Adult Day programs in Mechanicsburg and Carlisle are open Monday through Friday, but clients can attend as little as 1 or 2 days a week for 4 or 8 hours. They also open at 7:15 am and close around 5:00 pm to allow for early and late pick up.

The chart on the next page provides a great overview of the program, why it might be the right fit for you, plus more details on the services, support, and enrichment available to those in the program.

For more information call 717.790.8224 for the Mechanicsburg Center or 717.243.0447 for Carlisle.

Lifeways Coaching: Counseling and Connecting Those in NeedWhen the Messiah Lifeways Coaching program began in early 2012, its vision and purpose were pretty well mapped out. The basic concept was to provide guidance to older adults and their loved ones to help them navigate and understand all that Messiah Lifeways had to offer. Even more so, it was meant to help individuals recognize that we were much more than just a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). We also wanted to shed light

on our community support services and enrichment opportunities, and that we embraced the idea that there are many ways to live life as an older adult, such as aging in place or finding enrichment and purpose later in life.

Nearing 2018, we are so pleased with how far the program has come. Coaching has evolved and grown a lot. Not only can it provide guidance to all things Messiah Lifeways, but it has also been a great resource to connect people to services and resources beyond the Messiah Lifeways brand. Lifeways Coach Matthew Gallardo states, “It’s wonderful that we can help older adults and their families gain a better understanding and access the services and resources available to them, where to find them, the costs and if financial assistance is available. Plus, helping them narrow their search for care is very helpful and makes planning much more

Lifeways Coach Matthew Gallardo

5

Lifeways Coaching: Counseling and Connecting Those in Needefficient.” Gallardo added, “It’s nice to alleviate panic, provide encouragement and foster better planning.” Some examples include:

• Counseling families through caregiving challenges and/or care placement

• Connecting individuals to low cost or subsidized housing options or community based services

• Identifying and connecting individuals to financial assistance resources and programs

• Helping individuals find alternative placement when Messiah Village is not an option

• Helping individuals proactively plan for future care needs

• Serve as a sounding board for care plans, and to help mitigate and mediate difficult choices related to long-term care planning

• Offering the Retirement Options Coaching program, this helps retirees or those about to retire plan for a more meaningful, well planned and abundant retirement.

Coaching fills a much needed niche, helping to answer and provide solutions to certain challenges that come calling later in life. It offers a free helpline, one-on-one or family counseling, workshops, speaking engagements, and features a blog and most recently, the Coach’s Corner Podcast on iTunes, Google Play and SoundCloud. The podcast explores a variety of age-related topics and is a great way to learn more about services and trends in senior living.

Most Coaching clients are community members, although some residents attend some of the quarterly workshops and use the helpline. Lastly, most Coaching services are free and have no obligation.

Residents at Mount Joy Country Homes enjoy simply good living and making a difference in their community. Throughout the year, residents collect toys and other items for Operation Christmas Child, a popular Samaritan’s Purse initiative. Each November, residents gather together and pack as many as 70 shoeboxes for kids in need.

Resident Beverly Emenheiser, pictured on the magazine cover, has been a faithful Lancaster County volunteer for almost 30 years. She gives her time on behalf of Operation Christmas Child, Dress a Girl around the World, Elizabethtown Community Cupboard, and Project Linus, a charity that provides blankets for children in hospitals, shelters, or social service agencies. “Sewing blankets for kids who are ill or less fortunate really makes you feel like you’re doing something good that the kids will enjoy,” Bev said. Since 2000, she has made about 1,350 blankets for Project Linus.

A Community of VolunteeringPictured below are some of Bev’s volunteering companions, her fellow Mount Joy County Homes neighbors Sandy Achenbach and June Lancaster. Sandy and June participate in Operation Christmas Child and other efforts. Sandy, a former missionary, spent fourteen years in Nigeria teaching English at a secondary school. She said that once you see the need in other countries and how little others have, it’s hard not to give back and volunteer. “It gives me a chance to be the hands of Jesus here on earth,” Sandy said humbly. She also volunteers at GAiN USA, an international relief agency taking help and hope to some of the toughest places in the world.

Experience the joy of giving back by finding volunteer opportunities this season. Get connected with Operation Christmas Child at SamaritansPurse.org or visit VolunteerMatch.org to find local options.
