DESCRIPTION: The fan cowl doors have sandwich construction of carbon fiber composite, an aluminum honeycomb core and a layer of copper mesh. The doors are latched together along the bottom center line by four adjustable tension hook latches. If the fan cowl doors are pulled open by using front or aft latches, it leads to alignment pin of the fan cowl door getting stuck in alignment fittings on air intake cowl. This induces a bending stress on the fan cowl door. This stress will potentially lead to delamination of the area around the alignment pin on the fan cowl door (Refer Appendix I for the photographs of the affected areas). Therefore, it is recommended that the fan cowl doors should be pulled open by using the center latches to avoid any bending or rotational load on the fan cowl doors. G.L.Gupta Dy. G.M Engg. Form No. IGO/E&M/GIC/No.31/ISSUE 01

Subject: Opening Of Fan Cowl Doors GIC No. 03 of 2012

Date : 30/05/12 Status : Informatory Effective : Forthwith Purpose : To highlight the correct procedure for opening the fan cowl doors.

    DESCRIPTION:

The fan cowl doors have sandwich construction of carbon fiber composite, an aluminum honeycomb core and a layer

of copper mesh. The doors are latched together along the bottom center line by four adjustable tension hook latches.

If the fan cowl doors are pulled open by using front or aft latches, it leads to alignment pin of the fan cowl door

getting stuck in alignment fittings on air intake cowl. This induces a bending stress on the fan cowl door. This stress

will potentially lead to delamination of the area around the alignment pin on the fan cowl door (Refer Appendix I for

the photographs of the affected areas).

Therefore, it is recommended that the fan cowl doors should be pulled open by using the center latches to avoid any

bending or rotational load on the fan cowl doors.
