Shelter Building Challenge
Learn how to protect yourself from the
elements while competing in teams to
build the best waterproof shelter in the
class.
Fire Making
Experience the traditional ways to light a
fire and celebrate success by whittling a
stick for marshmallow toasting.
Survival Skills
Main curriculum links:
Physical Education: Take
part in outdoor activities
presenting intellectual
and physical challenges
for teams.
Geography: Use maps,
compasses, & GPS
devices in the field.
Maths: Problem solve
mathematical riddles.
Plus: Improve
teamwork, confidence,
& gain new experiences. Orienteering
Develop map and compass skills by find-
ing control points throughout Gibside
using our official Orienteering map.
Geocaching
Teams follow their GPS devices to
discover riddles and challenges at each
geocache that they must solve together
to win.
Campfire Cooking
Practice traditional fire lighting followed
by cooking over the fire with choices
ranging from vegetable skewers to bread.
(Max. group size of 15, additional charges apply).

Exploring the
Natural World
Main curriculum links…
Science: Record
measurements, interpret
observations & evaluate
data, understand how
organisms are affected by
their environment & toxic
materials, and form a
deep understanding of
the importance of
biodiversity.
Geography: Learn about
hydrology, and the impact
of people on a landscape
over time.
River Study
Walk alongside the Derwent River
and learn about some of the
important issues facing our water
bodies and its wildlife.
Pond Health Study
Through wildlife identification and
other scientific tests, assess and
compare the water quality of our
ponds. Best paired with the river
study.
Habitat Study
Conduct a scientific experiment
using line transects and quadrats to
discover the biodiversity of our
meadows. Can be adapted for A level
OCR coursework.
GIBSIDE STABLES
Team Building
Help your classes break the ice or destress
with some team building activities.
Team Games
Take part in a mix of activities that
build trust and confidence from
blindfolded walks to exciting
challenges… like Honeypot!
Conservation Activities
Make a mark on Gibside and help our
conservation work with tasks such as
Rhododendron bashing and tree
planting. Activities are dependent on
what is available at the time of year.
Ice Breakers
Quick fire activities will get the groups
talking and thinking as a team. These
will lead into our team games.
Groups will improve their problem solving and communication
skills as they build connections with each other and develop
confidence within themselves.
