Making time to sit down and look back at things in retrospect is sometimes hard to do in the fast paced world that we live in today. Compound that by the vocation and lifestyle that most of you that will read this have chosen, and maybe you can appreciate where I’m about to come from with this welcome to YOU, our guests. It is often taught in most any workshop you attend, that having a goal is essential to the success of any endeavor. But thinking back 12-15 years ago, I’d be lying if I told you that this 10TH Annual Gibbs Farms Bull and Female Sale was a goal of ours. Dreaming about or wishing to someday have “a” sale to market our own home grown product was stretching it about as far as we could’ve possibly hoped. I know there are operations out there whose history makes 10 sales look like the NFL preseason, but let me assure you that what you, our friends and customers, have helped us accomplish feels like a playoff game to us. In our eyes today, the stakes are even higher to produce the product that will make YOU, our customer, successful and to help YOU do it.

As in every sale before, we have tried to show consistency with how it is carried out, while always looking for anything to improve your experience with us. A real eye catcher blaze face Simmental bull and a powerhouse SimAngus bull will be on display at the Sunbelt Expo in Moultrie Ga. We’ve left off the formal one day open house normally 2 weeks prior to the sale, and to fit everyone’s schedule, are giving you invitation to our perpetual open house. After spending much of the summer building our 250 acre heifer development facility, now the females, will be sire grouped and easy to look at just like the bulls. And finally, as far as changes go, all bulls, even those that will be offered private treaty the Friday following our sale, will be videoed for your inspection on our website. Time will prohibit us from doing every female, but we will do 40-50, designed to give you a very good representation of what we have to offer.

Gibbs Farms will be happy to arrange delivery of your sale purchase for the following guaranteed delivery fees. In order for us to guarantee these delivery fees, you must make arrangements to receive your purchased animals when Gibbs Farms has a delivery truck coming through or into your area. For delivery to be made direct to your farm, you must have a safe place to unload a 24’–30’ gooseneck trailer. If you are unable to safely unload a large trailer or if you are not available to receive your animals when our trailer is delivering in your area, you will need to make arrangements to pick up your animals at your convenience at Gibbs Farms.

Sale TermsHerd Health... Every sale animal and the entire Gibbs Farms breeding herd is properly vaccinated and boostered annually for 7-Way Clostridium, IBR-BVD-BRSV-PI3, Hamophilus Somnus, Pasturella, Leptospirosis, and Vibriosis. All heifers are calfhood vaccinated for Brucellosis and every calf born on the farm each year is tested for BVD-PI. All animals on the farm are treated at least twice annually with a parasitic pour-on and at least once annually with Safe-Guard drench. All bulls have successfully passed a complete breeding soundness exam.

Guarantee on the Sale Females... Every open heifer selling is guaranteed to be open at the time of the sale and guaranteed to be a satisfactory breeder provided they are managed for proper and acceptable nutritional and physical health. In the event a heifer proves to be a non-breeder, the customer must contact Gibbs Farms on or before May 15, 2016 to make a claim. A veterinarian’s statement will be required and Gibbs Farms reserves the right to have the heifer returned if deemed necessary. The customer will be given a full credit (minus salvage value of the original heifer) to be used in a future Gibbs Farms Sale. Every bred female is guaranteed to be bred on sale day as stated in the sale catalog or as updated from the auctioneer at the time of the sale. In the event any bred female is found to not be bred as represented when sold, the customer needs to contact Gibbs Farms immediately and no later than May 15, 2016. The customer will be given a satisfactory credit on a future Gibbs Farms Sale. Remember: All potential claims must be made to Doug Gibbs or Gordon Hodges at Gibbs Farms on or before May 15, 2016.

Genetic Conditions . . . The knowledge and testing technology for all types of genetic conditions is almost changing daily. What we knew to be policy yesterday may be obsolete today. Our policy at Gibbs Farms is to fully follow and abide by any and all testing and reporting policy pertaining to genetic conditions as recommended by the American Simmental Association. We further state that our personal policy is to not market any animals known to be carriers or suspected of being carriers of any genetic conditions classified by the ASA as lethal and/or high occurrence. On any animals known to be carriers of other non-lethal genetic conditions that the ASA recommends testing, we will test and provide results on any animals marketed. For full disclosure and explanation of all genetic conditions monitored by the ASA, please refer to the TraitTrac shown on their individual pedigree on the ASA website.

Retained Semen Revenue Interest... Gibbs Farms retains a 1/3 semen revenue interest in each bull selling. On every bull, you are purchasing full possession, full salvage value, full decision making, and 2/3 semen revenue interest. The Gibbs Farms retained interest only comes into play if semen is marketed on a bull.

Guarantee on the Sale Bulls... Every bull selling is guaranteed to be sound on sale day to the best of our knowledge and has successfully passed a complete breeding soundness exam performed by Dr. Phillip Wilson within 60 days of sale time.

Full Purchase Value Extended Warranty on the Sale Bulls... Every bull selling carries a 100% guarantee extended warranty for one breeding season, provided the bull is managed for proper and acceptable nutritional and physical health, not to exceed six months beyond sale day. In the event a customer has any problem with a bull (health, injury, or death) prior to or during the bulls first breeding season, prior to May 15, 2016, the customer should immediately contact Gibbs Farms to report a claim. A veterinarian’s statement of the problem will be required and Gibbs Farms reserves the right to have the bull returned if deemed necessary. A replacement bull of mutually agreed upon quality will be provided if Gibbs Farms has one available with delivery expense to the customer not to exceed the Gibbs Farms Assisted Delivery amounts on regular sale day animals. In the event a satisfactory replacement bull is not available, the customer will be given a full credit (minus salvage value of the original bull) to be used in a future Gibbs Farms Sale. Gibbs Farms will not be held responsible under any circumstances for any settlement amount exceeding the purchase price of the bull. Remember: All potential claims must be made to Doug Gibbs or Gordon Hodges at Gibbs Farms on or before May 15, 2016.

Using EPDs | Catalog Codes

Quick Guide to EPDs & IndexesExpected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in the progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units.) The key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, then only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to develop the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6000.) A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ Indexes visit www.simmental.org.

EPD Percentile RankEstimating an animal’s genetic merit is much easier using percentile rank than using the actual EPD. For instance, if you are interested in purchasing a high growth bull, rather than attempting to remember what numerical number EPD is high for weaning and yearling EPD, simply rely on the percentile rank. By selecting a higher percentile rank, you will be selecting a bull with more growth genetics. A bull in the top 10% of the breed will have much more growth than a bull in the top 30% of the breed. Every animal in this year’s sale catalog has their percentile rank listed right under their EPD, making it easy to recognize where they rank within the breed.

This true multi-breed genetic evaluation is now the largest genetic evaluation in the world totaling over 16 million animal records and adding over 400,000 new animals annually.

We selected ROBUST as the high selling bull out of the 2013 Gateway Bull Sale for his outcross pedigree, exceptional birth to yearling spread, and elite carcass value. The yearlings selling in this year’s sale are our oldest ROBUST progeny but he had sons featured in several of the late winter and spring bull sales this year. His first year of progeny data has resulted in him ranking in the top 1% of the breed for ADG, Doc, Tenderness, and TI. His predicted birth to yearling spread has proven a reality as he ranks in the top 2% of the breed for YW, top 10% for CE, and maintains breed average for BW. ROBUST has matured into a massive muscle and middle individual with excellent hoof and leg soundness. Gibbs Farms bulls are developed in large pastures consisting of primarily KY-31 Fescue to insure they acclimate to the Fescue endophyte as they develop. They are supplemented a low energy ration consisting of ground grass hay, soyhull pellets, peanut hull pellets, and enough extruded cottonseed meal to balance their protein needs. They are never feed a high starch cereal grain. We develop the bulls slowly on the low energy ration in an effort to produce a bull that is ready to breed at 14 months old and will stay sound long term.

Same as with the SimAngus, our heavy use of STETSON the past two years has been to add daughters to the herd. Yes, they are really that good. It took us a few years to learn that he was not just a bull for use on heifers. Now we know he is going to be one of the great cow producing bulls of the breed. Our Purebred Simmental offering of STETSON sons this year leads off with several bulls that have a little more performance power and muscle than is typical, but they will still have the great maternal producing potential. The list of great Purebred Simmental bulls ranking in the top 1% of the breed for CE is rather short and STETSON sits at the top along with his top 1% API and his very high carcass value traits make him a bull that will impact our industry through his daughters for many generations.

This is the first of three embryo full brothers out of N341 MABELLE. We purchased GRADUATE and ALUMNI four years ago and IN FORCE three years ago, all three from South Dakota State University and all three are sired by the great maternal sire, Hooks Shear Force 38K. GRADUATE and IN FORCE have each emerged as elite calving ease sires ranking in the top 1% of the breed for both CE and BW. ALUMNI has established himself as a higher performance sire with tremendous carcass value, ranking in the top 1% of the breed for Marb and REA. GRADUATE and ALUMNI each rank in the top 1% of the breed for Shear, the EPD that measures tenderness, an EPD that needs to be concentrated on much more than it is. There are slight differences in the three sires, but all three are producing females with great genetic value and excellent soundness of structure, udder, and teats. All three are going to be great female producing sires along with all their other highly economically important traits.

Replacement Heifer Development When we make the statement that we develop our heifers in a “real

world” environment, we seriously mean that. As soon as our heifers are weaned, they go right back out on pastures that are a mixture of Fescue and any common summer grass that can compete, maybe a little common Bermuda or crab grass. Our heifers graze the same grass we feel our customers will likely be grazing. Our heifers have free choice Gibbs Farms Summer R800 mineral and BC Calving & Re-breeding w/MFP tubs along with a very limited amount of heifer developer ration made with ground hay, soyhull pellets, peanut hull pellets, and a small amount of extruded cottonseed meal. We basically try to manage the heifers so they develop properly, but never get fat.

Performance DataWe collect all data on our heifers from birth through yearling, including

carcass ultrasound scans. We have been collecting and reporting complete data on all our bulls, heifers, and steers to the American Simmental Association for decades, so the EPD’s of our cow herd have slightly higher accuracy than you may expect. The EPD’s reported in the sale catalog for the fall yearling heifers were downloaded from the ASA after all data had been processed. We have also included the percentile rank of the EPD’s this year, making it much easier to select for the traits you prefer placing the most emphasis.

Each year there seems to always be one sire group that sort of rises to the top and shines bright for the sale and there is no question, this is the year for PALEFACE. It probably helped that he was the natural service sire on our top group of Purebred Angus cows two years ago resulting in this power packed group of daughters. Everyone that sees PALEFACE is highly impressed with him as an individual. He is not a very large frame bull, but is massive muscle and middle, super sound on his feet and legs, and a great disposition. Marty Ropp has commented many times that PALEFACE has the best hoof that he has ever seen on any Purebred Simmental bull and he has seen plenty of them. This sire group will lead off with five pictured heifers that are as stout as any heifers in the sale and the quality goes about 10 heifers deep before changing.




There is just no way to make one much better than this heifer. She has the feminine look along with the massive rib capacity and perfect structural soundness. Her MISSING LINK dam is not very big in frame, but makes up for it in body capacity and beautiful looks.

STETSON has established himself as a very high accuracy calving ease sire, ranking in the top 1% of the breed for CE EPD and has had a reputation of calving as easily as Angus calving ease sires in the ASA Heifer Calving Project at Montana State University. He is not a high performance sire by no means so for several years we only used him on heifers and retained very few daughters. As those daughters matured into cows it became

very obvious to us that STETSON had far more to offer the industry than simply being used to breed heifers. His daughters matured into some of the most impressive cows in the pasture with perfectly shaped udders and teats, weaning huge calves. With high accuracy, STETSON now ranks in the top 5% of the breed for MM, top 15% for MCE, top 25% for STAY, and top 1% API. Making him even more valuable genetically is his tremendous carcass value with a top 10% ranking for YG, top 4% for Marb, top 30% for REA, top 4% for Tenderness, and a top 15% for TI. No, he is not a high performance sire and no, his daughters will not overly impress you with growth as calves and yearlings, but when they reach two years of age, build a beautiful udder, and raise some of the biggest calves in the pasture, very few of them will be for sale. There are some very special heifers in this year’s offering of Purebred Simmental Stetson daughters, tapping into some of the best genetics we have. This heifer is actually very stout for a yearling STETSON, so no excuses need to be made about her looks, she is nice. Bred Heifer Offering Our bred female offering this year includes 29 bred heifers, 25 bred

young cows, and 1 older proven donor cow, for a total of 55 bred females. We wanted to offer at least 50 bred females this year and since we only had 29 bred heifers, we decided to include a very nice group of three year old females. Last year we were very pleased that the Index Vales of our bred females averaged the highest in the history of our sale with API averaging

128 and TI averaging 72. We are very proud to announce that the average Index Values of the 55 bred females this year shatters those averages. The 55 bred females this year have an average API of 141.0 ranking them in the top 15% of the breed for API as a group. The average TI is 73.8 ranking them in the top 25% of the breed for the group. The group of bred females in this year’s sale offer tremendous positive genetic potential.

Of the 29 bred heifers, 27 are bred to J BAR J NIGHTRIDE 225Z, S D S IN FORCE 112Y, and TJ 181W HY SLUGGER, all three proven calving ease bulls ranking in the top 1% -2% of the breed for CE and BW EPD’s. The young cows are bred mainly to the high performance sires GW ROBUST 605Z, GIBBS 0617XHY ULTRASOUND, and GIBBS 0601X RAISIN`CAIN, with a few bred to the exciting young sire, CCR WIDE RANGE 9005A.

All of the bred females have been running on pastures with predominantly KY-31 Fescue and a little mixed common warm season grass. They have been on the same complete vaccination program as the rest of our cow herd.

We had advertised that selection would be from almost 700 cows, but completely forgot that it would also include the 125 heifers that we are retaining as replacements this year, so actually the selection will be from approximately 800 females. Odds are there is probably at least one female in there somewhere that could add value to almost anyone’s herd. We will place a link on our website to an Excel spreadsheet file that will list all of the females, their pedigree, and their current EPD’s.

We ask that the selection be made no later than December 31, 2015. All normal management will continue on the cow herd until the buyer makes the selection. Our breeding season begins approximately November 25, so any selection made after that date may result in a female that has been bred. There is also a possibility that several cows in the herd may be selected for embryo flushing to be done the first week in December. In the event a cow has already began the protocol for superovulation and embryo flushing at the time of selection, Gibbs Farms reserves the right to retain half of the resulting embryos from that flush and provide half to the new owner of the cow. The new owner would then take full possession after that embryo flush. Any interested buyer with questions should contact Gordon Hodges.
