LAHORE, Oct 23: An exhibition of miniature paintings titled ‘Class Room’ by Ghulam Husain Guddu, an artist from Sindh, opened at the Drawing Room Art Gallery on Tuesday. There are some 10 artworks on display — all have the same medium Gouache and pencil colour on Wasli. In this particular art show, artist Ghulam Husain, a graduate from the National College of Arts, has tried to combine the memories of his childhood when he used to observe his father doing weaving and had blended contemporary experience of miniature paintings with that of craft skill. A number of art institution students also gathered at the gallery and drew sketches on the occasion. “Ghulam Husain is a trained miniaturist and opts to experiment with the genre which has a hallowed history. He has combined his knowledge of weaving, the traditional craft and take up the debate of miniature as “High art or craft,” says Beaconhouse National University’s School of Visual Arts dean Salima Hashmi. “The simplicity in the art of Ghulam Husain is interesting and intriguing. Inspired with children’s drawing, he constructs his images like the pattern weaved through in paper. His work deals with the idea of craft and the innocence of expression both combined and blended in a new manner.” “Husain’s work is different and distinct due to its imagery, technique and sensibility and opens up a range of possibilities both for the artist and his viewers,” says art critic Quddus Mirza. The exhibition will remain on display till Oct 31.
