Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We’ve been busy preparing for Christmas over the last few weeks!

We’ve been getting ready for our Christmas Tea Party for the elderly on Wednesday

19th December, when about 50 elderly residents from the local community have been invited to a Christmas Party. Pupils from the School Council have organised the whole

event, from making and sending invitations, to organising the entertainment to baking cakes and serving the tea and coffee.

According to Glenthorne tradition, pupils from all year groups have been bringing in

hundreds of food items - jars of jam, chocolates and other treats - to wrap up in small hampers or party bags to give to the elderly as a Christmas gift after the party. Many

thanks to pupils and parents for these gifts.

We’ve also been getting ready for our Christmas Carol Service which will be held at All

Saints Church, Carshalton at 6.30pm on Thursday 20th December. All parents, pupils and friends of the school are most welcome and it is always one of the highlights of the

school calendar.

Staff and Governors at the school would like to take this opportunity to wish all parents and pupils a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

We look forward to seeing all pupils back at school at 8.30am on Monday 7th

January.

Children in Need

Pupils really got into the spirit of Children in Need Day on Friday 16th November,

dressing up in mufti on the theme of multi-coloured spots, making cakes with the

Pudsey Bear logo and donating to charity through a variety of sponsored events.

Congratulations to everybody who got involved and to everyone who made a

donation; all the money raised will be given to the “Liam Hearne Tribute Fund” which

in turn contributes its fundraising to the NSPCC.

An afternoon with Paul Burstow

On the 14th November, the entire 6th form had the opportunity to meet and discuss current issues with

the former Health Minister and Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Sutton and Cheam. This was

a tremendous opportunity for the 6th Form as it helped to expand our political knowledge and heightened

our awareness of local issues and political systems and procedures.

After a talk from Mr Burstow, the 6th form had the opportunity to ask him many interesting questions and

discussed a range of controversial topics; from the rise in University tuition fees, to understanding the

formation of the Coalition Government and the notorious MPs‟ expenses scandal. The 6th form

participated with great enthusiasm and absorbed all the information given to us from Mr Burstow as well

as listening to each other‟s opinions.

An issue of key importance to me was the following question voiced by a fellow student: “How do you

feel about the cuts to the NHS?” Mr Burstow explained that personally he disliked the effect that cuts

were having on the quality of health in the local area. However, he also explained that he was all for

maximising the value for money that tax payers get from the NHS. He thought it was important to look

for effective ways to save money. Despite this, he did make it clear that he was fervently against the

closure of our local St Helier Hospital‟s A&E and Maternity wards. He felt that this closure could

potentially jeopardise the health of his constituents.

This summary of our afternoon with Mr Burstow is just a snapshot of the many controversial, topical and

interesting discussions that were explored by the 6th form. The afternoon was no doubt a success and

students and we were all pleased with interactive participation they were able to engage in with our local

MP.

We would like to thank Mr Burstow for taking his time to visit us and answer our questions. He made us

feel like valued current and future voters.

Year 10 Food Technology Trip to Borough Market, London &

Choccywoccydoodah, Carnaby Street

The Year 10 GCSE Food Technology students are currently completing a project on the “Best of British food” and needed to get some more inspiration of local and seasonal ingredients that they could use to come up with their own menu for a Brit-ish restaurant.

Accompanied by Miss Djemil, Mrs Puddy and Mrs Holmes, the first stop was by the riverside at London Bridge, where the students explored British restaurants to gain more of an idea of current meals, ingredients and prices. They discovered many restaurant serving foods from other cultures as well!

The next stop was to Borough Market nearby, which for some was their first visit to a market of this size. With cheese, bread, oils, cakes, breads and meats available, there was something for everyone to try, including over 28 different varieties of tomatoes and more than 15 different types of mushrooms!

Here the students were able to sample many different British foods include locally cured and smoked meats, home-made chutneys and sauces as well cheeses from not too far away in Sussex. Although a little bit more expensive than those in the shops, the students were so impressed with the foods that they bought some products as well.

There were also Christmas biscuits and cakes using organic or fair-trade ingredients and some were even more adventurous

and tried Venison burgers or spices and sauces

influenced by Caribbean and other cultures.

After having lunch by the riverside and to also try out more of their purchases, the group then

looked at a variety of other restaurants, bakeries and food shops near Carnaby Street. Finally, they visited the one place they had been looking forward to all day and the shop that frequently is on TV, Choccywoccydoodah!

Full of festive spirit , glitter and also a few fantastic chocolate cake sculptures, this store provided a great source of inspirational insight for future cake ideas. However if they wanted to order anything, the minimum cost would be about £400 for a basic cake and they would need to wait 6 months to even get on the waiting list!

Some of the Year 10s were also lucky enough to meet Christine, the owner of Choccywoccydoodah, who told them a little bit more about the types of prod-ucts they make and was also happy to have photos with them as well. With boxes of handcrafted Christmas chocolates, fresh ingredients from the market and “bag-fulls” of inspiration, the students then made their way back home. They were exceptionally well behaved all day and have spoken about the trip much since!

Textiles Clothes Show Trip 2012 On the 8th December we visited the Clothes Show in Birmingham. Years 10, 11 and 12 were fascinated by the amazing sights on view at the show. At the Clothes Show there were university and college stands with work on display to inspire ideas for our coursework. We were also able to seek advice from both course leaders and current university students which was invaluable for deciding our route into fashion and textiles. There was also a catwalk show that gave us an insight into the fashion industry. Fantastic designs from graduates demonstrated to everyone that they could also aspire to show their clothes on a catwalk one day. It also included stunning dance routines that created an electric atmosphere within the arena. Overall it was a truly inspiring trip and a brilliant day out! Written by Molly Sandford, Y12.

French and Spanish Spelling Bees The MFL Spelling Bee in our class took place on Tuesday 11 and

Wednesday 12 December. Mrs Lopez and other MFL teachers held a

Class Competition, which meant that everyone in the class would have a

go and the three people with the highest score would go through to the

School Competition! Glenthorne High School is not the only school

entering, there are plenty of other schools such as Carshalton Girls.

A lot of people enjoyed this! Some pupils said it was fun and challenging

but a bit scary! We thought it was fun and everyone had a laugh. In prep-

aration for the Spelling Bee, everybody was given booklets with all 50 words which they had to

learn; also on Tuesday lunchtimes there was Spelling Bee Club with Mrs Sentamil and Year 8 Lan-

guage Mentors Aaron Baker and Alice-May Dutfield.

You had one minute to translate as many words as you could from English into Spanish and then

spell them in Spanish. Some of the words were “Hola”; “por favor” and words like that! In Mrs

Lopez‟s class, once you had finished you would get a sweet! In our class we had four top spellers:

Jessica Williams, Archie Jennings, Nia Charles and Cristina Vuolo but only 3 could go through so there was a really exciting round of “Sudden Death”. This involved elimination if any of the

contestants incorrectly spelt a word!

We personally thought it was really fun! It tested us and others to the max! Although it was hard

to learn the 50 words it was all worth it in the end!

Sports U15 Floor and Vault Gymnastics competition „A big well done to the U15 girls; Nancy Devonport, Ashleigh Blenkinsopp, Samantha Mills, Lauren James,

Rachael Stepney and Kelsey Morris for 6th place at the Surrey Floor and Vault gymnastics championships

on the 29th November 2012.

The girls‟ scores were collated to provide an overall mark for the team, therefore it was fantastic to see

the girls working hard as a team and putting all effort in to represent Glenthorne. Independently, Nancy

Devonport received a fantastic score of 8.2 out of 10 for floor and 9.0 out of 10 for vault, achieving 2nd

place overall out of 55 gymnasts!

As a whole, the girls worked extremely hard every day in preparation for the competition and

accomplished a great achievement!

GYMNASTICS TUMBLING COMPETITION On the 12th November 2012 the gymnastics squad competitors were required to compete in the Surrey

Schools tumbling competition. Glenthorne showed excellent representation by having three whole teams

enter the competition. The U13s‟ team included Grace Allen, Megan Ashby, Megan McAndrew, Anna

Merca, Ellis Stokes and Ellie Trayfoot. In the U15s‟ team was Nancy Devonport, Ashleigh Blenkinsopp,

Samantha Mills, Lauren James and Rachael Stepney. Finally, the U19s‟ team included Hannah Ainge, Sarah

Wallis, Jamie Morris, Natalie Rumbelow and Danielle Swan. The girls certainly had an enjoyable day and

definitely gave massive support to each other. All the teams performed really well, achieving 8th (U13), 4th

(U15) and 6th (U19) place overall – Well done girls!

Sports Football Results

Year 7 Football Sutton Cup and Surrey Cup Well done to the year 7 football team that has been successful in both Cup competitions.

On Wednesday 24th October, the team beat Sutton Grammar 6 – 1 with George Walker

scoring a particularly memorable overhead kick from an accurate cross by Scott Walker.

The Surrey Cup game was played on Tuesday 3rd December against a strong Collingwood

team. The score was 4-1 to Glenthorne at half time and after an early goal in the second

half from Josh Tully, completing his hat trick in style, it looked like the game was over.

However, Collingwood did not give up, making a late surge in the second half, resulting in a

final score of 6-4 to Glenthorne.
