Yugen Philosophy
Yugen Photography compositions are digital haiga based on a
style of Japanese painting and the aesthetics of haiku poetry. In
haiga, poetry and imagery combine to reveal the mystery of simple,
and at times revealing, images of the everyday world. In my haiga
print series, photographs often combine with poetry, zenga, and
textures to create meditative art for your home.
Ghost Flower Series
The Ghost Flowers series takes the natural beauty of flowers and
reveals their inner yugen. We see flowers all the time, but when
you look very closely, you become aware of another world.The images
in this catalog are from a growing collection of high-resolution
scans of blossoms, digitally enhanced to extract the beauty behind
the everyday face of flowers, juxtaposed against contrasting
textures such as wood, washi, and metal. The size and brilliant
clarity of the images on your wall will bring a sense of the other
worlds that surround your busy human life.
On The Concept of Yugen - (yoo-gane)Yugen is a sense, a sight, a
sound, that reveals -- for a brief moment -- the mystery behind the
world. Yugen is the substance behind a haiku moment. The detail
that makes you take a second look at a photograph or painting and
holds your eye. It is an image that portrays karumi -- a light
beauty with subtlety, such as a shallow river over a sandy bed
(Basho).
Ygen is an important concept in traditional Japanese aesthetics.
The exact translation of the word depends on the context. In the
Chinese philosophical texts the term was taken from, ygen meant
"dim", "deep" or "mysterious". In the criticism of Japanese waka
poetry, it was used to describe the subtle profundity of things
that are only vaguely suggested by the poems, and was also the name
of a style of poetry (one of the ten orthodox styles delineated by
Fujiwara no Teika in his treatises).
Yugen suggests that beyond what can be said but is not an
allusion to another world. It is about this world, this experience.
All of these are portals to yugen. "To watch the sun sink behind a
flower clad hill. To wander on in a huge forest without thought of
return. To stand upon the shore and gaze after a boat that
disappears behind distant islands. To contemplate the flight of
wild geese seen and lost among the clouds, and subtle shadows of

Notes on prints.
All images are available on photo satin inkjet paper or glossy
aluminum substrate. Inkjet prints are printed with HP inks which
are expected to last 80 years without fading. However, HP
recommends to NOT place prints in direct sunlight.
Aluminum prints are very durable and can be placed in areas of
high humidity and direct sunlight. They come ready to hang.
Prices of framed prints include EcoColor wood frames in Dark
Cherry, Light Cherry, or Brushed Silver, with acrylic glass and an
acid-free mounting board.
Shipping within the continental US, via UPS Ground: Unframed
prints $15. Framed and Aluminum Prints are approximately $25.
