Gandhi•Born October 2, 1869•Gandhi was an average student in school and studied abroad in London to become a lawyer, it was here that his interest in spirituality and philosophy took root.•It was not until he went to South Africa that he started to see the racism directed at Indians throughout the British empire and as a result became actively interested in social activism.

• Gandhi returned to India in 1915 and focused on Indian politics and refined his “noncooperation” movement.

• He stayed out of politics most of the 1920’s until 1928 when he lead the salt march.

• He was the figurehead of Indian independence through nonviolent civil disobedience and won India its independence, although he opposed partitioning it.

• Assassinated 1n 1948 by Hindu extremists.

He was released on Feb 2, 1990 and resumed leadership of the ANC

Four years later on May 10 Mandela was Elected in the countries first multi-racial election as the countries first black president. Mandela’s negotiations with the president as well has his urges for peace helped make this possible.

A figurehead for hope and peace in the African nation his nonviolent protests helped pave the way for future civil rights victories.

Today he spends most of his time on the aids and poverty issues.
