The Dean’s Editorial

Dear Graduates,

We are fast approaching the end of 2012 and the snow

has reappeared on the mountains. I am sure that you all

have happy memories of those snow-capped mountains!

I am pleased to be able to take advantage of this

newsletter to let you know that GGSB has gone up by 8

places in the latest FT ranking of European Business

Schools to put us in 21st place in Europe out of 80

business schools. These last few weeks have been busy

ones at GGSB.

I have just returned from Beijing where our MIB program is now open bringing the

MIB network of campuses to a total of 4 – Grenoble, London, Singapore and Beijing.

We are hoping to encourage students to move between these sites, adding another

dimension to an already rich and exciting program.

You have probably heard about our new MSc program in Fashion, Design and

Luxury Management that started both in Grenoble and in London last September.

The Luxury sector is one of the fastest growing sectors and one that is increasingly

using technology contrary to what one might think. Our students will be visiting the

Burberry store in London which is full of the latest technologies.

Finally GGSB Executive Education is also growing and our alumni are increasingly

turning to us for custom programs in management for the companies that they work

for. I sincerely hope that wherever you are you are well and enjoying an enriching

professional and personal life.

Perhaps you will have the opportunity to take some rest over the holiday period and

enjoy some quality time with your families. So wherever you may be I would like to

wish you all the best for the Holiday season and I hope that I will meet up with you at

one of our alumni reunions in the near future. Happy Holidays and All the Best for

2013!

From Monique Garnier Cormons, GGSB Alumni Manager

Here we are in busy and snowy December - 2012 is coming to an end, 2013 is fast approaching! This is a time to reflect on our progress and the continuous improvements we have worked on. Do we meet the Alumni’s expectations? What do they expect?

to be proud of their school and for it to improve its position in the international rankings

to enjoy support in their career/business,

to keep in touch with their class-mates,

to have visibility on our Alumni community on sectors of activities, salaries etc…for the different programs

to continue learning

You will find most of the answers reading the newsletter.

We have maintained progress and position in the rankings. GGSB gained eight places in the European Business Schools ranking the Financial Times (FT) publishes annually, having been ranked 21st in Europe. Competition is fierce, the economy is in turmoil and involvement from our graduates is a key factor in strengthening the international recognition of our programs with your future employers.

We now provide Alumni career support in Paris and in London. I am happy to announce that Kate des Places, GGSB MIB 2008 distinguished Alumnus has just joined the team and will lead workshops.

We conduct GGSB placement surveys to provide information on employment conditions for the different graduating classes.

We maintain better contact with our Alumni with regular news emails from Program Directors

We have elected Student Program Ambassadors and you can contact them if you have any ideas about keeping in touch and getting together.

GGSB Executive Education designs intensive seminars to strengthen your management skills

We organize networking events “GEM/GGSB around the world”. Next one will be in Paris on 17 January! You need to find GEM ambassadors around the world. Just google GEM in… The major event is obviously the GGSB Graduation Ceremony and GALA VERSION 2013 on 16 March. The Gala is a symbolic event for the entire GGSB community and a wonderful opportunity for future graduate to meet. This year the theme is “Venetian Carnival”!

Meanwhile, enjoy reading our newsletter and I hope that everyone will have a great holiday season and that you all are looking forward to 2013 as much as I am. All the best for 2013! Monique Garnier Cormons GGSB Alumni Manager

FROM KATE DES PLACES, MIB 2008 Consultant, Founder KDP Communications Consulting

KDP COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTING: A personalized approach to cross-cultural communications

KDP COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTING’s mission is to provide a truly personalized approach to effective and authentic communication in English. The founder, Kate des Places, completed GGSB’s MIB in 2008 and moved to Paris where she worked for several years in international communications before setting up her own business. “I noticed a gap in the market for tailor-made, client focused translation and international communications expertise. Hiring permanent bilingual staff is expensive and client needs vary from project to project. I establish a long-term relationship with my clients and become familiar with their business strategy, which enables me to provide them with accurate advice and the ‘face-time’ that they don’t get with traditional service providers.”

KDP designs services around the needs of the client. For Start Ups and SMEs, clients can purchase KDP Credits which correspond to Kate’s time. Over the course of the year and when needs arise, clients can use these credits in exchange for a variety of services such as translation, proofreading, presentation advice or copywriting. “The KDP Credits system respects the client’s need for an efficient response no matter how small the project or how last-minute the need.” Kate’s background growing up, studying and working in London, New York and Europe has equipped her with a unique outlook on the cross-cultural use of English in international communications. She shares this insight with individuals through a range of services: CV and career profile writing, interview preparation and business English advice. “I make it a point of always meeting face-to-face with my clients to provide a truly personalized service and remaining available after the job is done for any further questions and modifications.” Kate claims that her priority is helping clients find their very own ‘English-voice’. “I love playing with language and get real satisfaction out of helping others achieve their goals through effectively communicating their potential.” In December 2012, Kate joined the Grenoble’s Graduate Network Alumni Careers Team as an external consultant and will be leading three new workshops in Paris and Grenoble in 2013. FROM MARIE MURE-RAVAUD, MSc MARKETING 2009 Founder and CEO of Job Me Tender

Job Me Tender: Become the HR director of your love life

Job Me Tender is the new comer revolutionizing the French digital dating industry. The project was founded and launched by a GGSB alumnus, Marie Mure-Ravaud.

Job Me Tender is a dating website where women recruit their Prince Charming like Human Resources Directors. The website offers all the tools usually used by head hunters for meeting a love partner: CV, motivation letter, group interviews, face-to-face interviews, questionnaires… Nowadays, women are active and demanding. And for them, picking a life partner is as important as hiring a CEO if they were at the head of a multinational company. Job Me Tender helps those working-women managing their love life in an easier and smarter way.

The website was officially launched in France 2 months ago and several thousands of members already registered, only from word of mouth. The concept is creating a real buzz and already got largely covered by the media. The project carries a great potential bringing confidence for the future. Funds will be raised in the beginning of 2013 enabling for a first communication campaign and the development of a mobile app. Discover the project at www.jobmetender.fr.

FROM FRANCE From Emeline Bartoli, MIB 25 - Product manager on mobile & tablet Orange and Grenoble Ecole de Management launched a "Digital native" Chair

After completing a MIB and DESMA at Grenoble Ecole de Management I was hired through Orange Graduate Programme. I'm currently working for Orange Sales House : Orange Advertising as a product manager on mobile & tablet. As a Digital native and therefore strong believer of digital, my everyday work gives me the opportunity to look in depth into fascinating subjects like for example ad targeting and rich-media formats. It also gives me the opportunity to be part of the fast-changing digital world. Recently, Orange and Grenoble Ecole de Management launched a "Digital native" Chair. This research and teaching chair will be under the responsibility of Benoit Meronin, research professor

at Grenoble Ecole de Management and Stephanie Hospital Executive Vice President, Audience and Advertising Orange and former GEM Student. Within the context of launching this chair Stephanie Hospital also launched the Grenoble Ecole de Management alumni community at Orange. I organized the first event that took place in Paris last September. The major ambition is to enhance the links between Grenoble Ecole de Management and Orange, multiply the opportunities for its members and ensure the saying "get in touch stay in touch" is a reality.

FROM USA

From Rasha Nasher, MBA 2011 Grenoble MBA Takes Marketing Expert to Hewlett Packard HQ in Silicon Valley

Marketing strategist Rasha Nasher joined the firm's HQ after interning for them in France while on the Grenoble MBA.

Rasha Nasher MBA 2011. Originally from Yemen, she grew up all over the Middle East and became hooked on computer programming aged five. Rasha Nasher’s first memory of being passionate about IT was as a five-year-old in Saudi Arabia, so we aren’t surprised to find her in Silicon Valley, home to the world’s largest technology firms. Rasha, 31, graduated from the Grenoble Ecole de Management full-time MBA in 2011. The computer scientist had joined the programme after working in several technical roles. Prior to the Grenoble MBA, Rasha was employed as the IT regional project coordinator for Halliburton’s Middle East and Africa business. Rasha has been with HP since July 2010 when she started off as an MBA intern in France. She later transferred to HP’s office in the San Francisco Bay area to work as a marketing strategist. She’s only been living and working in Silicon Valley for about four months but we couldn’t resist quizzing her about what really goes on in those massive "campuses" and what it takes to get there.

She shares her first impressions and offers some advice for MBAs who would like to move their careers forward in a similar way...

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you discovered your passion for IT? I come from Yemen but I've grown up in so many different places. I lived in Saudi Arabia until I moved for high school to Yemen. I studied my undergraduate in Iraq and I also had the chance to take some programming related courses in Egypt. I feel very fortunate because before I was 20 I lived in four different countries and gained exposure to different cultures.

Studying a computer sciences degree was one of my biggest life decisions and I'm glad I did it because IT is definitely a lifetime passion for me. In ten years time, I see myself working within it, perhaps from a different angle but still in it.

Page 6: GGSB Alumni Newsleter December 2012

It’s a huge deal for me that I'm working with HP because it’s an area I'm passionate about and I'm motivated that my work gives meaning to my life. Do you have any advice for MBAs who would like to work in Silicon Valley? The first thing to note is that it's a highly competitive environment. There are many large companies but there's also a lot of talent. You need to know your strengths and your competencies, match them alongside your desires and then you start your job search. Companies here are very selective when it comes to hiring people so building a strong network is a smart move because it will help you find the job you want, and also in your day-to-day role. Another thing is to be ready for challenges. Sometimes you are presented with assignments where its difficult to know how to start but knowing what your strengths are and being able to tap into your network will help you overcome those challenges. How would you like to grow your career in the coming years? I definitely want to leverage my position in HP to build a strong experience, improve my skills and learn more, and eventually establish myself within a management role. I know many former HP top managers employees later left who succeeded to go into entrepreneurial ventures, and I also want to acquire strong entrepreneurial skill so one day, I will be able to run a business within the technology industry.

From Kelly Reichert, MSc Consulting 2010 White Bear Annonces Appointment of new Director and resignation of Secretary

White Bear Resources Inc. has appointed Kelly Reichert as a director of the company. Mr. Reichert is currently the president and chief executive officer of the company. He has more than 15 years of experience in executive and operations management. He served in the capacity of executive director and director of operations for the British Columbia Liberal Party from 1997 to 2011. Kelly was a senior aide to Premier Gordon Campbell and was part of the premier's management team that led the organization to three consecutive provincial election victories. He holds a master of business administration degree from Royal Roads University (Victoria, B.C.) and a postgraduate diploma in management consulting from the Grenoble Graduate School of Business (Grenoble, France).

FROM UNITED KINGDOM

From Jonas Abraham, Our MBA AMBAssador The MBA: an asset to career, a benefit to public service

While the middle letter stands for business, an MBA is not just the degree of choice for business professionals, writes Carol Turner from the Association of MBAs.

Many in the public service are seeing the value this postgraduate management degree brings to their career and to the public sector. From the National Health Service to the Navy, MBA graduates can be found in many different sectors of the public service. Wherever they work they have one thing in common, a clear belief that their MBA has bought benefit to their career and to their workplace.

The Association of MBAs' Global AMBAssador, Jonas Abraham works as business and performance manager at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest trusts in London offering a wide range of health and social care services across 10 boroughs.

He is responsible for designing a business and performance management system to benchmark, manage and report on quality delivery of healthcare. He says his MBA from Grenoble Graduate School of Business in France has been an invaluable asset in his work on this NHS project.

"My MBA has given me the knowledge and confidence to approach a huge project such as this. It allowed me to implement the skills the MBA teaches you to develop, including negotiation, leadership, decision making, strategy and

Page 7: GGSB Alumni Newsleter December 2012

change management. It allowed the senior management team to have trust and confidence in my ability to implement an innovative system that would improve business processes and performance framework." He feels the NHS would benefit from more business professionals with MBA education. "Given the complexities within the NHS, having more MBAs would add enormous value in terms of leadership and management practices."

While the NHS is beginning to change in its composition and provision of healthcare delivery, it is still dominated by clinicians at various senior levels. So the service with the biggest public sector budget in the UK does not have many people with formal MBA qualifications at the most important decision-making levels. Abraham says it looks like that might be changing as "most senior management positions being advertised require a formal postgraduate management qualification, or specifically an MBA as an essential requirement."

He says the top three reasons for studying for his MBA were: the technical knowledge (and the good stead this puts you in for your career progression), friendship (course mates and networking opportunities provided to me) and the practical knowledge that has helped him to understand the market better and build the skills to handle difficult situations more successfully and proficiently. FROM ITALIA From Florian Pellegrini, MSc in Finance London 2011

Before joining the MSc in Finance in London in September 2009, I was part of ESC Grenoble (Grande Ecole Programme). I took a gap year just before starting the MSc Finance and managed to get a one-year experience in Capital Markets as Derivatives Sales Assistant in France and the United Kingdom at BNP Paribas. Right after the MSc Finance, in June 2010, my previous team in BNP Paribas London offered me to come back for a 16-month fixed-term contract (VIE). I received a permanent job offer after 12 months and joined the Rates Derivatives Sales team in Milan in October 2011. I cover a portfolio of Italian Large Corporates and I am in touch with corporate treasuries on a daily basis. FROM GERMANY

From Andrea Becke, MSc Management Consulting 1 - 2012

Since April this year Andrea has been a full-time consultant with Accenture in Zurich

working in the Change Management (Management Consulting sector). She is still working

on her first project, Where she supports organizational cultural change through targeted

communication and training concepts. In terms of advice, Andrea notes “If anyone is

interested in working for one of the big consulting firms, it is probably best to get to know

some Consultants working there. As I have experienced it is much easier to get hired by

them if you know someone”.

Since Andrea completed initially an internship at Accenture in Germany, and then went through the various stages of the case study interview process at Accenture, this is sage advice indeed! [email protected].

FROM KENYA

From Joy Matwale, MSc Management Consulting 1 - 2012

Joy is currently working on a public sector project for KPMG Kenya – Nairobi and is

currently reviewing one of the Reform Institution’s Strategy Implementation. There are many

different interests at play in the job and it is very interesting to try to sass these out, as well

as making sure that as a team everyone is in agreement on what needs to be done for the

client in order to provide useful insights that will feed into the next period’s strategy. Joy has

been very happy to have landed a job in Management Consulting after getting back home.

KPMG Kenya has just recently set up the MC department and she is privileged to be

working with a very diverse team. The partner is from India and her director, now closely

mentoring Joy, is South African.

There is also a Kenyan in the project who lived all of her life in the US and is helping set up

the Healthcare line of business. So the diverse cultural and professional mix makes it a

great place to work. Joy notes “I greatly appreciated everything that I learned on the program and now that she is

actually working in the industry, it is all coming together and making a lot of sense. [email protected];

FROM FRANCE

From Yehya El Oueini, MSc Business Development 2012 - Account Manager at Michelin

The most valuable things I have learned at GGSB: The cultural diversity is the most valuable criteria for me, as I have learned to understand different mindsets from all around the world. Second, working under pressure became my every day job and enabled me to develop time management skills in order to meet several deadlines at the same time. It is truly important to know how to manage time in this fast-paced world. Managers don’t look at how much time you spend on your work but the results you deliver. I always liked working on different projects at the same time, like at my job as an Account Manager. Last but not least, the many professional presentations were key to the program as I learned to be convincing, which is really helpful in my work. My Experience as a Business Developer at Michelin : What are my main responsibilities as an Account Manager for the African, Indian, and Middle East zone? First and foremost, Africa, India, and Middle East are fast expanding areas with a lot of potential, that are very diversified, and GGSB prepared me well through the Live

Page 9: GGSB Alumni Newsleter December 2012

Business Cases. There is a 50% increase in profitability expected until 2020 in these zones. At Michelin, it is therefore all about prospection on emerging countries with a long-term perspective. For instance, in India, we are setting up a new plant, which requires a 660 million-euro investment. There is a huge potential for this country alone. Lastly, my responsibilities entail a regular follow up with the Commercial Director on annual commercial plans and strategy, and we aim at reaching our clients’ annual targets through proactive selling. I therefore manage a portfolio of clients on the zone. My clients are big distributors that are historical clients at Michelin. I maintain these relationships based on mutual trust and benefit in order to understand their needs and try to match our products and services with these needs. I also work closely on strategy to improve their marketing, distribution, and advertising approaches in order for them to be more profitable, and increase Michelin’s brand awareness in their respective country. It is a thrilling position with a link-up including Supply Chain, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Communication, among others. According to me the main qualities to become a successful Business Developer are: - Being proactive (with your clients and colleagues, as a whole) - Being a great negotiator (GGSB theory helped me become one) - Being flexible between theory learned at school and practical ‘know-how’ applied within the company What is the biggest obstacle I have faced as a Business Developer? I would say the age difference with the other employees. Overall, it was both an obstacle and an opportunity to learn more. Did I choose this job or did the job choose me? I was more interested in the company itself and the opportunities offered for the future. My personality was a fit with the job needs. Michelin does not hire for a position but hire for a career. It is a community. What is my salary (annually)? Michelin is part of the French stock market index CAC 40 and aims at placing itself as one top paying company in France. The average salary for a junior position in Marketing/Sales is between 30,000-40,000euros/year. A piece of advice to the current MSc Business Development class Take advantage of what you are currently learning at school, especially what is practical such as the Live Business Cases, class presentations, and workshops. Try to always question yourself. In the real business world, there will always be someone smarter than you are and that you can learn from. Take advantage of it, and never be afraid of expressing yourself. Be visible!

Winner of the STARTUP WEEKEND GRENOBLE 2012 From Laura Chagneux and Yasemin Erbil, MSc in Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship

Friday, the 16th November 2012 goes down in the history of two young and dynamic Master

in Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship students from Grenoble Ecole de Management: Laura Chagneux and Yasemin Erbil. They participated in an entrepreneurial challenge with a dream, open minds and a small idea that arose during a brainstorming session the very same day. Never could these two students have imagined going this far. They started with an observation and identified a pain point - lonely drivers in anonymous cities and pedestrians that go in the same direction and are in need of a lift. The solution: Pick Me Up, a mobile application that brings together car drivers and pedestrians, just in time, who are not only driving in the same direction, but also share common interests.

The startup weekend allows every student who has an idea to make a pitch of one minute and convince the audience. Then, the most promising projects are selected and teams are formed. The developer Will Barbour and ESC Finance student Maxime Damery joined the Pick Me Up Team with equal enthusiasm as Laura and Yasemin.

After winning the Startup Weekend Grenoble, the Pick Me Up Team qualified for the Global Startup Battle that requested a 90 second video about their project idea. After an exciting week of voting for the best worldwide startup idea, they ranked #42 among 112 projects with over 900 votes. With a lot of support from coaches, class mates, friends and family, the two girls and Will passionately continue to advance this project idea to a first prototype, work on the design and the project strategy. They recently changed the name from Pick Me Up to Kodicar. So join the Kodicar community: www.kodicar.com

Special thanks to the organization team of the Startup

Research on virtual collaboration: 5000 kms. apart, innovating together 600 students from Grenoble Graduate School of Business in France, Georgia Tech and George Mason University in the USA are working together on a project of co-developing a smartphone application regardless of the 5000 kms separating them, and not being acquainted. The aim: A research project identifying the optimal leadership and communication structures that will lead to innovation and to the successful management of virtual teams.

Participants are divided into three teams by discipline: Ecology, psychology and business, with the aim of jointly developing a smartphone application concept linked to sustainable development. The Ecology team, with the mission of examining the sustainable development issues, and Psychology team, which is examining the ways of changing attitudes towards sustainable development, are both based in the USA. In France, students from the Master in International Business (MIB) at Grenoble Graduate School of Business are part of the Business Team and must define a viable economic model for this smartphone application. The 600 participants use the virtual collaboration tool Webex to get together; share documents and ideas etc.

Barthélémy Chollet, research faculty at Grenoble Graduate School of Business explains: “The context in which we are conducting our research on virtual collaboration is very similar to that of a business context in which innovative projects come about. In the future, most of our students will be working in such an international context and will need to collaborate across disciplines. This project is a real added value to their training as it is not about studying a Case Study in a classroom but about experiencing real-life management and collaboration in contexts.” Students working on the project have experienced the issues linked with collaboration when geographically apart and when dealing with very different disciplines. They had to overcome the difficulties of time differences when trying to plan virtual meetings, professional terminology of each discipline, and the glitches and risks involved when using virtual communication tools.

Barthélémy Chollet concludes: “The benefits of this study are twofold: Virtual and multidisciplinary collaboration is rapidly developing in businesses and requires specific skills. It is essential for Grenoble Graduate School of Business to train future managers to appropriately address this. Furthermore, this experience is generating huge data which we can analyse to understand better what works and what doesn’t in virtual collaboration and in innovation processes, and offer clear guidelines for current managers dealing with such issues on a daily basis.” Video of the project available on the GEM website.

PROJECT FINANCE ELECTIVE

A new elective on “Project finance” will be taught in London by aproject finance professional (CFA charterholder, currently working in project Finance for Societe Generale). This course will be opened to MSc Finance students from all sites. So MSc Finance students will now have to choose between 5 electives: Financial management (covering cash management, bank negotiations and strategic performance control), IT tools for market finance (Financial modelling using VBA and Bloomberg trading), Islamic finance, Microfinance and Project finance. Project Finance is typically used to fund large greenfield projects such as building infrastructure in sectors including transport, energy, oil & gas, mining, telecommunications and public utilities. Unlike classic corporate lending where the ultimate credit rationale resides on the creditworthiness of the borrower, under Project Finance structures, lenders have recourse primarily to the revenue stream of the project or asset they are financing,

rather than to the balance sheet of the sponsor. This area of finance is developing at a fast pace as governmental funding of large infrastructure projects is reducing.

The New Marketing : social media, email and the art of the storytelling is a guide for navigating the transition from yesterday’s approaches to branding—where companies crafted brand messages and broadcasted them to the world—to new approaches for the age of email and social media, where branding has become an interactive cocreation with a user community. developments across the European Union, capturing the diffusion of the use of quotas from

Norway to Spain and France, and potentially more countries. Mark, Katia and Priya argue that

just the threat of quotas prompted action from many French companies to address the absence

of women in composition of their boards. However, the extent to which quotas open up access

to key decision making positions is less clear since non-executive positions are occupied more

frequently by women. Nevertheless the fact that the quota regulations have prompted some

change in company behaviour towards women in top management should on balance be

welcomed. And, with the European Commission recently publishing plans to implement

European-wide quota regulations, this issue is likely to remain a hot topic for researchers,

politicians and business leaders alike. The next step in their work is to further develop the comparison of the

experience of France with other countries. More information at

The GGSB placement survey The GGSB placement survey: recognition for your program and greater visibility of our talent pools for recruiters!

From Julie Perrin-Halot - Associate Dean/Director of Quality Centre QUID Grenoble Ecole de Management conducts systematic graduate surveys for all of its programs. These surveys are carried out over three years for each cohort following graduation. The results provide us with important information concerning employment conditions for the different graduating classes – sectors of activity, job titles, salaries, etc., and this over a period of three years for each cohort. The surveys also give us indications concerning job satisfaction and the feeling the graduates have about the pertinence of their degree for the job they currently occupy or its role in any career progression they may have made. The objective of this survey is tri-fold:

- One of the main advantages of this survey is that it allows us to verify that our program portfolio and content are coherent with the current job market. If the results show a “gap”, the school can put corrective actions into place to re-align with the demands of the professional world. - A second objective is to respond to the requirements for data of this type for the certifications/accreditations of our degrees by national and international organizations. This ensures that our degrees are recognized by our peers and by the proper authorities and it increases their value and visibility for recruiters. - Last, but not least, the surveys allow us to provide complete and accurate data to our press office as they manage relations with the national and international press responsible for business school rankings. So concretely speaking, in January/February during the three years following your graduation, you will be invited by mail to take a few minutes to complete the survey which then allows us to turn this action into a means of increasing both the quality of your program and the value of your degree.
