Valuable assets, precious emotions.

Fine gold is transformed into heart-stirring jewellery that looks good and feels good –

jewellery that is striking without being loud. This jewellery is freshly conceived, yet so

familiar that it seems to have existed forever. Jewellery BY KIM epitomises a universal

and unmistakable design language that is understood by women all over the world.

The perfect symbiosis of artistry and skill.

At the Wempe studio in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Kim-Eva Wempe has worked on a shared

vision with creative director, Catherine Plouchard, and a top-ranking team since 1999.

The results speak for themselves: magical jewels that keep pace with the spirit of the

times to become established international modern classics.

Formula for eternity.

Helioro owes its name to ‘Helios,’ the Greek sun god, and ‘oro,’ the Italian word for

gold – and as an embodiment of innovation, it cannot fail to impress. Manufactured by

a technically sophisticated process, Helioro BY KIM represents perfection of the golds-

mith‘s art. Its complex structure unites nine gold strands, apparently infinite sunbeams

creating a unique symbol of eternity.

In our hands, a jewel

becomes something unique.

Eternity, for instance.

Dear Readers,

Traveling was once a privilege enjoyed only by medieval adventurers, pilgrims

and merchants. The motives of these three groups could, however, not have

been more different: the pilgrims sought to expiate their sins by undertaking and

completing grueling journeys. The merchants, on the other hand, were primar-

ily interested in their destinations and the business deals that would compen-

sate them for the strains of traveling

there. The adventurers found mean-

ing in both approaches: thus, in the 13th century, Venetian

explorer Marco Polo described his goals in China with the

same passion as the perilous ways of getting there.

During the Enlightenment, travel became a matter of edu-

cation. Since then, being “widely traveled” has been a syn-

onym for being “well-educated.” At first, those who trav-

eled were mainly craftsmen in search of new techniques

and materials in other regions. Later on, Goethe, too, recog-

nized that the “best education for a clever person is found

in travel,” as the 18th century poet wrote in his popular

bildungsroman Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre.

In our time, technological progress finally established travel-

ing as one of society’s common activities. The less arduous

it became, the more urgently the question of its purpose in-

sinuated itself. Philosophers and literary greats have inter-

preted the whole of our existence as a journey. This may go some way to explaining why the long-

ing to “get to your destination” has increasingly become a point of interest: be that arriving at your

true self, or arriving in a place which provides tranquility, relaxation, space for reflection or happi-

ness. This is the reason why unique holiday properties surrounded by stunning landscapes – plac-

es for pausing and recharging your batteries – are more intensely sought after today than ever be-

fore. In a way, they represent attaining an objective. In this edition of GG, we will be introducing

you to the many ways you can arrive at this particular destination.

Sincerely

Christian Völkers

Playful Springtime!A few months ago the London auction house Bonhams came up with an unusual idea: they

asked some of the most famous architects of the 21st century to design a dollhouse for them.

Not knowing what to expect, the people at Bonham’s were stunned – everyone responded pos-

itively. A total of 20 inspired creations emerged and were subsequently auctioned off, with the

proceeds going to a charity that supports children in

need. The most paid-for design: the playhouse of Zaha

Hadid! The charm of a certain lightness of being also

surrounds India Hicks’ bohemian life. Born into the up-

per echelons of the British aristocracy – Prince Charles

is her godfather – she decided to move to a small is-

land in the Bahamas 18 years ago. Today, she has fi ve

children and works as a successful designer. The for-

mer model tells us what it is like to live in the exotic

“middle of nowhere,” starting on page 38. A new book

by Giancarlo Giammetti is a public declaration of love.

The long-time life and business partner of famous cou-

turier Valentino has enthusiastically dug through his

old photographs, and has now published many of them in a fond retrospective and homage.

Marrakech is exotic and full of sensuality. This is why we found the almost minimalist vaca-

tion home designed by architecture fi rm KO all the more unusual. They have created an en-

ergizing oasis of tranquility in the midst of chaos.

Island-look: The designs by India Hicks re-fl ect her life in the Bahamas. Whether it be the silk dress, a clutch with the octopus mo-tif or the necklace with the diamond encrust-ed hexagon, the objects created by the Briton exude a charming lightness.

The foodie DAVID LOFTUS

The photographer of our

cover story about India Hicks

(starting on page 38) not

only loves people & lifestyle

stories, fashion shoots, and

landscape photography: cook-

ing is the Briton’s great pas-

sion. In collaboration with ce-

lebrity chef Jamie Oliver, he

published Around the World

in 80 Dishes. Over the course

of his 20-year career, Loftus

has worked predominantly in

food photography, taken photographs for more than 100 books, and

has been awarded various accolades for his work.

The co-star GIANCARLO GIAMMETTI He has been Valentino’s right-

hand man for several decades.

Giammetti supported and

assisted the couturier, first as

his companion, later on as his

business partner. He has also

just published a book, which

gives a very personal insight

into the lives of the two ele-

gant Italians. Since the age of

20, Giammetti has been keep-

ing a diary, because although

his photos are beautiful, too

much was happening to remember it all, says Giammetti. More

about him and Valentino starting on page 58.

The fashionista SIEMS LUCKWALDT

For over ten years, the

Munich-based Hamburg na-

tive has been following, and

writing about, the fashion and

luxury industries. He has in-

terviewed many of the greats

in the fields of fashion, design

and entertainment, for ex-

ample Diane von Furstenberg,

Piero Lissoni and Amy Adams.

For GG, Siems Luckwaldt

spoke to Thierry Stern, Patek

Philippe’s president, about

the company’s 175th anniversary. More about precision technology,

watch features and rotor-winding mechanisms starting on p. 152.

The artist BRITTAN GOETZ

The lifestyle photographer

and art director is well known

for boldly executing her cre-

ative visions. This is the rea-

son why India Hicks, too,

has been putting her trust in

the American artist (page 38).

Hicks not only agreed

to be photographed by her,

but over the last three years,

the two have worked closely

on further developing Hicks’

lifestyle brand. For her part,

Brittan has a definite soft spot for vintage sofas and has had a

keen interest in art and portraiture since elementary school.

The expat VANESSA FUKUNAGA

Vanessa Fukunaga has fallen

in love with Mexico in gen-

eral and with life in Baja Cal-

ifornia in particular: the peo-

ple, the music, the culture

and the climate. This is why

the American, who is origi-

nally from Utah, has chosen

to live in Los Cabos, which is

a magnet for people from

around the world. We are in-

debted to this successful En-

gel & Völkers partner for the

For Sale story starting on page 72: “Casa Fryzer” is an exclusive

villa community located in Palmilla – heavenly!

The skipper NICOLE MIELKE

In the marketing team at Sun-

seeker, Nicole Mielke steered

many a ship safely into port.

Now, in her new position as

marketing manager, she

brings a fair wind to Engel &

Völkers’ Premium Marketing.

Nicole is the key contact for

GG advertorials. Before and

after work, it is her two

children that keep her busy.

When she manages to get

some “me time,” she is often

found on her sailboat or on the volleyball court. Sport is an abso-

lute must. Boredom is something Nicole never suffers from!

Mexico in the Fast LaneFolklore and superstition on one side, and high tech and a sense of change on the other: Mexico is booming. The emerging country is the second-largest economic power in Latin America after Brazil; it has a successful steel industry and is one of the ten biggest oil-producing nations worldwide. Mexico is also widely praised as a pioneer in environmentally sustainable technologies, and this image is, naturally, a boon for the tourism industry. Our tips? Turn the page....

Tradition and New Beginnings Mexico has many faces: ancient places of worship and pyramids, beguiling tropical beaches, small fishing villages, isolated deserts, millennia-old ruins and vast pine forests. Many of its tourist attractions have been declared UNESCO world heritage sites. The country is currently also experiencing a boom on a scale which had previously only been thought possible in the Far East. Mexico’s economy is booming. After years of stagnation, and in view of growth rates of around five percent, a sense of euphoria has been spreading. The New York Times has even talked about Mex-ico potentially outperforming China. Since Enrique Peña Nieto came to office in December 2012, the mood in Latin America’s second most important econ-omy has been one of joyous optimism.

This ties in with the energetic atmosphere in places all over the coun-try. In Tulum in the south of the Caribbean Yucatán peninsula, for example, you can experience a fusion of the old and the new Mexico, which packs quite a punch. Take the Coqui Coqui: a trendy hotspot unlike any of the other, traditional, hideaways. The owner of the ho-tel is Nicolas Malleville, who hails from Argentina. While studying landscape architecture in the city of Córdoba, he was asked by a mod-el scout whether he would like to be in a fashion shoot with Kate Moss. That was the beginning of his career as a top model for Burberry and Paul Smith – the rest is his-tory. In the sleepy Caribbean village of Tu-lum, which is famous for the only Mayan place of worship built on a shoreline, Mal-leville and his girlfriend bought an isolat-ed property a few years ago. Hundreds of palm trees grow in its white sands. Back then, Malleville must have seemed a little crazy to the locals – or “coqui coqui” as they say here. For example, for some of his New Year’s Eve parties, tents would be erected for his friends to stay in. What was origi-nally planned as a vacation home turned into Malleville’s first hotel. These days, his property empire includes a house in Méri-da; a villa on a remote beach near Tulum; a hotel in Cobá, close to the famous Ma-yan ruins; and an apartment building in Valladolid. Each building was designed in harmony with nature and with Mayan tradition. He hired craftsmen, who mas-tered traditional construction techniques and used local building materials. The wa-ter from the showers can occasionally taste salty, electricity is produced by solar panels and you have to make do without Internet access or air-conditioning. The rooms feature dark wooden furniture and coarsely plastered walls. Malleville wants his establishments to be natural, genuine and authentic.

That’s why here in Tulum, which used to be often compared to Goa, celebrities mingle – incognito – with musicians and he-donists, and so remain largely unrecognized. There is no dress

code, but Reiki therapists and Native American healers are much in demand. Their contact details are only passed on to a select few. “Gen-uineness, nature and authenticity,” Malleville has a real flair for find-ing the things in Mexico that are also loved by his friends. That is why he is a successful hotelier; his establishments are usually fully booked. Malleville also discovered his passion for perfumes, which is why all guests receive a special welcome gift: one of the creations from his perfume manufacture in the small town of Valladolid, where a handful of employees blend herbs and flower extracts.

On the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, is Los Cabos, whose tourist sea-son is between November and March. Las Ventanas al Paraíso is a

romantic resort located here. Its 70 suites have been designed in tra-ditional Mexican style, and feature patios and private pools, which overlook the ocean. After sunset, the fireplaces are lit, as it can get cold in the desert at night. Telescopes allow great views of the star-ry night skies. Your neighbors, a few miles further down the road, are the guests at the romantic One & Only Palmilla, among them Hugh Jackman and other movie greats, who wish to remain under-cover. The contrast with the bustling Cabo San Lucas, where college students love to drink tequila and Corona beers at the Cabo Wabo – owned and run by Van Halen rock star Sammy Hagar – could not be greater. Even in the restaurants at the marina, you can hardly get a table without a reservation. South American polo players and Califor-nia attorneys (many of whom have a second home in Los Cabos) enjoy ceviche here, a Mexican version of sushi.

Here on the Pacific coast the air is humid and sultry, which allows trees and plants to thrive. North of Acapulco lies Las Alamandas, a Shangri-La in the middle of a huge tropical

nature reserve, characterized by absolute privacy and its unspoiled plant and ani-mal life. Its host in the background is Isa-bel Goldsmith Patiño, daughter of British billionaire Sir James Goldsmith, and well known as a committed environmentalist and philanthropist. Bordering on her own estate and hidden between the groves of palm trees and the Pacific Ocean, is a hotel which consists of barely more than a dozen villas. Each of the only 16 furnished suites has been given an individual look, and has been lovingly designed with much atten-tion to detail. In order to remain faithful to the Mexican design tradition, Goldsmith Patiño employs time-honored folk art, lo-cal artifacts, terracotta flooring and Equi-pale chairs. Almost like in the Far East, chambermaids sprinkle petals on the beds, creating delightful images. During the summer months, Hawksbill sea tur-tles come to lay their eggs on the beach – an unforgettable experience.

We travel on, from the Caribbean to the cradle of Mexican culture in the high-lands. At 2,000 meters above sea level, the first few days of your visit to Mexico City

will feel a little like walking on clouds. The energy and joie-de-vivre of the people in the noisy, bustling markets, in the plazas bound-ed by laurel hedges, and in the trendy Polanco neighborhood is al-most palpable. Influential architects Enrique Norten and Bernardo Gómez Pimienta gave the metropolis its first design hotel worthy of that name: the Habita. With its glass frontages, it has quickly become a style icon for a young and creative clientele. Its rooftop bar is the meeting place in the Polanco neighborhood until the early hours of the morning. The St. Regis Mexico City is less than two years old and located in one of the city’s new landmarks: the 31-story Torre Liber-tad. The view from the spa’s infinity pool on the 15th floor is simply stunning: it extends over the sea of lights produced by Mexico City, which is home to 22 million inhabitants, all the way to Popocatépetl and its neighbors, a circular group of volcanoes.

Subtle flavors and new techniques, which draw on and complement traditional approaches, are the hallmark of the excellent cuisine at the Pujol restaurant. After the meal, a café de olla – coffee with cinnamon served in small earthenware cups – is a must. Has Mexico risen from a deep slumber? Hardly. It had never really been asleep. MW

Lattes anyone? Mexico is one of the world’s top ten coffee producing countries and its cafés, like this one in Veracruz, are popular meeting places.

THE CLOUD Hundreds of dangling white ropes make you feel weightless and as disconnected from gravity as if you were sitting on a cloud – rather than standing in the pavilion of the architects Hammer Lassen at the West Bund Biennial in Shanghai.

Lina Kanafani, have you sort of fulfi lled your life’s dream by owning

your own gallery? No, not at all. I have an MSc in biochemistry and nutritional sciences, and years ago I wrote a diet book which was a bestseller in the Middle East. I actually grew up in a very modern environment: through his work, my father had close ties to Sweden and so we had furniture which people nowadays describe as mid-

century classics. When I was studying in Beirut in the ’70s, all the important furniture brands had a presence there. And then in the ’80s, in London, I had trouble fi nd-ing certain items for my children and myself. So, I start-ed supplying accessories, nightclothes and bathrobes to large department stores. When I founded Mint in 1998, it was like a logical progression from my experiences. At fi rst it was more of a lifestyle store, but then I very quickly started exhibiting young designers, as well as interesting concepts and ideas which were new to London.Do the objects which you include in the gallery have

to be unique items or can they be part of small rang-

es? At Mint, we exhibit both. Sometimes we even mix in mass-produced objects, in order to demonstrate how well you can blend mainstream and individual designs. Who is your target group? Our customers are trend-setters. They are well informed about design and seek out new ideas. We have cornered an exciting niche in an expanding market.

Is the neighborhood of Brompton not almost too upmarket for a gal-

lery like Mint? Brompton is elegant, looks impressive and is very good for transportation. It is a blessing for us that we are in such close proximity to some of the large museums like the Victoria & Al-bert Museum, but perhaps even more importantly that we are close to the Royal College of Art, which is the global hub for design stud-ies. I fi nd that Brompton is the perfect area for a gallery like Mint, because there are large showrooms like Skandium, B&B Italia and Cassina just around the corner. The area also plays a leading role in the annual London Design Festival. Is it diffi cult to establish yourself as a gallery owner in London? Now-adays, it is extremely diffi cult, because you need enormous amounts of knowledge and experience. And that’s not even taking into ac-count the astronomically increasing rents. I wouldn’t advise any-one to open a gallery these days, especially because for econom-ic reasons, the industry will increasingly be using the Internet and other virtual avenues. Maybe having a temporary show is an easier option than a permanent location. Do pieces from the gallery also fi nd their way to your own home? Of course! My house is completely full up, and I’m really no lon-ger supposed to bring anything else home (unless a space needs radical remodeling), but I keep smuggling in some of the small-er pieces I love, because I have a weakness for ceramics, crock-ery and lights. So, it is almost inevitable that every now and again, a few of the objects fi nd their way to my home. UA

The Charm of Easy Island Living India Hicks is widely considered the reigning queen of bohemian life. The highly attractive daughter of one of England’s best aristocratic families was a bridesmaid for Lady Diana at age 13, and has spent the past 18 years living on a tiny little island in the Bahamas with her partner and their four children. Recently, the family was enlarged by the addition of 16-year-old Wesley, who the successful designer took in as a foster child after his mother died of breast cancer. India tells us about her unusual life in the tropics.

Iremember the fi rst time I was taken over to Harbour Island. I was four years old, the air was stuff y and I wanted to be on the beach. It was only with the promise of ice cream at the end of the drive that I would even consider getting in the car. Now, this tiny island, with a population of only 1500 locals, has been my permanent home for the past 18 years!

How did this come about? David, my better half, had been an old friend of my sister’s who came on holiday with us to the Bahamas. One year he discovered Har-bour Island. He saw an opportunity to live a life that was completely diff erent to the one he had in England. We gave up everything in England to start a new life on an island in the middle of nowhere.

This feeling of wanting to live a slightly unusual life is something we both share. Here I am free. I am not some-one’s god-daughter or daughter. I can simply be myself. As a young girl I spent many years working as a model. I came to it completely by chance, because what I actually wanted to do was study photography. Instead, I started modeling (editor’s note: Emilio Pucci discovered her and India Hicks became his model for catsuits). It was a wonderful time, because it took me around the world; I met extraordinary groups of creative people who I would never otherwise have met. When we moved to the tropics I felt the nature around me. My island life infl uenced me. I started draw-ing and sketching again. This resulted in my fi rst collab-oration with Crabtree & Evelyn, a perfume called “Island Life.” I wrote a coff ee-table book inspired by my life here.

Now, at this point in my life, I fi nd I am looking back as much as I am looking forward. I am recognizing the infl uence that my father, who was a great de-

signer, had on me. And also that being British is still very much a part of my life (laughs). It strikes me most when we celebrate Christmas on the island. Here, in the trop-ics, we always have a Christmas tree, a roast turkey and we stick to all the traditional customs. My fi ve children, Felix (16), Amory (14), Conrad (10), Domino (6) and our foster son Wesley, all grew up here but they weren’t born here. There is no hospital on Harbour Island, not even a regular doctor. I gave birth to all of my four children in Miami, fl y-ing over at the last moment and moving my life over there, with my books and dogs and cats. It’s mad, we really live a life like a traveling gypsy circus. I simply love having a large family. It was a terrible tragedy when Welsey’s moth-er died of breast cancer. I am grateful for having Wesley in our lives and we feel very blessed to have him as part of our family. For David and me it is important to bring our children up as global personalities. My children have grown up with an unusual mix and I sometimes ask my-self how they feel on the inside. Children who speak with that funny British accent even though they’re at home on

a tiny island in the middle of nowhere.

This sense of free-spiritedness that I felt inside me, a curiosity for a completely diff erent life, I think that came from my grandmother on my mother’s

side. She was an exceptional person and as a young wom-an often travelled to China and Japan before any other woman of her generation did. She was very intrepid, and my mother always said she slept with an atlas under her pillow. I simply couldn’t imagine living in a city anymore. Perhaps out in the countryside somewhere in England. Or up in the north of Scotland. But David, on the oth-er hand, could never live there. My better half needs the warmth of the tropics. For me it is important to be sur-rounded by Mother Nature. Although I do love the city and am always excited to go and visit and dash around in 5th gear mode, getting thousands of things done in a single day – that is very much my personality. Even if it’s diffi cult to imagine, I am just as technically plugged in here on Harbour Island as everybody else in a big city. These sensational developments like social media – with-out them I would never be able to supervise all my proj-ects. The other night I was training for a bike ride we or-ganize to raise breast cancer awareness and the fi refl ies were the only lights guiding my way. Those are the mo-ments I know why I live here. And it’s fantastic – you can even see me enjoying the moment (#Indiahicksstyle).

A typical day here? Well, for me it starts really early in the morning. I always seem to get up fi rst, usually at around 6:30 am. Then I wake Domino and we have breakfast to-gether. We jump in the golf cart and I drive her to school, which is fun; the only traffi c we encounter on our way are the chickens fl apping across the road as we pass. At school Domino sits outside, under the open sky on a wood-en bench, with a Bahamian friend on one side and a Ger-man girl on the other. I carry on to my small offi ce where I supervise my HSN Home Shopping bedding collection and my jewelry collection. When that’s done, I pop into the small shop I run on the island, and spend a part of the day seeing what is happening there. This is a nice creative contrast to just sitting at the offi ce in front of the comput-er all day. In the afternoon or early evening, when Domino is back home again and is busy with her homework, I grab all our dogs, most of which have come to us as strays over the years, and take them down to the beach for a good run. For me, this is always the best end to a perfect day. MC

ome people collect stamps; others, works of art or cars. Pascal Euvrard collects properties. The found-er of Europe’s leading online tour operator special-izing in cruises, QCNS Cruise, owns properties in Monaco, Switzerland, France and Morocco. “I would

have loved to be an architect,” says Pascal Euvrard. To him, building houses is more important than owning them. However, having sold his compa-ny despite only being in his 40s, Euvrard now has

more time to spend with family and friends, and in his second and third homes. So, these days, he keeps most of the buildings for himself. “I am really attached to each and every one of them,” says the would-be architect, laughing as he stands on the pa-tio of the most recent addition to his collection, which has only just been completed in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. “I had al-ready renovated a traditional riad in Marrakech’s historical Medina district, but was excited by the idea of creating a new building out-side the city: without any neighbors within a radius of at least ten kilometers, and with a vegetable garden and free-range chickens!”

He found an unspoiled plot of land, just under an hour’s drive from downtown Marrakech. A jeep is absolutely essential for making it up the last few kilometers of the dirt road, which twists and turns as it climbs up to an altitude of 1,000 meters. There, at the top of the mountain, behind a massive cedar wood gate is a fortress-like com-plex, a red brick building that blends into the landscape so harmo-niously that it seems as though it has always been there. Only the anthracite-colored pool and the helipad on the edge of the six-hect-are property jar with its timeless appearance. The panoramic view is stunning, but is by no means a saccharine picture-postcard mo-tif. The landscape is rugged: 360 degrees of jagged cliffs and rolling green hills covered in pine forests and maquis shrubland. Not a build-ing to be seen, not a human voice or car horn to be heard. Only the constant twitter of birdsong. Looking to the west, the white peak of Mount Toubka gleams in the distance. The highest peak in the Atlas Mountains is snow-covered even in the summer, and in the winter, snow often falls as low down the slopes as 1,000 meters.

Building a contemporary villa with all modern comforts in this un-tamed, isolated area, without electricity or roads suitable for trucks or

large construction machinery, seems akin to the labors of Sisyphus. “Well, the brick walls alone measure 5,000 square meters,” says Pascal Euvrard further underlining the difficult and ostensibly never-ending nature of the task. Architecture firm KO, however, made the seem-ingly impossible, possible. Paris-based architects Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty opened their Marrakech office in 2001, and already had experience in constructing new buildings in difficult terrain. This is because the latest local trend is getting out of the hectic Medina neigh-borhood and heading for the hills, in the general direction of the At-las Mountains. KO Architects always take care to create a harmonious fusion with the local environment to preserve the unspoiled country-side. “Their modern interpretation of traditional Moroccan architec-ture just won me over,” says the property owner.

For the roughly 1,000 square-meter living area, Euvrard did not want “Moroccan folklore,” but rather Western dimensions, rooms which are not overloaded, a spacious kitchen, seven bedrooms, sev-en bathrooms, a drawing room and a television room. The proper-ty’s generators supply electricity; rainwater is purified for domestic use. Heat pumps and 15 fireplaces supply hot water and a comfort-

able ambient temperature. Only the bathrooms resemble hamams. The KO team designed almost all the custom-made features on-site. The dining room table is a masterpiece in magnificent walnut wood. Its shape continues the irregular shapes of the slate floor tiles, so that the up to 24 guests that can be seated around its angular sides do not just “sit in a boring line, like pearls on a string.”

Traditional craftsmanship and local materials were crucial for the success of the project. Mules carried the red bricks for the walls from the nearby Ourika Valley to the top of the mountain. The dark-gray slate floor tiles outside the building have been left unprocessed, while the tiles inside the building were carefully finished with oil. This lo-cal approach was also aided by a “fortunate coincidence” says Pascal Euvrard. A few kilometers from the property, and roughly 100 me-ters below it in altitude, lies a small Berber village. For centuries, the community had made its living from exploiting the nearby salt mine, until they had exhausted its reserves. But the village was also home to extraordinarily gifted craftsmen. This happy coincidence created a win-win situation for both parties: the vast majority of the 40 con-struction workers who built the complex came from there. EMM

Now Giancarlo Giammetti, the fashion

designer’s former life partner and managing

director of the fashion house, has published an annotated illustrated book about his 50 glamorous years at Valentino’s side.

The 20th century was the era of the coutu-riers, genius tailors who invented glamour and dressed their select clientele magnifi -cently. But of all the couturiers, it was only Valentino who managed the feat of also in-habiting the dazzling world he created, and of living a jet-set lifestyle. When he cele-brated his departure from the fashion in-dustry with regal grandeur at the Villa Bor-ghese in July 2007, we, the assembled press,

chatted to Uma Thurman at the bar, mingled with Princess Car-oline of Hanover, Claire Danes und Sarah Jessica Parker on the patio, and strolled through the moonlit park in Mick Jagger’s en-tourage. As we did so, we got an in-kling of what people meant when they talked about the legendary “Valentino Clan.” It is thanks to Giancarlo Giammetti that, despite his workload, the couturier found the time to cultivate friendships, to travel and to attend celebra-tions, dinners and Oscar parties. Because of his love and admira-tion for Valentino’s genius, Giam-metti came to terms with the end of their twelve-year relationship and stayed faithful to the fashion house for 50 years as its managing director. In all this time, the two men enjoyed a friendship, which was strengthened not only by a shared concern for the brand they had created together, but also by a shared circle of friends. Giammet-ti has now published a retrospec-tive of his life, which includes an abundance of photographs he took himself. It documents, for the fi rst time, the extent to which Valentino managed to gath-er around him muses and models, music and movie stars, and mem-bers of the European aristocracy.

It all began in 1960 on the Via Veneto in Rome, in the crowd-ed Café de Paris, when Valentino asked to sit down at Giam-metti’s table. Back then the trendy boulevard was awash with

international actors working at the Cinecittà, and with paparazzi. Snapshots sneakily taken by photographers from a passing Ves-pa were tolerated. Seeing and being seen was a pastime that the whole city indulged in, including Giammetti who had dropped out of his architecture degree. “I have always thought that my life started when I met Valentino.” As the fashion designer’s right-hand man, Giammetti not only discovered his talent for business, but also created a second, private Via Veneto – with himself in the role of the paparazzo. When Valentino spent the evening with Jackie Onassis in Capri, or when Lady Diana or Claudia Schiff er dived into the sea from Valentino’s yacht TM Blue One, Giammet-ti would be there to press the shutter release. And when Elizabeth Hurley, Hugh Grant, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosario Saxe-Coburg and Elle Macpherson sweltered in the Caribbean sun, he would pho-tograph them from the upper deck. Using the yacht as their base,

Valentino and Giammetti would spend their summers in Tangier, Rio, Bali, Delos or Phuket, always surrounded by beautiful people, who looked stunning in every shot. “I call them our tribe, because where Valentino and I go, they all follow.”

Those who were invited to their chateau in Gstaad, to their Tus-can country home in Cetona or to Valentino’s Roman palace, could count on making exciting acquaintances there – and literally ev-erybody came. Cat Stevens, Liz Taylor and Rudolf Nureyev stayed over when attending Rome Fashion Week. Madonna, Princess Mette-Marit, the young Dutch royal couple and Denise von Thys-sen have all relaxed with their children in the park of his Widev-ille home. Aretha Franklin, Placido Domingo and Bette Midler serenaded Valentino at a gala birthday dinner in his honor in New

York. Andy Warhol repaid the favor with a party at the Fac-tory, and the long-serving edi-tor-in-chief of US Vogue, Diana Vreeland, hosted a dinner with Barbra Streisand for her Italian guests. Luchino Visconti once asked the couturier to keep an eye on his lover Helmut Berg-er. But the latter immediately started an aff air with someone in Valentino’s entourage, Marisa Berenson. “What can I say,” says Giammetti. “It was the 1970s….”

When perusing Private you get the impres-sion that Valentino

turned the traditional relation-ship of a tailor working for pow-erful clients on its head, be-cause it was he who opened up doors for his customers. When Gwyneth Paltrow confessed to him that she had no plans for her thirtieth birthday over dinner, he suggested celebrat-ing it in his country home. Of

course, she and her friend Stella McCartney were also there when Giammetti moved his own birth-

day celebrations to snow-covered St. Petersburg. Even philanthrop-ic socialites like Lynn Wyatt, Nan Kempner and Brooke Astor were delighted to be invited on skiing trips or cruises by their coutu-rier. There is no doubt that Valentino “collected” celebrities. He was particularly fond of supermodels and the aristocracy, but what he loved most of all were spectacular weddings. Elizabeth Hur-ley’s wedding in India, Marisa Berenson’s in California and Da-vid Bowie’s nuptials with Iman were always also a celebration of the genius behind the wedding dress. When Anne Hathaway tried on her dress in Giammetti’s New York apartment in 2012, he had his camera ready. You almost feel the tears in the eyes of the bride as she looked in the mirror. Giammetti does not gloss over the crises, which sometimes played out behind the scenes, and often in public: Liz Taylor forcing her entourage to get on their knees to look for a diamond ring on the fl oor, or Lauren Hutton’s tan-trum when she was not seated next to a friend. But those are yes-terday’s dramas. What remains for Giammetti and Valentino is the lifestyle they created, a lifestyle that is utterly unique. IH

Normally, you’d find them in the nursery, their furnishings probed by tiny fingers and their inhabitants propped up at the minia-ture dining table in front of plaster hams. Dollhouses, those perennial favorites of little girls, are not something most people would associate with cutting-edge design. But even famous designers and architects like to play with what a miniature house could look like. Naturally, dollhouses by

Zaha Hadid, David Adjaye or Wayne Hemingway are not so much about making a child’s dream come true or living out their own childhood memories. The dollhouses they and other big-name ar-chitects and designers came up with were intended for charity, and in Britain good causes are guaranteed to generate amaz-ing projects and attract high- carat contributors.

Twenty dollhouses designed by some of the most creative minds in the British Isles were presented at the London Design Festival in September 2013. The project “A Dolls’ House,” which was initiated by the Cathedral Group prop-erty developers, culminated last November when the mod-els were sold at an auction or-ganized by Bonhams. The sale raised around 103,000 euros for the charity KIDS, which supports disabled chil-dren and their families. The highest price, and this will come as no surprise, was paid for Zaha Hadid’s house called “This must be the place,” which went for almost 17,000 euros. The anonymous bid-der is now the proud owner of a bespoke house designed by a Pritzker prizewinner. The second-highest bid (just over 13,000 euros), went to the design by architects Lifschutz Da-vidson Sandilands, a London-based firm that also designed the new headquarters for Bonhams in London’s New Bond Street. In third place, and attracting a winning bid of almost 12,000 euros, was the “Tower of Fable” by FAT Architecture and Grayson Perry.

The British have a remarkable affection for dollhouses: The big-gest dollhouse in the world, Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, is on display in the public chambers of Windsor Castle. It was built for

the queen by 1,500 craftsmen and was exhibited in 1924 at the British Empire Exhibition in Wembley. Edward Lutyens, one of the great Brit-ish architects of the 20th century and the person largely responsible for the layout of New Delhi, designed it. The four-story Palladian vil-la, built to a scale of 1:12, was naturally never intended to actually be played with. It was a demonstration of the very best of British design and craftsmanship at the time. Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House was what inspired the initiators of the current project to create dollhouses for the 21st century. All of the architects were encouraged to collaborate with designers, artists and furniture makers to demonstrate British skills and creativity. The results are appropriately original, pragmatic,

weird, witty and aesthetically pleasing. The builders must have thor-oughly enjoyed themselves and had fun incorporating a number of quirky ideas which would have been unthinkable in any professional project. For instance, the dollhouse designed by Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan consists of boxes stacked one on top of the other, their sides wallpapered with brightly hued, clashing patterns. The bot-tom box rests on sprigs of coral; the next floor has palm trees grow-ing on it, while the top box boasts a colorful cluster of trees, wind tur-bines, a nesting box and a pirate’s flag. The London company Amodels, which is renowned for its unusual architecture models, planted a tree on a painted orange board and glued a plane to a branch. Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, AHMM for short, from Clerkenwell scaled one of their own real-life designs down to dollhouse size. And Zaha Hadid’s eye-catching model is a wooden puzzle with curved openings and

voids around a crystalline, Plexiglas center.

As for the design brief, the dollhouses were supposed to fit on a

75 by 75 cm plinth and in-clude at least one feature that would make life easier for a disabled child. These features, a little like the ac-tual function of the house as a real, albeit miniaturized space to live in, are not always immediately obvious at first glance. However, what the new owners have purchased are undoubtedly unique piec-es: models that will have the status of collector’s items, thus firmly embedding them in the centuries-old tradition of dollhouses.

The history of the minia-ture houses in Europe goes back as far as the 16th centu-ry. The earliest known doll-house was made in 1558 for Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria; it was, of course, not intend-ed as a toy, but was, instead,

a sumptuous work of art to be displayed and admired. In the 17th and 18th centuries, prosperous patrician families in Nuremberg and Augsburg adopted this idea and had miniature versions of their own houses built by master craftsmen to demonstrate their wealth. These houses were used solely as presentation objects for adults and edu-cational models for children. It wasn’t until the Biedermeier period that dollhouses were made specifically for little girls in order to pre-pare them for their future role in life as a housewife. These hous-es were replicas of the apartments of the upper middle classes, and they were designed to be as realistic as possible. In the first third of the 19th century, individual rooms also started becoming popular as toys, most frequently drawing rooms or kitchens, the latter fully equipped with all the necessary accoutrements. In Germany it was customary to set up the dollhouse after the gifts had been distribut-ed on Christmas Eve and leave it out until Twelfth Day, after which it would be packed up and stored in the attic until the next Christ-mas. It can only be hoped that these wonderfully unrealistic 21st cen-tury dollhouses with their folding, collapsing, sliding and stackable elements will not suffer a similar fate. UA

Matthew Girling, CEO Europe and jewelry expert at Bonhams, presided over the dollhouse auction. “Auctions are a serious business,” he

says, “but as an auctioneer you are allowed to put on a performance.”

Expansive outdoor terraces, softly illuminated in the evenings, are surrounded by palm trees and fra-grant flora. The massive infinity pool, with an elevated edgeless Ja-cuzzi, affords an awe-inspiring view that blends into the sapphire sea. Large umbrellas are dotted around the terrace, poised to offer shelter from the intense Baja Cali-fornian sun. A giant flatscreen TV creates an exhilarating open-air cinema viewing experience. Yet an-other highlight: a small bridge con-nects the main terrace with a cir-cular lounge island that seems to float in the middle of the pool. Everywhere one looks, the eye is spoilt with magnificent outlooks overlooking the azure-blue ocean.

Viva Los CabosWhere the Pacifi c Ocean meets the Gulf of California, and the days are as lively as the nights, an idyllic paradise is infused with a distinctively glamorous Mexican vibe: Los Cabos! This southernmost tip of Baja Caifornia in Mexico hosts the two towns of Cabo San Lucas, vibrant and fun-loving, and San José del Cabo, more tranquil and traditional. Connecting the two is a 33-kilometre-long stretch of coast, the so-called “Cor-ridor”, with its string of luxury hotels and golf courses, offering endless scope for relaxation and leisure.

NATURE A sublime natural setting amidst mountains, sea and desert. An absolute must-see: the landmark of Los Cabos – El Arco, also referred to as Land’s End – is a truly impressive rock formation that resembles a drinking dragon when seen from the side. For adventurers: hikes through the canyons and desert trips are particularly magnifi cent. For nature lovers: mangrove forests and the fresh-water lagoon of San José del Cabo, a wetland habitat for countless species of exotic birds.

But Los Cabos also offers the perfect conditions for countless water sports like snorkelling, surfi ng, sport fi shing, waterskiing, jet-skiing and many more.

NIGHTLIFE The bustling town of Cabo San Lucas is particularly well known for its exhilarating nightlife. There is an endless choice of bars, cafés, restaurants and night-clubs on offer, guaranteeing exquisite even-ings out. It makes the perfect setting in which to savour both the best of international gas-tronomy and fi ne Mexican cuisine.

Casa Fryzer”, which all began with a single sketch

on a paper serviette, is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular properties in Villas del Mar within the exclusive master-planned communi-ty of Palmilla. Enjoying no less than 350 days of sunshine each year, the region is not only capti-vating in terms of its picturesque scenery – high mountain ranges, barren desert landscapes, white sandy beaches and the endless sapphire sea. Los Cabos is also a veritable epicentre for

professional golf, a dream location for divers, surfers and avid fans of sport fishing, as well as a hotspot for glamorous nightlife. All of this makes Los Cabos one of the most desirable travel destinations in Mexico today. Magnificently perched atop a lofty mountain, this dream residence is filled with bespoke architectural details and a high level of comfort. This includes a wine cellar, a private gym and a stylish-ly finished home cinema with fine leather seating. Many of the decorative elements and choice of special materials have been modelled in the style of a hacienda or tradi-tional Spanish country house. “The owner has a soft spot for curves and water,” con-fesses the native Californian architect. Together with his partner, the architect Brad Gwinn, he translated his cli-ent’s twin passions into the very first drawings and then presented them to his client on a simple paper napkin. “We came up with the origi-nal central idea for the prop-erty over the course of one single evening,” the client and architects both agree.

This property is all about the flowing transitions between the in-

side and the outside. The architects wanted air, water and the warmth of Mexico to be in constant circulation with another.

Whilst the luxury villa offers glorious views of Los Cabos and far be-yond, its planners were keen to create a seamless transition between the inner and outer living areas: the spectacular mountain backdrop not only becomes a key aspect of the outdoor scenery, but shady court-yards and sun terraces also blend into one. Likewise, the edgeless in-finity pool seems to flow straight into the azure-blue sea. Even the transitions between interiors and the spacious grounds are seamless. Glass doors as well as frameless design constructions help to empha-sise this beautiful fluidity and sense of continuity, merging all bound-aries. “Architecture is more than a positive material form. It can take your breath away, increase your heartbeat or calm your nerves,” Sin-clair believes. Both architects were extremely keen to create spaces in this home that move people and touch their souls, spaces that awaken emotions or stimulate feelings: serenity, tranquillity, warmth or joy. Their architecture is also about a balance between light and darkness, two qualities that they regard as their most fundamental tools. The

residence’s spectacular interior design exudes a nostalgic, almost in-toxicating atmosphere in the style of old Hollywood glamour – yet is simultaneously a blend of art deco, Asian motifs and a splash of Euro chic. The decorative, star-shaped coffered ceiling in the living room with a cascading chandelier, the intricately patterned marble floor, the high-gloss wooden dining table or the illuminated vaulted ceiling in the dining room – the harmonious variety of different elements creates a truly inimitable living environment. A further highlight is the bar. With its marble counter, luxurious leather stools and mirrored wall el-ements reflecting rows of cocktail glasses, the bar resembles a trendy nightclub. Naturally, the in-house bartender is always at your service.

Each of the bedroom suites has a unique character all of its

own. While one is kept very contemporary, light and airy, another is imbued with a playful or elegant flair. Each of

the bathrooms in “Casa Fry-zer” also has its very own flair, and all come equipped with the joys of a Jacuzzi, ornate tiling and illuminat-ed features. The majority of the rooms are connected by floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, creating seamless transitions once again be-tween the interior and exte-rior spaces. The architectual duo is particularly proud of the dining area which they integrated into the pool area in the grounds to incredible effect. “The outdoor dining room that is sunken into the pool area is a truly spectacu-lar feature of this residence,” says Brad Gwinn. The sen-sational stone table, which is no less than three metres in diameter, can easily sit up to 20 guests. The open fire pit

and a particular architectural highlight – a tabletop that is absolutely flush with the water surface – promises to make a popular, atmos-pheric venue that is guaranteed to delight dinner guests, time and time again. More often than not, this unique setting turns out to be the very place where guests would most like to retire for the re-mainder of the evening, after enjoying a sumptuous formal dinner in the property’s indoor dining room.

“Creative phases are a form of meditation,” believes Sinc-lair. “You need an absolute sense of clarity to sound out the qua-lities that are good for the soul.” The architects’ offices are located in Los Angeles and Newport Beach, two places with an en- ergy that forms a source of inspiration for them. “Sometimes I simply walk to the UCLA campus or the beach nearby. Taking a walk is often more productive than sitting at your desk,” confesses the architect. “In a house such as this one, the relationship between inside and out-side works in perfect symbiosis. When all of the sliding glass doors are open, the energy of the house seems to flow from one end right through to the other. The views overlooking Los Cabos, the bay and the endless ocean, as well as the warmth or the cool evening breeze, connect each and every room with one another.” MK

Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors create fluid transitions between the interior and exterior of the house, whilst expansive terraces

offer truly spectacular views of Los Cabos and its environs.

Ideally located near the town of Poessneck in the German state of Thuringia, only half an hour from the main regional town of Jena, Schloss Nimritz is an absolute jewel just waiting to be discovered. The impressive estate comprises a Renaissance castle designed by

Count von Etzdorf between 1565 and 1569, and a newer building, the so-called “Neues Schloss”, built in a baroque style. With its magnifi -cent knights’ hall, late-Gothic wooden beam ceilings and original wall

fi nishes, it is as though this castle has been left to lie in a deep slum-ber for centuries. Owned by the von Beust aristocratic line until 1945, it underwent painstaking and intricate modernisation work several years ago. It now stands resplendent with 15 rooms that ooze grandeur and prestige, and a beautiful private park. Schloss Nimritz could be used for a variety of diff erent purposes – for example, as a sensational private home or as distinguished company headquarters.

As well as being close to urban life, the property also offers an exceptional level of privacy that even international artists have come to know and love. On the slopes of Crevole’s Castle, 15 minutes from Siena and from Montalcino, lies a small medieval village, which is home to this

ancient deconsecrated church first dedicated to St. Cecilia. With an interior of more than 400 sqm and 1,000 sqm of paved outdoor spaces, there is a sauna, a cellar carved into the rock and a garden with a pool and small tennis court. This is a charming and untarnished place, first

contended by Etruscans and Romans and later by popes and emperors. Pope Pio II Piccolomini’s emblem and a painting by Duccio di Bonin-segna entitled “Madonna of Crevole” are testimony to this. The location offers endless possibilities for history and nature lovers, approx. 40 km from the mountains and the sea, and just minutes from sulphur baths, Brunello vineyards, horseback riding and a renowned golf club.

Originally built as an administrative building in 1862 whilst still under the reign of the King of Denmark, this property exudes

the style of a Danish aristocratic home. After 1882, once the Duchy of Lauenburg had fallen into Prussian hands, it served as the official and private residence of Prussian royal commissioners. The house is situated on the ‘Wedenberg’ overlooking the Ratzeburg lake. Its usage as

a senior citizens’ residence saw extensive modernisation of the technical fittings in 1999 along with the installation of an elevator for eight people. It is currently divided into nine units and would be suitable for a variety of usages for families, self-employed individuals and/or as a prestigious company headquarters. harmonious fusion of the old structure with high-quality contemporary materials has been created here to stunning effect. The outbuilding provides an additional space of approx. 135 sqm and comprises a very tastefully designed three-room apartment with a guest WC. An outdoor pool that blends in superbly with its surroundings, an impressive wine cellar and other surprising details round off this exceptional dwelling.

This house was built in 1968 and completely modernised in 2002/2004 to the highest standards. It is impressive for its purist modern

architecture and park-like plot, which occupies a prime position concealed from outside view. The sense of spaciousness and exclusivity throughout is owed to the generously sized layout, the height of the ceilings that soar to three metres and the quality materials used. A distinctly timeless

theme runs through each of the five carefully conceived interiors. Large windows and exposed steel columns and girders create a commodious and lightflooded ambience. Nature outdoors and space indoors fuse with one another, all surrounded by a landscape conservation area. This is the ideal home for nature lovers, riding enthusiasts and people with discerning tastes. It is rounded off with an exclusive spa and integrated double garage.

Behind the intricate, symmetrical façade of ‘Burg Kommern’, which was erected in 1884, lies the yet more historic fabric of the building,

consisting of a baroque stately residence dating from around 1753 and a residential tower dating as far back as the Medieval period. Still preserved in all its glory to this day, the adjoining private country park boasts a wonderful summerhouse and guarantees absolute peace and

privacy from the outside world. Whilst the basic structure of the main residence and estate outbuildings is in good overall condition, some of the interiors no longer live up to modern living standards and are in need of renovation. This magnificent estate is located in a district of the town of Mechernich. Due to the direct connection to the A1 federal motorway, the cities of Cologne and Bonn are only approximately 30 minutes away.

These wonderfully landscaped garden grounds form one of the few land plots in the upmarket neighbourhood of Alt-Meererbusch that

still retain their original size and stature. Perfectly positioned with a southwest-facing orientation, the garden borders onto woodland and appears as though it is sheer unending parkland. Various seating areas and an outdoor pool make a splendid setting in which to enjoy fine

summer days outdoors. The property was built in 1957 to a solid cons-truction, refurbished in 1996 and 2010 and maintained on an ongoing basis over the years, meaning that it now presents itself in an immacu-late, like-new condition both from an aesthetic and technical point of view. Extremely high-quality materials have been used throughout and skilfully combined with classic period features from centuries gone by.

Tradition meets InnovationIn 2014, the Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe celebrates its 175th anniversary. A family-owned company, it has been designing, developing and making watches since 1839. Many of these are amongst the most sophisticated, sought-after and expensive timepieces available. In 2001, several of the company’s departments relocated to new premises in the Geneva suburb of Plan-les-Ouates (above). The old Art Deco building in the city center now houses the Patek Philippe Museum and its valuable collection of rare timepieces.

Calibrated Perfection Watchmaker Patek Philippe celebrates its 175th birthday in 2014. The company has remained true to its heritage of highly complex timepieces, as a recent exhibition in Munich impressively showed. Tradition in action: Philippe and Thierry Stern, Patek Philippe’s owners in the third and fourth generation, and the official company seal.

Its name is legendary among con-noisseurs. Patek Philippe has al-ways designed and built its own, elaborately decorated and embel-lished clockworks in its workshops in Geneva. They are handmade, and ticking away in exceedingly desirable watchcases. Customers sometimes have to wait years for particularly high-end models. The sophisticated development work, production and precise mecha-nisms of the watches come with a price tag – even many years after their launch. Especially rare vin-tage models regularly fetch record prices at auction. In 2009, Thierry Stern took over as company presi-dent from his father Philippe, and so became the fourth generation to run the family business.

Last fall, Thierry Stern, President of watch manufacturer Patek Philippe, hosted what was probably the most successful exhibition of timepieces in the last few years. For more than two weeks the “Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung” art gallery in Munich was the well-secured home of more than 430 exhibits. Among the highlights were the master watchmakers, engravers and enam-el painters, who gave an insight into their

magical, intricate skills deployed at the smallest of scales. Further highlights included the antique and cutting-edge exhibits: among them a box-shaped pocket watch from the 1530s and a 1924 Patek pocket watch with a tourbillon.

Another highpoint was the sparkling quartz crystal model from the “Twen-ty-4” ladies’ range, adorned with over 720 diamonds weighing a total of 36.3 carats. Plus, the legendary Star Caliber 2000: a unique pocket watch with a dou-ble-sided clock face, which includes the most beautiful depiction of the phases of the moon ever made. This masterpiece also boasts 21 features, such as a per-petual calendar and a melodious West-minster chime, making it the third most complex watch in the world. The num-ber one and two spots are, of course, also held by Patek Philippe watches. Also on show in Munich were current models from the Travel Time, Calatrava, Gondo-lo, Nautilus and Aquanaut ranges, some of which were luxurious special editions.

Thierry Stern’s opening address was given in a mix of German and French, delivered with charming Swiss under-statement, despite a company turnover of approximately 774 million euros in 2012. But patting himself on the back publically really isn’t Stern’s style. Rath-er, he reminisced about his first vis-it to the newly constructed company headquarters in Geneva in 1996. “Standing in the shell of the build-ing with my father, in the place where we would soon be working with 1,600 of our colleagues, was an unforgettable experience for me. It was the beginning of a new era.”

Stern lives five minutes from the company HQ, together with his two sons and his wife Sandrine, the brand’s creative director and herself the daughter of a jeweler. His family not only pro-

vides support, they also supply first-hand market research data: “Al-though 65 percent of our sales are men’s watches, we know that wom-en have a large say in the purchasing decisions of their husbands,” Stern explains. Watch No. 5200, launched at this year’s Baselworld trade fair, gives an insight into the details the watchmakers at Patek Philippe work on. Despite the energy intensive calendar, which dis-plays the date and day of the week, the watch has a power reserve of eight days. This is made possible through the interplay of twin main-spring barrels and the oil-free Silinvar® escapement, developed by Patek. These features ensure that there is hardly any friction. Small dimensions and a four-Hertz frequency further distinguish this timepiece, which has been hailed as “revolutionary” among experts.

On May 1st, 1839, the Polish immigrant and merchant Antoine Norbert Count de Patek and watchmaker François Czapek found-

ed the company Patek, Czapek & Cie in Geneva. Czapek later struck out on his own, leaving Patek’s new business partner Jean-Adrien Philippe to contribute the second part of the company’s current name. By inventing the winding crown, the two watchmakers ren-dered previously required watch keys obsolete. In 1932 the compa-ny was acquired by Geneva-based watch dial manufacturers Charles and Jean Stern. Since that time, the family has owned Patek Philippe S.A. – and currently does so in the fourth generation. The compa-ny launched the first watch with an automatic rotor winding mech-anism in 1953. It also holds a further 80 patents and developed the Caliber 89, the world’s most complex pocket watch to date, which boasts 33 features and 1,728 parts, as well as the Sky Moon Tourbil-lon Ref. 5002, with its price tag of 700,000 euros.

While many competitors were forced to take a break at some point, Patek Philippe re-

mained active, as the independent man-ufacturer of the “Komplikationen“ and “Grandes Complications” ranges, for ex-ample. Selling the company to an inter-national conglomerate like Richemont or the Swatch Group is out of the ques-tion for Patek’s president Thierry Stern, who took over the business from his fa-ther and Patek’s honorary president Philippe Stern in 2009. “Once a year, someone will approach us with an of-fer. I then politely say ‘No, thank you,’ and that’s the end of that.” The freedom to be able to think long-term, and not to have to compromise on quality for the sake of shareholder value, is extremely important to Thierry Stern.

Conservatively, in the original sense of the word, is also how the Sterns con-duct their business activities in the Far East. The brand refrained from engag-ing in any hype in China, unlike many of its euphoric competitors who at-tempted a risky entry into that desir-able, booming market. At Patek, people stayed calm. “For me the greatest luxu-

ry is the service which we offer our clients for the whole lifespan of the watch,” emphasizes the 43-year-old during our conversation. So, instead of hastily erecting one boutique after another in China, the company opened the Maison Patek Philippe in Shanghai in 2012, a subsidiary, which is on par with the Salon Patek Philippe in Gene-va. This was followed by a service center with 30 employees and the Patek Philippe Institute Shanghai, which is dedicated to training ju-nior watchmakers. The students, whose diligence assuages the in-dustry’s worries about finding young talent, complete a total of 3,550 hours of training on a two-year course

Thierry Stern does not (yet) worry about whether his sons, who are ten and twelve years old, will one day follow him into the family busi-ness. Even the all-pervasive digitalization of our lives does not cause him sleepless nights. Does he think watches with automatic clock-works, hundreds of small cogs, engravings and highly sophisticated intricacies are perhaps becoming anachronistic? Stern responds with a family anecdote: “A few years ago, one of my sons pointed at the clock on my desk and said: ‘Daddy, where do you plug in the charger?’ I told him: ‘That’s the great thing about it – it doesn’t need electrici-ty.’ In that moment I knew that watches, like the ones made at Patek Philippe, will be around for a very long time.” SL

For Sandrine Stern, Patek’s Head of Creative, the per-fect watch has “discrete elegance, flawless workman-

ship and technology, aesthetic appeal and beauty.”

Art Jean-Charles de Castelba-jac is a bril-liant artist. At the pre-sentation of

his collection he painted this canvas

dress in real time. Burak Uyan’s shoe is also a piece of art.

Nomen est omen: The “Zazou-fl at-glitter” shoe by Louboutin.

Best show Surprising the fashion pros is a true art, and one that Karl Lagerfeld is a master of: he transformed the Grand Palais into a gallery. As a frame for 89 outfi ts he also designed 75 paintings and sculptures in the Chanel look.

Best party Model comeback: Former French fi rst lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was pre-sented as the new face for Bulgari’s “Diva” campaign at the elegant two-star restaurant Api-cius. These two di-vas share a passion: Carla and Holly-wood star Scarlett Johansson pose with Bulgari jewels.

Longskirts versus mini? We love both. But this season at Hermès skirts were below the knees. Big is better also goes for bags (Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane).

A Dog’s LifeGemma Correll, teNeues, approx. € 20

Mr. Pickles and Bella inspired many of the stories captured in this charming illustrated book by their mistress, author Gemma Correll. On 128 pages of clever entertainment, the book covers the whole spectrum of everyday canine life from “chaos dogs” and spoilt “lap puppies” to protective alpha dogs. Sometimes, you even see yourself refl ected in one of the stories. In the meantime, Correll indulges the every whim of her pugs…. We can’t wait for volume two!

The Monocle Guide to Better LivingMonocle, gestalten, approx. € 48

A guidebook, not to the hippest trends in the world, but to a ful-fi lled existence. Monocle subtly guides you through the crucial ar-eas of life: family, work, culture, travel and style. It does so by an-swering almost any question with indispensable tips. Which city is the best to live in? Why is culture good for you? How do I fi nd the right college for my kids? Which pieces of furniture will last forev-er? An excellent, sophisticated signpost. Simply beautiful.

The Impossible Collection of MotorcyclesIan Barry & Nicolas Stecher, Assouline, approx. € 516

“Racing is life!” says motorcycle afi cionado Steve McQueen. Motorcycle lovers have a thousand reasons for their passion: the speed, the design, the danger, the street cred. Slow down and indulge with this volume fi lled with legendary bikes: the BMW R7; the Easy Rider, which made Peter Fonda an icon; and Evil Knievel’s favorite – the Harley Davidson XR750.

All-American Vol. 13 – Born ReadyBruce Weber, teNeues, € 98, limited edition (5,000 copies)

Bruce Webber is among the world’s great fashion photographers, and he is a person who pays attention to the quiet voices in soci-ety. He is a thoughtful American patriot who loves his home coun-try. For this volume, Weber has once more collaborated with a diverse group of artists to create a collage of essays, poems and images, which paint a powerful portrait of today’s America. A poetic and very personal view.

MoreRankin, teNeues, € 1,750, Collector’s Edition

When it comes to Rankin, more is defi nitely more! This book showcases the most comprehensive retrospective of the celebrated fashion photographer to date: 368 pages spanning 20 years of un-usual images, impressive bodies, famous faces and a collaboration with Damien Hirst. “When you look at my work and compare it to other people’s, you realize that it is actually a bit unsettling, strange and challenging,” says Rankin.

Swans – Legends of the Jet SocietyNicholas Foulkes, Assouline, € 145

If this title makes you think of Truman Capote’s circle of female friends in New York’s high-society, you’re not very far off . This stunning illustrated book takes a look at the jet set of the 1950s, who, imbued with a natural elegance, beguiled the world with their travels, clothes, jewels and yachts. Three hundred pages of original photographs abound with their spirit. Legendary! FC

Hang tight: the “Book Rack” allows books to be suspend-

ed from its strings – in per-fect alignment and free from

Shelter with a TwistThe roof designed by Wolfram Putz, Gregor Hoheisel, Thomas Willemeit and

Lars Krückeberg (left to right) at the Graft firm of architects, resembles a giant leaf protecting the cars parked beneath it. “The elegant, amorphous geometry

of the roof structure forms a bridge between top and bottom, between the sky and the landscape,” is how the Berlin-based architects describe their design. The wafer-thin roof, which is made of steel and translucent fiberglass, is supported by two con-crete pillars securely anchored in the ground at a depth of 20 meters. The structure covers an area of roughly 1,600 square meters and creates a quiet space at the Auto-stadt Wolfsburg Service Pavilion for customers to familiarize themselves with their new cars on a test circuit – without the distraction of sunlight or rain.
