Students are expected to
1. Familiarize themselves with the nature of the International Political Economy; in
particular, the various schools of thought that have dominated IPE and their relative
utility.
2. Understand the relationship between the states and the markets, the ways they
mutually affected one another and the ways this relationship affects society in
general.
3. Analyze theories of IPE and their significance to issues in IPE.
10. Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are able to
1. Describe the three essential perspectives of IPE and which academic disciplines
they are most closely associated with (C1, P1, A1).
2. Distinguish state from market and society, the values each represent, the means
each follow and the goals each tries to achieve (C2, P2, A3).
3. Classify the four structures of IPE and examine their relationship with the three
level of analysis of IPE i.e. – state, market and society – and how they affect one

another (C3, P4, A3).
4. Analyze issues in IPE from the three perspectives of IPE and organize an
understanding of how IPE can be distinguished from other disciplines of social
sciences (C4, P4, A3).

13. Synopsis
This course addresses ways in which economic forces alter the international distribution
of political power and resources and ways political power change the international
distribution of wealth. In this respect, the course applies political-economy theories to the
international arena for the purpose of exposing students to the core and current issues that
affect the international political economy (IPE). The course deals with IPE ideologies and
perspectives, IPE structures, including production, trade, finance and knowledge-
technology and contemporary market-state tensions (regionalism, democratization,
economic transition/reform, development). Finally selected issues from vast area of topicsin IPE will be discussed including issues on development and democratization and the
environmental issues.

the programme is aimed at enabling the graduates to
participate in international affairs management in
areas of diplomacy, strategic studies, internationalnegotiation and international relations, seeking their
resolution as effective CEOs.

Students are required to complete and submit only one assignment in this module. Students must
write an individual assignment for this course based on the topics given earlier by courseinstructor. Students’ assignment must adhere to the format included in this instruction.
Assignment must be submitted to the course instructor on or before the due date which is on the
third meeting.
Assignment Format
1. Topics for individual assignment will be given by respective lecturer during the first
meeting.
2. Write your student number (right top corner) and course name and code (left top corner) onevery page.
3. Use A4 size paper.
4. A 4-cm margin should be on one side of each page for markers to write comments. A left
or right margin is acceptable. If there is no margin there will be minimal comments.
5. Write on one side of each page and staple all pages together. It is preferred that the top left
corner is stapled only.
6. Number all pages.

Gothic) Size: 12, Line Spacing: double-spaced.
8. Unless it is specifically requested, do not EMAIL assignments to lecturer.
9. DO NOT use folders, plastic sheets etc. to put assignment in.
10. All quotations MUST be acknowledged and referenced as per guidelines. All reference
must follow an APA system. Assignment should include a reference section.
11. The length of assignment should be within 15 to 20 pages
12. Assessment of student assignment will be based on knowledge, presentation and
