INDEPENDENT DAY AND BOARDING SCHOOL

BOYS AND GIRLS AGES 3-18

What makes us so special and so worthwhile? It has something to do with joy - the joy I see on pupils’ faces both in and out of lessons, the general air of happiness which pervades the school.

It has something to do with love - the love of knowledge, the love of study without barriers, the love that then can fl ourish between one person and another or between a student and a school when they are not balked by the usual diffi culties that accompany any attempt to learn.

It was something to do with peace. We are an oasis of relative peace in an educational environment and a society so often at war with others or within itself. Here, knowing how issues can arise when the barriers to study are not recognised or remedied, our troubles are minor compared with the friction and grief we so often hear about elsewhere.

The idea of Greenfi elds has something to do with harmony. Our student body is composed not only of local children but of young people from all over the world, from as far-ranging places as Japan, Kazakhstan, Italy, Israel, Africa, Spain, India and elsewhere. And yet, contrary perhaps to expectations, there is no confl ict and everyone learns quickly to admire and respect other cultures and viewpoints.

Laughter plays a big part here too. Hardly a day goes by without something hilarious happening either in or out of the classroom. Many of our students are natural comedians who fi nd, as they grow and gain confi dence, that their ability to make others laugh bears fruit in unexpected places. Anyone who was fortunate enough to see this year’s Greenfi elds Theatre Company performance of The 39 Steps (about which more later in this issue) will be able to testify to the fact that comedy is king here.

Head Teacher, Grant Hudson demonstrating that speeches need not be

boring during the Graduation ceremony

And the idea of Greenfi elds has something to do with light. Placed on a spectrum of Good and Evil, we defi nitely hover around the

“Good” end, as our products and achievements show.

Every year our graduates speak from the heart at the Graduation ceremony, thanking the school not only for its remarkable study methodology but also for the atmosphere which the application of that methodology engenders and allows to blossom: an atmosphere of joy, love, peace, harmony, laughter and light which will linger with them for the rest of their lives.

Greenfields Theatre Company 2011

On July 8th there could be seen 4 groups of enthusiastic children all striving to be this year’s champion team. With lots of vocal support and encouragement from family and friends the Red Racers, Yellow Bananas, Green Hornets and Blue Bolts ran a variety of relay races including the traditional egg and spoon race and hurdles.

After three days of intermittent heavy showers it was decided to go ahead anyway (with contingency plans for rain breaks in place, if needed). The weather gods were kind to us and it stayed dry as the teams battled to take the honours. After an hilarious and entertaining dressing up race the final points were added up and, for the first time, two teams shared the honours – Red Racers and Blue Bolts.

Body control, stamina, team work and performing for others are life skills that are all by-products of sports day. The practices allow for the younger children to learn new skills and the older ones to hone theirs, while acting as support for the youngest ones.

The team captains help with managing the equipment, ensuring their team members understand what to do and then setting up for the day itself. This year, the preschool raced in the team events and took great pride in wearing their new PE kit. This introduction to a whole school activity was a new experience for them and they played their parts to the full. These are the team captains of the future!

Summer Family Fun Dayor Beating the Great British Summer Part 2

Originally to have been held on the school fields, the summer family fun day was hastily re-located under torrential rain to the spacious veranda and classrooms in the lower school. In valiant British style (stick to the plan and ignore the weather) fun was had by all.

Voluminous amounts of home made cake and exotic foods were consumed along with BBQ cooking. Games, quizzes, a craft stall and raffles took place and excellent entertainment was provided by dancers of various ages, including Lucy Renouf (shown right wearing pink) who is currently competing in 4 different categories of the British Dance championships. The PTA, headed by Claire Lore, did a wonderful job of making the day a complete success.

Dastardly foreign agents stealing Ministry of Defence secrets and plotting war, opposed only by the innocent but dashing Lieutenant Richard Hannay, accused of murder and on the run from the police – this was the basic plot of this year’s Greenfields Theatre Company play, applauded by many as the most entertaining they had ever seen.

“The 39 Steps was the most fun GTC I have ever rehearsed,” commented director and Drama teacher Maria Bird. “I laughed all the way through. The students were fantastic and kept on coming up with bright ideas that we put in. It is a play full of scope for physical theatre and our actors are very able at that.”

More difficult technically to put on stage than anything previously attempted at the school, The 39 Steps took a lot of rehearsals, but the incredibly intelligent and able actors, prop designers, costume-makers and promotional people – all students – very soon got into the swing of it, performed it perfectly and played it to packed houses on each of the three nights.

“Furthermore, the West End cast of the play The 39 Steps currently performing there got in touch with the school via Twitter,” said Head Teacher Grant Hudson. “They gave us tips and wished us luck! It was great to have their input and gave the students a real boost!”

What a spiffing performance!

I moved to Forest Row 11 years ago for family reasons. On the recommendation of a family friend, I went to look at a little place called Greenfields. The story my parents always say clinched it for them was a day, less than a week into my enrolment at Greenfields, when they picked me up and asked me how school was, and I said, “Great.” Great? To me, school had always been this big inefficient machine where students are shoved in a sardine can and have knowledge thrown at them in the hope that a fraction of it sticks. At Greenfields I had found a different approach to learning based on consulting a student’s understanding. This was new. This fitted me well. I thought “Great!”

I could say that I loved it, but the truth is actually more interesting: the Study Technology used at Greenfields meant that I found something really weird happened over the next three years. I grew in knowledge, I grew in

confidence, I grew in determination to be who I am – and nothing stopped me. There were no barriers to learning for me; there were no barriers to being me.

Of course I had to jump through the hoops that were presented to me by the outside world’s system of examinations and grades. But to be honest I was already looking beyond and ahead, far further beyond and ahead than I had dared to dream earlier in my life. I knew early on that I wanted to be a writer – but I didn’t want this just to be some kind of vague, unrealised goal. I set about in these last years at school carving out my own way of approaching things, my own path, my own designs.

Ultimately, these designs will come to fruition and I will be a successful writer and will conquer the world that way.

Right now, as part of this Grand Plan, I hope to go to university next year to study maths and computing. This will give me the stable foundation I need to create my writing. Already, towards the end of my second year in the Sixth Form, I got a great job as a web developer and marketer, and

have all sorts of start-up business endeavours and websites in the works for my long term careers.

All those skill sets were largely independently self taught, outside the subjects I was studying for A Levels – but the point is that I was able to study them, able to put my mind to just about anything and make it happen, able to think outside the box and be myself without too much compromise.

Thank goodness for Greenfields and its methodology and for the atmosphere which allowed this to happen. I feel great. And I know I have just begun.

That’s a selection of some of what Greenfields has done for me. It’s given me the freedom to further my own drive and ambition and shown me the world the way it really is. That’s a big gift. I appreciate it. And when I’m out there, succeeding on many fronts, I won’t forget it.

I was a student at Greenfields school from the early infants to the Fifth Form, where I then chose to follow a career in performing arts, receiving training in acting and singing at Lewes college for my A Levels. I soon realised that the technical side of theatre interested me more and looked to train in this area.

I was accepted onto a set of two courses at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London to train as a Lighting Designer. Greenfields gave me the opportunity to discover an art form that not many people notice. Lighting. I am now an award winning international Lighting Designer for concerts, dance shows, musicals and straight drama.

I am also running a successful lighting company I started in 2008: GPSLighting

If anything, my story shows what you can really achieve if you put your mind to it. And the answer is anything.

Take this year’s play – with so many different lighting changes and sound effects, it was quite a show, but it simply couldn’t happen without the students coming together and making the show happen. We have student stage managers, a student lighting designer and student sound designer, who with a little guidance, have created a fabulous piece of work. I can say that hands down, this group of students care for each other more than any professional production company I have worked with.

Graduation & Awards

I came to England at the age of eight years old and spoke only a few words of English. When I arrived at Greenfields, imagine how lost I felt – eight years old with a new school, a new country and worst of all – the English weather.

The reason why Greenfields is so special to me is because of the extraordinary people here and the great family feeling.

Now I’ve been to quite a few graduations and in almost every speech, it’s mentioned that what makes Greenfields special is the great family feeling. But what exactly is this “great family feeling”? Is it the genuine smile each teacher gives us? Maybe the good proverbial bottom kicking they give us to keep us in line, the laughs and jokes you are able to share with the teachers, or never having to worry about raising your hand and asking for help.

The teachers manage to pick you up when you fall down.

Or maybe it’s the pat on the back when you really need it the most. I can safely say that not only are the staff my so-called “teachers”. They are also my friends – who are willing to do anything for the students in this school. No words can explain the gratitude I feel for the teachers.

Since Greenfields isn’t a big school, I’ve learned of the true value of friendship and how important every individual is in this group. The close

brother-like relationships that I’ve made at this school is so special to me.

To Alan, my step father, I don’t know I could ever start to thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You gave me a home, an education and you’ve given me what any little boy needs, a father. Although we don’t really look alike, I would like to tell you that in my heart, you are not my step-father. You are my daddy.

To my Grandfather, my hero, my first best friend. He gave me everything he could when I was kid. I’m living his dream of being in England right now and I hope he was here to see this. And I know he is looking down on me right now and granddad – I hope I’ve done you proud.

My mother and I didn’t exactly have what you would call a normal relationship. I was born and raised in the Philippines and at the age of 2, my mother went abroad leaving me

with my grandparents. She knew that this was the only way to get me a good education and enough money to support me and my family.I still remember the day she left me to go abroad, she gave me a lollipop and told me to be a strong boy, to help the family when I could. She would send back little gifts and yes, I still have the first item she sent me. My mum took a risk not many single parents would have taken. She worked hard, knowing that she was doing the best thing for me.

Almost all graduates say something about the beginning of the rest of our life starting today. Well that may be true to an extent, but it seems most of us are already ahead of the game as Greenfields has given us Study Technology and that has always prepared us to face the real world. I have been at Greenfields now for 7

years and I have loved every minute of it.

When I first arrived at Greenfields I thought it was a magical place with the lower school block almost hiding in the forest.

I loved my time down in the lower school meeting loads of great friends and teachers. From a great two years in the lower school I moved into the upper school. Throughout this time I was gaining experience in applying the Study Technology used at Greenfields. I had grown up with it and it was part of my life, but I could see that it was enabling me to really enjoy my studies and I would like to thank Mr. Hubbard for that. I have now finished my 5th GTC (Greenfields Theatre Company) which is one thing I love about this school and it should never leave as this is when the whole school comes together to create an amazing play. So thank you everyone for putting it on and well done! It was brilliant!

And finally I would like to thank the executives and trustees of the school as they have provided me with Study

Technology during my education, which has greatly helped me and is a useful tool to use in life. Thank you also for making this such a brilliant school to come to and for making it worthwhile to get up in the morning because you know you’re going to have a great day so thank you very much for making the school what it is.

I have been at Greenfields School for thirteen years.

I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, that Greenfields is just like a second home to me. I feel greatly fortunate and honoured to grow up in such a safe and friendly environment. I can honestly say, and I’m sure many people will agree with me, that it’s like a big family at Greenfields. Greenfields is extraordinary because it uses Study Technology which has been extremely useful in my life. I have been lucky enough to have had it for many years and it has greatly increased my ability to understand and learn.

It is the technology which provides people with a firm foundation for whatever it is they wish to do in later life. Knowing how to learn anything is like being handed a marvellous gift right at the beginning of one’s career which will benefit a person for the rest of their life.

One of the main things that makes the teachers unique at Greenfields is that each and every one of them is so passionate about what they are teaching – that it makes it thoroughly enjoyable to learn from them.

Thank you to everyone that has been supportive and helpful at my years in Greenfields. I am leaving prepared and confident to take on whatever life throws at me.

I stand here today as a Graduate of Greenfields, having finished my education here.

By graduating, I of course mean I am now leaving Greenfields. Though, then again, I suppose that’s not entirely true, is it? I mean, a

place, any place, that has become so much like a second family to you, can you ever really leave it?

I am a great fan of Greenfields. Only here have I felt like I can truly “learn”. That’s thanks to a skill given to me by Greenfields, which I can now take through life, knowing how much it is helping me every step of the way: Study Technology.

Since I finished my studies here, I haven’t stopped my education. I’m now about to start the second year of my degree through the Open University and I don’t think I would have managed without the help, support and dedication from all of my teachers.

And I’d like to thank them, all of them, not just for getting me get through Greenfields, but letting me be a part of it.

Now, originally I was going to thank everyone in a kind of lump sum deal. Not now I’m afraid, so you can blame the people who told me to make this longer for that one!

My family: you’re the most supportive, and loving family I could have ever asked for. I love you all, and thank you.

Thank you to my parents, without them I wouldn’t be here today… for obvious reasons. Two loving and supportive parents, what more could I ever ask for?

I think, if my life continues to be filled with people as wonderful as they are now, the future looks pretty bright.

Jason Eichner Graduate

I came to Greenfields when I was 6 years old. I have been at Greenfields for most of my education except when I was in Scotland. When I moved down from Scotland I couldn’t read and my hand writing wasn’t as good as all of the others in my class but with help from my teachers I got up to the same point as everybody else.

I remember my first day arriving at the school and everyone seemed so happy and enthusiastic to learn. As I moved further up in my education, it was always fun to learn new subjects that kept you interested. Greenfields

is unique because of the use of Study Technology which has been such a huge advantage in my studies and I know it will be greatly helpful in life! I now know that I can study anything and really understand what I am studying which basically opens the door to any career.

What I love about Greenfields is that everybody is like one family no matter what the age group is.

I would like to thank all of the teachers who have helped me throughout my years of being at Greenfields.

I would also like to thank L Ron Hubbard for Study Technology as it has been the most useful material throughout my school years.

Lastly I would like to thank my parents for bringing me to England and taking me to such a good school as Greenfields. I don’t even want to know what I would have been like in Scotland. You both have been amazing parents supporting me at Greenfields and helping me with anything I need. You are such wonderful parents and I couldn’t ask for more! Thank you.

Graduation & Awards

Sandra GonzalesGraduateThese 2 years at Greenfields School

have gone as quickly as two blinks.

I remember visiting Greenfields for the first time. My only concern was learning English. I packed up, got on a plane, and flew to England. I flew over all the green fields and farms. I stepped off the plane, and met the heavy rain for the first time. I told myself, “Welcome to England”.

I was worried that I might not make friends here, but in fact, it turned out to be one of the best 2 years of my life. I learned how to make friends from other countries, and not be scared of knowing about new cultures.

In my previous school smoking with the teachers and even going out of school during lessons was pretty normal. Also they didn’t know the word “respect” or “treat others like you would like them to treat you”. I’ve been around many students that just wanted to pass their exams, and finish their education as soon as possible, and end up living on their parent’s money. That’s not what I wanted for myself.

The first thing that called my attention to this school was the high level of ethics at Greenfields. Ethics has helped me to realize that what is real to me, might not be real for the

rest. That we’re not alone on this planet and we all get affected by what we do. I have learned that if you don’t respect yourself, others won’t respect you.

An important rule of this school: LOOK UP YOUR MISUNDERSTOOD WORDS! I had never put it in practice until I came here. When I realized the improvement in my studies, I was amazed. I couldn’t believe the difference it had made. It got me to realize how essential it was.

Thank you all for making my journey unforgettable. I am going to miss all of this.

I came to this school fourteen years ago from my home in Brighton with my parents. The Lower School was great fun. The way in which we were introduced to subjects made it feel as though we were just having fun. That will be a time I will never forget.

As I progressed through the school and into the seniors I gained greater understanding of how the school runs using Study Technology. I started to enjoy my time even more in the seniors and I got acquainted with new friends and my new area. This led to some really great times academically as I saw my grades rise. I was enjoying life at school as I really applied my Study Technology. Progressing onto GCSEs provided a new challenge for me personally as I had to up my game and I would like to greatly thank the teachers for helping me to do so.

But overall I would really like to thank all the teachers, in upper and lower block for guiding me through my entire school life and for this I am really grateful because not only do the teachers teach us subjects but

they do it with such positive intention and the fact that they actually care about you as an individual. This really sets Greenfields apart from the other schools.

I would like to thank my parents, they are the best. I can’t really put it any simpler than that. They’ve supported me really well in this exam year and I’m very grateful for them. They are a real inspiration for me with their hard work and the endless amounts of laughs I’ve had with them.

Lastly I would like to thank Mr Hubbard for coming up with Study Technology which has greatly helped me in my studies. I can never thank you all enough for my time here I hope you find a way to manage without me. Thank you very much for my time here.

The paparazzi were out in force as this year’s celebrity students arrived in style, sweeping into the turning circle in a black limousine. The glamorous evening began with canapés and photographs, then proceeded into a magical candlelit dinner featuring chicken a la crème, followed by strawberry cheesecake and triplechocolate cake.

The (non-alcoholic) champagne bottles popped all evening long, and dancing continued until the early hours of the morning.

The night ended with a bang when an impressive firework display lit up the sky to mark the end of a special year for a very special group of people: the Greenfields Graduates.

I’ve been at Greenfields for fourteen years and I have gained a good education in that time. Through the years I’ve learnt a lot that I would not have learnt in any regular school.

Knowing about Study Technology has definitely improved my studies in all subjects and without it I know I would be doing much worse in my academics. It has set me up well and I now know fully that I can study any subject and be able to apply it life.

I’ve enjoyed being at the school for so long and it seems wrong to leave! I’ve had some of my best memories here which I will never forget and that will never fail to make smile or laugh.

I came to Greenfields School three years ago with my little sister to the summer school – it was so much fun!

After the summer, my parents asked me if I wanted to come back for a term. It was a hard decision to make as I was so young. They said it would be the best thing I could do and as they had given me everything in life and they always wanted the best for me I decided to try it for a term.

I spent a long time at first learning and improving my English until I was ready to join in with the rest of the school. At the end of my first year I became Head Girl in boarding – a position which came with a lot of responsibilities as well as privileges.

Though I made many good friends here, my time would not have been the same without all the great staff members and boarding supervisors – I want to thank them all for making this place the way it is.

Summer BoardingSummer fun started early for the boarders this year, with over 30 children of all nationalities already being shown the sights and taught English at the same time. Many more will be arriving during the summer holidays and the boarding and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) staff have been intensively organising days out and activities designed to be fun as well as educational.

So far, the children have been to Madame Tussauds in London, been on a River Cruise, visited Piccadilly, Westminster, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace. They have sun bathed on the sandy beach at

Camber Sands as well visiting the grand old Victorian seaside towns of Brighton and Eastbourne. They have shopped in one of the biggest malls in Europe, gone bowling, shot each other in laser games, watched movies and are generally having a lot of fun along with their scheduled English lessons. In fact this promises to be the busiest summer Greenfield Boarding has ever had!

“It takes brilliant imagination to be a teacher, it takes brilliant reasoning power to be happy in this world. If all children were taught to reason as they learned a few facts, they would have what nature intended for them to have, a better castle for their defence.”

You can put this toward your child’s fees, make a donation to the scholarship fund or simply pick up your cheque. We thank you for your continued support.

The majority of our students arrive through word of mouth.

I’ve been a Greenfi elds parent since 1983. It is the only school I know where the children run towards the school, not only when late!

I have been heard to say it is the best school in the universe – much more of a family, in fact, than a school, with amazing amounts of support and interaction between pupils and the staff.

Greenfi elds methods are based upon strong moral and ethical standards as well as the Study Technology which are APPLIED rather than just talked about and which can help ANY child to know when one of the 3 barriers to study has been encountered. Greenfi elds results are spectacular in helping children get into life and win at their chosen games. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
