    The Activities

    Since its creation in 2008,more than 60,000 GlobalEntrepreneurship Weekevents have taken place.

    Host organizations in 88 dierentcountries continue to build their

    campaigns through local, nationaland global activities rom online toace-to-ace, and rom large-scalecompetitions and events to intimatenetworking gatherings. The uniyingactor o embracing entrepreneurialbehavior is at the heart o everyactivity in every country.

    In addition to individual countryactivity, in 2009 Ocial GEWActivities were developed andpromoted to all countries toenable national campaigns toengage globally across bordersand to inspire new ideas at the

    intersection o cultures.

    TheGlobalCleantechOpenIdeas Competition combedthe world or the best greeninnovators.

    The winner o the CleanTech Open Ideas Competitionwas Replenish Energy rom

    Puerto Rico, a company thathas the capacity to provide arenewable, carbon-negativeuel in the orm o microalgae,to either substitute or blendwith uel oil or diesel at wellbelow current petroleum prices.

    This idea was one o sevennalists selected roma global search in 28 countriesor the best clean technologybusiness ideas. Ideas includedeverything rom revolutionaryways to generate clean energy,to better ways to lter water, to

    ideas about how governmentalpolicies around climate changecan oster new businesses.

    The competition culminatedin Silicon Valley, USA, wherethe nalists presented theirve-minute pitch in ront oa crowd o 3,000 investors,entrepreneurs, sponsoring

    GEW Global Partner, YESor Europe, held a largeSpeednetwork the Globeevent to kick-o their AnnualSummit held at the EuropeanParliament in Brussels. Youngentrepreneurs came togetherrom across Europe to makeconnections ast in order tomake new contacts and growtheir businesses internationally.

    TURKEY | Istanbul

    SpeedCity brought together leadingentrepreneurs in Turkey and aspiringyoung entrepreneurs to build teamworkskills as a real-lie pit crew or aFormula One car. Two replica carswere brought in, with each personassigned tasks like changing tires,reueling and drilling. The winning

    team o students, showed their abilityto learn new skills and apply themquickly - even aster than establishedCEOs o Turkey. The event waspreceded by a Speednetwork theGlobe session, which allowed the twogroups to exchange entrepreneurialideas and contacts.

    companies, corporations,members o academia andpress. Replenish Energyreceived more than $100,000 inmarketing support, legal adviceand conerencing services tohelp launch their business.

    Mentoring Madness,sponsored by NYSE Euronext,brought advice to aspiringbootstrap entrepreneursthrough 763 mentoring activities.

    More than 200 universitystudents gathered at the NewYork Stock Exchange or thelaunch event o MentoringMadness, posing theirentrepreneurial questions tothe panel, headlined by rapartist and serial entrepreneurSnoop Dogg.

    The panel also selected thewinner o Movers & Changers,a nationwide business plancompetition run by mtvU andNYSE Euronext. Three studentsrom Tulane University wereawarded $25,000 in startupunds or their venture, WET

    Tea, which is aimed at raisingsocial awareness, communityinvolvement and monetarysupport or the preservationand reconstruction o the GulCoast Wetlands by sellingartisan tea.

    The Global InnovationTournamentchallenged nearly1,000 contestants in 31 countriesto come up with innovative waysto make saving money un.

    Following a two week judgingperiod, a prestigious panel

    o experts rom all over theworld selected 300 candidatesor global judging, beoredeciding on 22 winners rom12 countries. For each entry,the judges evaluated aspectssuch as the innovation andnovelty o the idea, how un itwas, and whether the teamimplemented the idea tocreate a positive impact.

    For Demmellash, Co-ounder o RisingTide Capital, a nonprot organizationbased in Jersey City assistingcommunities to build strong businessesthat transorm lives, strengthenamilies and create vibrant, sustainable

    neighborhoods, GEWUSA helped providea platorm to advance her personal andproessional goals. Demmellash washeavily promoted by the GEW PlanningTeam, with her story told in publicationslike BusinessWeek, Entreprneur.comand Inc Magazine. This media attentionhelped advance the brand o Rising TideCapital, and position them as a globalprovider o services.

    Theres been a lot o ongoing responseand I think what GEW was able to door us, and why I thought it was moreimportant than ever that we did GEW,was because we all o the sudden hadthis global audience. Our Web trac shotup enormously and were getting peoplecontacting us rom around the world.

    More Than Just a Week

    SOUTH AFRICAIn South Arica, The University othe Witwatersrands Wits BusinessSchool launched a South AricaStartup Index (SASI) during GlobalEntrepreneurship Week. One o themain objectives o SASI is to createawareness in the marketplacearound innovative South Aricanstart-up companies with thepotential to compete on the globalstage. SASI will operate as acollaboration between academia,private sector institutions andgovernment, and will includeacademic research around thestart-up environment. It will alsoaim to organize the start-upcommunity in South Arica andacilitate networks with dierententrepreneurship support anddevelopmental institutions.

    ARGENTINAArgentina had a law enactedsaying the last day o GEW is theDay o the Entrepreneur.

    GEW is a rallying point or a worldwide movement oentrepreneurial people. Its not just about one week. Throughthe platorm o GEW, existing programs are showcased, newentrepreneurial initiatives are launched, national policies areinfuenced and entrepreneurial people who got their rstinspiration rom GEW go on to achieve great things.

    Brand Piano, an initiative held duringGEWUK 2009, helped our fedging Londonbusinesses get revitalized, through theirprogram o mentorship and peer-to-peernetworking. Mildred Talabi, the 26 year

    old owner o RawLoveUK and winner othe program, received 1,000 investmentto help grow her business, along withongoing mentoring and support.

    I was able to immediately apply theknowledge I learned to grow my businessand increase sales. Weve launched anew product which is selling really well,been eatured in several media outletsand been shortlisted or the YoungEntrepreneurs category in a LambethBusiness Awards.

    CountriesEighty-eight countries hostedGlobal Entrepreneurship Weekin 2009, each running acampaign tailored to theaudience and entrepreneurialclimate in their country. Severalother nations participatedinormally through a smallcollection o standalone activities.

    Within each country was a Hostorganization, responsible orcatalyzing a national network opartners to organize events andrun competitions. The campaignsor the countries were as diverseas those who participated withlocal entrepreneurs and themeshighlighted in each.

    JAPAN | Tokyo

    Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama spokeat Japans Entrepreneurial Sceneconerence, which highlighted socialentrepreneurship and action thatgovernment and businesses cantake to promote innovation. Topicscovered included ways to reducecarbon emissions, what motivatesyoung entrepreneurs and oreignperspectives on Japans entrepreneurs.Baseball legend Bobby Valentine andcreative visionary Patrick Newell werealso in attendance, discussing theirentrepreneurial success.

    The Global Student EntrepreneurAwards brought student entrepreneursrom 27 countries to Kansas Cit y, Missouri,to compete or $150,000 in cash anddonated services. The grand prize went to24-year-old Milun Tesovic, who developedMetroLyrics, the most popular music lyricssite in the world.
