It took just four days in 1863 to etch Gettysburg into our national lexicon forever. From July 1 to 3, a Union victory in the largest battle ever fought in North America helped turn the tide of the American Civil War. One November morning four months later, President Abraham Lincoln dedicated the Soldiers’ National Cemetery with his immortal Address. In just about two minutes time, our 16th President ushered in a new birth of freedom, proclaiming Gettysburg as a touchstone of our national history.
This year, the Gettysburg Foundation and Gettysburg National Military Park are commemorating the 150th anniversary of this epic battle and unforgettable speech with historic events that will touch millions of individuals throughout the country and the world. This Commemorative Events Guide will lead you through the various events and programs that are guaranteed to educate and inspire. From ranger programs and battle walks to book signings and receptions, there is something for all ages and levels of interest.
In addition to the commemorative events, it is the Foundation’s goal to use this 150th commemoration as a time to re-dedicate Gettysburg to future generations by raising critical funds and awareness. The Gettysburg Foundation, in partnership with Gettysburg National Military Park, is helping to build a future where the stories and sacrifices of Gettysburg are not only known, but cherished and passed on for the next 150 years and beyond.
We invite people from all walks of life to join us to support initiatives that will positively impact the landscape and the visitor experience at Gettysburg now and well into the future, thereby continuing the traditional legacy of good stewardship at Gettysburg. To accomplish this goal, the Foundation is embarking on a five-year effort to build support in three critical areas: preservation, acquisition and education. Without the preservation and acquisition of historic land and artifacts, like the George
Spangler Farm and the priceless possessions of soldiers and civilians, the story of Gettysburg will be lost and the lessons soon forgotten. Through educational programming and outreach, we can teach the timeless meaning of individual sacrifice and teamwork, first shown here in 1863. These three critical areas will sustain not only the battlefield but also the message of selflessness, ideals and reconciliation that can be found on the fields of Gettysburg.
Gettysburg belongs to all of us, and its capacity to captivate our collective imagination and define and inspire our national character endures. Those who return to Gettysburg often tell us they learn something different each visit—and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Whether it’s your first visit or
your fifth, whether you are a new or veteran student of Gettysburg and the Civil War, the Gettysburg Foundation and Gettysburg National Military Park remain committed to providing novel opportunities to learn, ever-expanding museum collections to examine and newly preserved sacred ground to explore.

The film A New Birth of Freedom, narrated by Morgan Freeman, will orient your group to the battle of Gettysburg and the American Civil War. After the film, ascend the escalator to see the massive battle of Gettysburg Cyclorama
painting. This original 1884 work of art is larger than a football field and combines with an overhead canopy and three-dimensional diorama to create a Victorian illusion. Be surrounded by the action of Pickett’s Charge on the third day of the battle. And don’t miss the Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War, where the story of the battle of Gettysburg and the Civil War is told through 12 galleries, including artifacts, interactive exhibits and additional films. Allow one to two hours for the Cyclorama, Film and Museum experience.
The new exhibit Treasures of the Civil War is included in the price of each ticket.

Tickets for the film and Cyclorama are assigned a time. Shows begin every 15 minutes starting at 8:15 a.m. with the last show at 5:15 p.m.

During the American Civil War, the fate of the nation balanced on a few political, military and cultural leaders who had one thing in common: they achieved national fame by helping to chart a course through the nation’s
greatest crisis. As part of the Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center presents the new exhibit Treasures of the Civil War: Legendary Leaders Who Shaped a War and a Nation.
Most of the nearly 100 artifacts, from outstanding Civil War collections throughout the United States, are being exhibited at Gettysburg for the first time, offering a rare glimpse into the personal and professional lives of these 13 legends.

One of Gettysburg’s Licensed Battlefield Guides will provide you with a private tour in your own vehicle and explain the major events of the three-day battle. Tours may be customized based on your interests. Standard car tours are two hours but can be customized upon request. Tip: Guides are limited, so schedule your tour well in advance.
Board the bus, sit back, relax and let us do the driving as a Licensed Battlefield Guide explains the three-day battle of Gettysburg during your two-hour tour. Allow 2 1/2 hours total for the battlefield bus tour. Tip: Seating is limited, so reserve yours well in advance.
Tour the Gettysburg battlefield at your own pace with an audio CD you can listen to in your car. These narrated battlefield CD tours can be purchased in the Museum Bookstore.
Pick up a free self-guided auto tour map from the Museum and Visitor Center and explore the Gettysburg battlefield by car.
There’s nothing quite like standing on the Gettysburg battlefield. In addition to the wide array of ranger guided programs in this guide, the Museum and Visitor Center offers a number of other ways to experience the battlefield designed to fit your
interests and timeline. All Battlefield Guides offering tours from the Museum and Visitor Center are licensed by the Gettysburg National Military Park.

Calling all kids! From July 1 - 4 the front lawn of the Museum and Visitor Center, near the main entrance, will house a special Family Activities Tent full of programs and hands-on history. Stations will include a Living History stage
where a new Gettysburg “personality” will be revealed each hour; Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery drilling stations; soldier pastimes circle, dress-up photo booth, and an “Ask a Ranger” desk. All activities are FREE.
Children can earn a special 150th anniversary Junior Ranger patch by completing activities in the Junior Ranger activity book.
Receive a Junior Ranger workbook at the Family Activities Tent from July 1-4 or inside at the Information Desk all other days.
Junior Rangers can earn a keepsake identity card depicting one of six different Gettysburg soldiers and civilians - designed to look like a Civil War daguerreotype.
Earn all six by exploring the footsteps of the individuals – one by one – and bringing “proof” back to the Family Activities Tent or NPS Information Desk. (Proof can be in the form of a phone photograph, or other demonstration of knowledge from the sites identified on the card.)

Please secure your vehicles and stow any valuables.
When possible, use free public transit leaving your car in designated parking areas. Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center parking lots are free.Freedom Transit lines, a free Gettysburg area transportation system, picks up at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. For schedules and routes, see pages 16 and 17.
Pets are not allowed inside the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center or in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. Service dogs are welcome. Leashed pets are allowed on the battlefield except on or in monuments and towers.
Pets must be attended at all times. Do not leave animals unattended in vehicles even just for a few minutes, as interior temperatures rise quickly.

5 Ways To Be Well-Prepared for Your Visit to Gettysburg
Come prepared with water, preferably refillable water bottles. Drinking fountains are available at the Museum and Visitor Center and at selected sites on the battlefield.
Apply sunscreen generously and repeatedly throughout the day even if it is overcast. Most ranger programs are outside and last between 30 minutes and two hours.
Wear comfortable footwear designed for uneven terrain and for hiking long distances.
Carry a cell phone to contact 911 in case of emergency. Also, upon arrival at the park, select a meeting place in case you or your family become separated.
Reduce your chances of getting a tick-borne disease by using repellents, checking for ticks, and showering after being outdoors. If you have a tick bite followed by a fever or rash, seek medical attention.

This event will feature live music by the United States Military Academy Orchestra, a performance of the National Anthem by country music artist Trace Adkins, a keynote address by historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, and “Voices of History,” a dramatic reading of eyewitness accounts written by soldiers and citizens swept into the events of the battle and its tragic aftermath. The ceremony will end with a procession to the Soldiers’ National Cemetery to see luminaries marking each of the more than 3,500 graves of soldiers killed in the battle of Gettysburg. Sponsored by Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg Foundation, this event is free to the public.

Last March of the Iron Brigade As the 1,800 men of the famed Iron Brigade marched up the Emmitsburg Road on the morning of July 1, none of them could have imagined what lay ahead. Follow in the footsteps of these men as they marched into a battle that would win them immortality but at a terrible cost.

Park at National Cemetery Lots, Museum and Visitor Center Lots, or on Hancock Avenue and walk to the Codori Farm. Arrange for return transportation at the end of the program or take a park shuttle to Gettysburg College Stadium West Lot, walk three blocks to the Freedom Transit station on Carlisle Street and take a shuttle back to the Museum & Visitor Center.

Yankees, Rebels and Civilians – The First Day of Battle Ends Defeated Union soldiers streamed through the streets of Gettysburg pursued by the victorious Confederates. Yankees, Rebels and civilians were all thrown together in the town. Explore three iconic buildings: Pennsylvania Hall at Gettysburg College, Christ Lutheran Church and the Gettysburg Train Station. Each location offers a 30-minute interpretive program on the hour (4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.) allowing visitors to move from site to site at will.

Voices of Battle – The First Day Living historians bring to life the eyewitness accounts of the soldiers and civilians who experienced the tragedy of the battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.

Station 1 – Little Round Top The key terrain on the Union left flank and the scene of heavy fighting on the afternoon of July 2.

Station 2 – Devil’s Den The Union 3rd Corps anchored its left flank here on July 2. That afternoon a desperate struggle ensued when Con-federates of Longstreet’s Corps attacked.

Station 3 – The Wheatfield The wheatfield of farmer George Rose changed hands several times in the ebb and flow of battle on July 2 and left hundreds of casualties.

Station 4 – The Peach Orchard This linchpin of the forward line established by General Sickles’ 3rd Corps was overrun by troops of Longstreet’s 1st Corps in furious fighting.

Station 5 – High Water Mark Late in the afternoon of July 2, Confederate attacks nearly broke through the Union line on Cemetery Ridge.

Station 6 – Spangler’s Spring Confederates of General Ewell’s 2nd Corps moved forward to attack Culp’s Hill in early evening. The battle that spread across the hill’s slopes lasted until 10 p.m.

Johnston On the early morning of July 2, Gen-eral Lee ordered a reconnaissance to locate the left flank of the Union army by Captain Samuel R. Johnston, an engineer officer on his staff. Johnston claimed to have visited Little Round Top. But did he? Explore the contro-versy of his reconnaissance.

Station 1 – Spangler’s Spring The battle for Culp’s Hill was renewed at daylight. Men of Confederate General Ewell’s 2nd Corps launched repeated attacks upon the entrenched Union troops of the 12th Corps.

Lee and Longstreet on July 3When General Lee rode over to Longstreet’s headquarters early in the morning, he discovered the corps commander was not prepared to attack and, in fact, opposed the attack Lee suggested. Discuss the fateful decision to mount a massive attack upon the Union center at Gettysburg.

Pickett’s Charge Commemorative MarchWalk in the footsteps of Confeder-ate soldiers who made this attack from Seminary Ridge or stand on the ground defended by Union soldiers on Cemetery Ridge. Nine National Park Rangers lead groups representing each of the Confederate assaulting bri-gades, and three National Park Rang-ers will assemble groups where men of three Union divisions awaited the attack. The Commemorative March will end with a playing of Echo Taps.
Location: To follow in the footsteps of Confederate soldiers, the park strongly encourages visitors to leave their car near the Museum and Visitor Center and walk across the fields to the North Carolina or Virginia Memorial to begin. Visitors may also park at the National Cemetery lots. The distance from these parking areas to West Confederate Avenue is just over a mile.Time: 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Station 1 -Soldiers’ National Cemetery: The DeadIn the months following the battle, this cemetery was established as the final resting place for 3,556 Union soldiers who lost their lives in the battle. On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln helped dedicate this hallowed ground with his Gettysburg Address.
Location: Inside the Taneytown Road entrance to the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, Auto Stop #16Times: 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Station 2 -The George Spangler Farm: the Wounded This farm served as the 11th Corps field hospital, treating over 1,600 wounded Union and Confederate soldiers during and after the battle. See page 66 for more information.
Location: Access to the George Spangler farm is available by shuttle bus only. This is free and will run regularly from the Museum & Visitor Center.Program Times: 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Station 3 -The Brian Farm: the Civilians Civilians were more than innocent bystanders of the battle. They helped house and care for the wounded and bury the dead, and struggled to rebuild and restore normalcy to their lives following the greatest battle ever fought in North America.

Station 4 - Meade’s Headquarters: the PrisonersNearly 17,000 men became prisoners of war during the battle. This is the story of their experience from the battlefield to prison camp.

The complete preservation of the Spangler Farm will provide the opportunity for historic
interpretation and ensure the 1,900 men who were treated on the property did not suffer in vain. While the Gettysburg Foundation, the non-profit partner of Gettysburg National Military Park, has begun making great strides in the rehabilitation of the Spangler Farm property and structures to its
1863 appearance, there is still much work to be done. Through the help of generous donors and supporters, like you, the Spangler Farm can eventually be rehabilitated and teach the untold stories of the farm. Gettysburg Aftermath in 4D – The Rose FarmWithin days of the battle, Alexander Gardner and his crew recorded more photographs of the Civil War’s human toll than any other photographer at any other battlefield of the war. Join Licensed Battlefield Guides Garry Adelman and Tim Smith for a four-dimensional experience that explores the stories behind some of these photographs.

The Slyder Farm and Family Participate in some of the daily farm chores – including blacksmithing, fence-building and flailing wheat. Confront their reality as Union soldiers warn the family to leave their farm quickly in the face of oncoming Confederate soldiers. Learn about the state of the farm upon the family’s return on July 7, 1863.
Location: Program begins at the 1st Vermont Cavalry marker, near the Slyder farm trailhead on South Confederate Avenue, and ends at the Slyder farmTime: 10 a.m. – Noon

The Rupp House History Center, established in 2002, is located at 451 Baltimore Street and is the
in-town presence for the Gettysburg Foundation and a gathering place for Friends of Gettysburg members. During the Battle, the Rupp House was home to John and Caroline Rupp and their six children. When the fighting began on July 1, Caroline and the children fled, but John stayed behind.

The David Wills House offers visitors a world-class museum experience that tells the story of
Lincoln’s visit to Gettysburg to give his famous Gettysburg Address; his host, David Wills; and the extensive recovery effort following the three-day battle. The David Wills House is an official site within Gettysburg National Military Park.
Visit Lincoln’s bedroom where he put the final touches on his Gettysburg Address and learn what it was like to play host to the President of the United States on such a momentous occasion!

No prior experience is necessary, just a desire to share your love of Gettysburg with others.
Home Guard volunteers have provided over 4,000 service hours annually to the Gettysburg Foundation. Volunteers are needed year-round and serve in a variety of capacities including:
In addition to ongoing visitor activities, the Gettysburg Foundation also sponsors Volunteer Workday, an entire day devoted to service on the battlefield. Held the first Saturday in June, members and guests from across the country work alongside the National Park Service employees on a variety of battlefield projects. Some recent projects include, painting historic structures, rebuilding fence lines, and cleaning headstones in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.
