MayThe Getty Villa

By George Widman

When planning for the construction of the Getty Villa in the 1970s, architects looked closely at the partial excavation of the Villa dei Papyri (papyruses) and at other ancient Roman houses in Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae to influence the design. The Villa gardens of Julius Caesar’s father-in-law were designed in terraces to give varied and pleasant views of the Bay of Naples, not unlike those of the Getty Villa’s Malibu coast.

The palatial Villa dei Papyri, along with all of Herculaneum and Pompei, were buried in volcanic ash and mud during the massive eruption of Mt. Vesuvius volcano in 79 A.D. While the destructive force of the volcano caused much damage, the ash and mud entombed the region and preserved much of the architecture, art and everyday articles used by the unfortunate victims of the disaster.

The Getty Villa displays Greek, Roman and Etruscan artifacts within the Villa and gardens. A just-completed renovation of the Villa reorganizes the collection and its new additions expand the display space, and show the collection in chronological order, rather than by historical themes as before.

Our club visited the Villa several years ago—but with a just completed renovation the museum has increased the size of some galleries and added many more antiquities. The collection spans 7,000 years of ancient art from the Stone Age to the fall of the Roman Empire.

The Getty Villa is surrounded by four tranquil gardens featuring arbors, fountains and reflecting ponds that are inspired by ancient Roman models and planted with species known to be from the Mediterranean.Self-guided tours, public tours and a smaller private tour for 30 will be offered. The private tour will be arranged at the Villa and is open to the first 30 members wishing to join the tour.

Pre-ordered box lunches will be available from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Please check your preference below and submit payment with your RSVP. Lunch on your own is also available: The Getty offers café dining. Admission is free but a parking fee of $15 is collected on your entry. Please tell the kiosk attendant that you are with the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club. We have reserved secure parking for our club members.

Please join us as we explore the “re-imagined” and fabulous Getty Villa on Saturday, May 19th.

The Cover StoryBy Greg Gill

73 HG is a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, long wheelbase Saloon Limousine with division that was delivered to Connaught Motor and Carriage Co. Ltd. London on 2/16/23 and to the original owner Mr. A.R. Peck Esq. on 6/15/23. Rolls-Royce factory records show Connaught Motor and Carriage erected 4 Silver Ghost bodies in 1911, 1920, 1922, and 1923. An article in AutoCar magazine, reprinted in the “Rolls-Royce in the Twenties” publication, features a 1926 Rolls-Royce PI “Berkeley” enclosed limousine built by the Connaught Motor and Carriage Co., which is striking like my 1923 Ghost. “The design has many unusual features, chief being the method adopted to attach the panels to the framework by lapping the metal around the wooden frame and fastening it on the inside, great care being taken to avoid even these fastenings being visible. “The design is that the pillars are curved, not straight, which as the panels conform, eliminates the box-like severity of outline that is so often noticed and imparts an air of dignity and elegance.” “The roof is specially constructed with a panel in the center to obviate drumming. The interior finish, particularly the polished wood detail work, of the body is beautifully carried out and the upholstery is both deep and very comfortable.” My Ghost has individual reclining rear seats and is extremely comfortable. 73 HG next shows up on the Factory Ownership Warranty cards to a Mr. Charles F. Edwards, Oakland CA 8/12/31, and then to Mr. J. J. Leland Esq. in San Jose CA 10/25/51. The Rolls-Royce factory records stop there. I found a couple of old vehicle ID cards in the back of the car and an AACA Foothills Region show card showing the ownership to Fred Woods of Portola Valley, San Mateo County. The last California registration is 1976, but we also found a DMV special moving permit from the Redwood City DMV dated 1989. The Ghost then appeared for sale in Nipomo California (south of Pismo Beach). I acquired the car in August of 2015, as I had been looking for a large enclosed Ghost for touring, because my 1924 RR Silver Ghost is a Piccadilly Roadster and is a bit tight on long rallies and has limited luggage space for some of the extended SGA and RREC tours. HG 73 was exactly what I was looking for.

She barely ran and hadn’t been driven since 1976 (40 yrs. of sitting). Fortunately, she was in a garage in the Central Coast of California and there is zero rust on the chassis or body. The doors and hardware are all tight and close beautifully. I love original old motor cars and I was determined to keep 73 HG as original as possible. My dear friend Tom Burniston and I got her running, barely, and with the help of Steve Littin in Ohio, Ghost ignition and engine parts started arriving. 73 HG had been in a serious accident many years ago and the front axle had been replaced with a non-Rolls-Royce axle (later discovered to be a pre-WWI Mercedes Benz axel, but that’s a story for another day). I fortunately have a hoard of Rolls-Royce R parts and had a proper Ghost front axle. However, the front dumb irons were bent and about 1.5 inches off center. We heated and straightened the chassis, replaced broken front springs (thanks to Dr. David Morrison), fitted all new spring pins and bushings, repaired a damaged rear spring hanger, installed a new steering cross tube and missing front shock absorbers and shock links. The rear shock mounts were also broken and had been replaced with modern tube shocks, which broke the mounting brackets. I had a pair of excellent original friction shocks and she rides beautifully now.

She needed a complete electrical rewire. The front headlights had been modified to sealed beam units and I had to find and replace the reflectors, trim rings, adjustment mechanisms, etc. The running boards had been shattered in the accident and replaced with cheap plywood and screen door aluminum trim. The spare tire side-mount brackets also had been damaged: all of this was repaired and fabricated. The alloy spare tire wells in the running boards were damaged beyond repair and had to be recast. All of the window glass was old, dangerous original plate glass and it was all replaced with safety glass. All door window mechanisms were refitted and repaired. The front leather upholstery was in tatters and beyond saving so it was replaced, after an extensive search, with matching leather with the proper heavy grain pattern. The rear West of England wool upholstery was a bit moth-eaten but too good to replace so slip covers protect it. We designed and fabricated period-correct running boards, incorporating tool boxes, as I enjoy touring, with the result that spare parts and tools are conveniently located. A large storage area under the front seats is also full of tools and goodies, as is a large tool tray under the rear floor boards where the jack, hub tools and other heavy equipment is stored; easy to access, and out of the way. Fortunately the car came with an amazing assortment of original factory tools that were supplemented from my annual trips to the Beaulieu Autojumble and Hershey. I have a complete set of Ghost tools in the correct leather tool roll for the car.

THE COVER STORY Continued from Page 4

The engine eventually ran well and the oil pressure was 19 lbs., just as on the original engine factory test sheets in 1922. However, she burned a lot of oil. I took her on the Death Valley SGA tour and realized I needed to pull the engine blocks and see what was causing the problem. The engine had never been apart, the bores were worn and the original pistons and oil return passages were completely clogged with carbon. So, we shipped the engine blocks off to Steve Littin in Ohio for all new valve guides, valves, rebore and new high compression pistons. Tom and I reassembled the engine and it runs perfectly and with a noticeable increase in power due to the new high compression pistons.

The magneto was original and had never been overhauled, Mark at Mark’s Magneto Service was impressed with the condition and the rebuild was straightforward and it works beautifully. The original thermostat cleaned up and works perfectly. The original exhaust muffler and exhaust cutout work perfectly and, with the welding up of a few pinholes, works and sounds like a proper Rolls-Royce. The wire wheels were in unexpectedly good condition and Buchanan’s Wire Wheel Service replaced a few spokes, but they were true and rust free. However, the tires were so old and the spares were petrified, literally. The “rubber” shattered like glass when hit with a sledgehammer which is what it took along with a Sawzall to cut the bead and get the tires off the rims. Once cleaned and powder coated, new tubes, flaps and tires went back on with the split rims in minutes. We set up the “new” front end as per the specs in the Rolls-Royce manual and with the chassis straight and the front springs refurbished, the old girl goes down the road straight as an arrow and the steering is perfect. The brightwork was cleaned and polished, the paint work spotted in on the fenders where needed and the fabric top insert replaced with proper padding and trim and is now watertight. 73 HG runs like a top and with the addition of a Gear vendors overdrive she can cruise at 60-65 MPH on the freeway and keep up with modern traffic. I drive 73 HG on a regular basis and she’s a delight on the road and comfortable on tour. Even loaded up with all the luggage, there is still plenty of room for family and friends. The sense of accomplishment of putting one of these old treasures back on the road and sharing it with kindred spirits is tremendous. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be 73 HG’s caretaker for this next phase of her long career. She was 95 years old February 16th, 2018.

The Nethercutt CollectionBy Rick Carron

The Nethercutt Collection is located in Sylmar, California. Its centerpiece is its automobile collection, which Autoweek calls one of America’s five greatest automobile museums.

We gathered in the parking lot and were treated to coffee and donuts by our great hosts, Sue Gesler and Russell Prouse. Once everyone had arrived and enjoyed their treats we entered the wonderful and eclectic world of the Nethercutt.

The Nethercutt Collection was founded in 1972 by longtime RROC So-Cal member J. B. Nethercutt (1913–2004), who was the co-founder of Merle Norman Cosmetics. The business continues to thrive and its factory is located adjacent to the museum complex. The Nethercutt contains an incredible collection of more than 250 classic cars dating back to the earliest days of automotive greatness. It is a fascinating collection of mechanical musical instruments including orchestrions that replicate complete orchestras --and a thousand hood ornaments.

These priceless treasures are housed in a palatial space that replicates an automotive showroom of long ago. Amazingly, all the motor cars are driven regularly and the musical devices play loudly and flawlessly. Of significant note is a lineup of Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts, Phantoms I through VI, Silver Wraiths and a Standard Steel Silver Cloud arranged chronologically to demonstrate design evolution. Awesome! In the “back yard” there is a rare Hudson Class steam locomotive built in 1937, along with a restored 1912 Pullman private train car. This car was ordered by Lucky Baldwin and was the preferred mode of travel by the billionaire class of that time. This was prior to the advent of Gulf Stream and Lear jets.

Our extensive tour was led by Lori Thornhill, assisted by her fellow docents and RROC So-Cal members Howard Green and Bill Cronkhite, to whom we extend our gratitude and thanks for a job well done.

The grand finale of our tour was when Bill Cronkhite “fired up” the third largest theater pipe organ in the whole world and played “The Phantom of the Opera”, albeit electronically generated. The immense and rich sound of that gigantic, vintage contraption shook its palatial habitat, and rattled our bones.

Many thanks to to Sandra Horowitzfor sharing her beautiful photos

of the Nethercutt Museum!

The Miniature Engineering Museum

Willy Hugron is hosting us on June 16th for a trip to the Joe Martin Foundation Craftsmanship Museum, which is also known as the Craftmanship Museum and the Miniature Engineering Museum. It is located in Carlsbad, California. The museum collects and displays unique, carefully crafted objects of metal and wood.

The Craftsmanship Museum first opened in 1996 as an online museum by Joe Martin, owner of the Sherline Company. In 2006, Joe opened a physical museum at the Sherline factory in Vista California. Within four years, the museum outgrew their factory home

and Joe decided to create the Joe Martin foundation to purchase a 16,000 square foot building in the Raceway industrial park as a permanent home for the Museum in Carlsbad, just a couple miles from the Sherline factory. Over the years the Museum has expanded its collection of exhibits to include hundreds of working models of all types of miniature machines, engines, architecture, automobiles, and airplanes as well as one-off unique articles of miniature engineering craftsmanship such as a 0.010” diameter bolt with matching nut.

The collection includes approximately 500 working miniature engines as well as models of aircraft, automobiles, and other objects. Especially notable are a 1/6 scale model of a 1932 Duesenberg and several aluminum cutaway World War II fighter models. A Norden bombsight is displayed in the museum’s collection.

Louse Chenot constructed a 1/6-scale model of a 1932 SJ Duesenberg. Construction required about 15,000 hours. The engine runs on gasoline. Doors close with two clicks; outside and inside handles operate independently. The model is fully operational, an automobile in miniature. This is one of the many delights that the Museum holds.

The museum houses a precision machine shop staffed by volunteer master toolmakers. The museum’s toolmakers work collaboratively with craftsmen throughout the world building miniature projects. They clean, restore, repair and maintain the objects donated or loaned to the museum.

Plan on joining us for a trip to this fascinating museum. You probably have never seen anything like it!
