Getting startedWelcome to Certificate Mathematics in Action Online Self-Study and Assessment Centre (SAC). Whether you are a teacher trying to analyse your students’ capability for certain mathematical concepts or you are a student who wishes to drill yourself in solving mathematical problems, SAC provides all necessary tools to fulfill your needs (fig.1). In particular, students can understand their strengths and weaknesses through their practices in the self-study corner.

This guide is mainly divided into two parts. Part one is designed to help teachers in building an assessment and analysing their students’ performances. Part two is designed to help SAC administrators of the schools to maintain the database of the teachers and view the databases of the classes and the students.

How to obtain SAC login informationUsers must acquire their user names and passwords before they can access SAC. The instruction for downloading SAC user accounts will be mailed to your school at the beginning of each school year. It will guide you to download Excel files containing login information for administrators, teachers and students.

SAC administrators at your school may also create or update accounts for teachers. Please refer to pp.19 - 24 for detail.

Part ONE
Welcome to SACYour computer has to be connected to the Internet before you can access SAC. Open Internet Explorer and type http://sac.certmaths.ilongman.com in the URL field. Choose English for the interface of SAC (fig.4).
Click Teachers on the main interface (fig.5). Type your user name and your password in the corresponding fields (fig.6). Click ‘Submit’ and log into SAC.

You should choose an easy-to-remember password. Passwords that can be easily guessed or cracked using password crackers should not be used. See p.16 to learn how you can change your password.

tips If you have forgotten your password, type your user name and click ‘Forgot password’. The password will be sent to your email account registered in SAC.

Getting familiar with the interfaceYou will see the screen as shown in fig.7 after you have logged into the system as a teacher. SAC has provided all necessary tools for a teacher to assess his/her students. Click the tabs (fig.8) on the toolbar to access the various functions of SAC.

Please remember to logout the system to end your working session.

Test managementBy default, you will enter ‘Test management’ page after you have logged into SAC as a teacher. Fig.9 shows the interface and the function accessible on this page.

Adding a test
Click ‘Add Test’ and proceed to ‘Add test’ page (fig.10). Select the classes that are ready for the test. Then, set the period in which the test is available for the specified classes. Next, input the time for the test. Finally, choose a

ready-made test provided by SAC. (fig.11).

Choosing a testChoose a test from the table by clicking the radio button in front of the name of each test (fig.12). You can choose only one paper each time. Click ‘Add test’ button to assign the test to the specified classes.
Modifying a test
After you have assigned a test to the students, you can change the preferences of the tests if necessary. To do so, click the name of the test on the ‘Test management’ page and enter the ‘Update test’ page (fig.13).

tips You will see a warning message if the test selected has been already assigned to the specified class(es).

On this page, you can change the classes of students who are going to take the test. You can also modify the period in which the test is available to the students. You may also allow the students to view their test results and the detailed solution for the test.
Allow students to view the resultYou can allow your students to view the test results and solutions online. Select the classes in the ‘Allow view result’ row (fig.14). Finally, click ‘Update test’ to save the preference for the test.

Removing a test
In case you want to remove the tests assigned, check the check box in front of the name of the test and click ‘Remove test’. After you have confirmed the removal, the selected tests will no longer be available to the students.
Downloading test paper
On ‘Test management’ page, you can choose downloading the test paper or the detailed solution. Click the download button and choose ‘Save’ in the dialog popped up to save the document (fig.15).

tips To select all tests at once, check the check box at the top left corner. Click ‘Remove test’ to remove all the tests shown in the table.

Test logClick ‘Test log’ on the toolbar and proceed to ‘Test log’ page (fig.16). On this page, you can view the results and analysis of the students in a test.

Remind students
You can remind your students the deadline of the test assigned. On ‘Test log’ page, click ‘Remind student’. Choose a method to inform your students from the dialog popped up (fig.17). Click ‘Send’ and messages will be sent to the students who have not completed the test.

View results and analysis
After the students have completed the test, SAC will update the test results and automatically analyse the performance of the students.
Result generated by studentBy default, the result generated is by student. If not, click the button in the ‘order by’ combo box. Select ‘Generated By Student’. The screen will automatically refresh and shows the results and analysis generated by student (fig.18).

Result and analysis of a particular studentYou can look up the result and the performance analysis of each student. Click ‘Look up’ and proceed to ‘View result in details’ page (fig.20).

Export Students’ resultsYou can export the results of all students. On ‘Test log’ page, click ‘Export’ and export the result summary of the class. Click ‘Export All Students’ and export the detailed results of all students.

Student databaseYou can view the data of the students online or export the data to common file formats. Click ‘Student database’ tab and proceed to ‘Student database’ page (fig.21).

Exporting students’ data
Click ‘Export data’. On the next page (fig.22), set the preference how you export the data. Select the fields of data, the classes and the file format being exported. Finally, click ‘Export data’ and choose ‘Save’ in the dialog popped up (fig.23).

Send e-mailYou can send e-mail messages to your SAC administrator, other teachers registered in SAC database and your students. Click ‘Send e-mail’ tab on the toolbar. In the screen as shown in fig.24, select the receivers, type the subject and the content in the text fields provided. Finally, click ‘Send’ to deliver the mail to the receivers.

tips You can preview the mail by clicking ‘Preview’ before the mail is sent.

Messages to your studentsBesides sending email, SAC allows you to send messages to your students. Click ‘Message to student’ on the toolbar. On the next page (fig.25), you can send a message, view the messages sent to your students or remove the message history.

Sending messagesClick ‘Add message’ and proceed to the next page (fig.26). Select the receivers. Then, type the subject and the content of the message. Finally, click ‘Post’ to send the message to the specified students.

Removing message historyOn ‘Message to student’ page, check the check box in front of the name of each message. Click ‘Remove message’ to remove the selected message.
Changing your passwordTo change your password, click ‘Change your password’ on the toolbar. Enter you old password and your new password in the fields provided. Finally, click ‘Submit’. New password will be effective immediately after you have received a confirm message from the system (fig.27).

note Passwords are case-sensitive. Please note whether the Caps Lock is on or off when you type your password.

Paper managementClick ‘Paper management’ tab and open ‘Paper management’ page (fig.28). Then click a chapter on the leftmost column to proceed to next page.
Viewing an existing paper
On the next page, you will see a table showing the papers available for the chapter (fig.29). Click the name of an assessment on the leftmost column to view the paper.

Part TWO
SAC administrators can maintain the database using Internet browsers. Open Internet Explorer and type http://sac.certmaths.ilongman.com in the URL field. Choose English for the interface and then select SAC administrator login. Input your user name and your password in the fields provided (fig.30). You will see the screen as shown in fig.31 after you have successfully logged into the system. Click the tabs on the top of the screen (fig.32) to access various functions of the SAC.

Managing the databasesClass database
You will enter the ‘class database’ page (fig.33) by default after you have logged into the system as an administrator. On this page, you can view forms and classes in the database. If you want to add/modify the class database of your school, please contact our technical support (see p.25) or contact your Longman sales representative.

Teacher database
SAC administrators can change the information of the teachers. Click ‘Teacher database’ tab and proceed to ‘Teacher database’ page (fig.34).

Import teachersSAC provides the capability of importing teacher accounts. Click ‘Import teachers’ and proceed to ‘Import teachers’ page (fig.35). Click ‘Browse’ and select the file for import. Click ‘Submit’ and the teacher accounts will be imported immediately (fig.36).

note In case of error occurs, a message will be shown on the screen. The invalid rows of data will be rejected while the valid ones would still be imported to the database.

Add teacher accountAdministrator can create one teacher account each time. Click ‘Add teacher account’ and proceed. On the next page, fill the information in the fields provided (fig.37). Finally, click ‘Submit’ and the teacher account will be created.

Update teacher accountAdministrator can help a particular teacher to update his/her information including his/her name, class, user name, password and e-mail address. Click the name of the teacher in the table and enter ‘Update teacher’ page. Fill the fields provided. Finally, click ‘Submit’ and the information of the teacher will be updated immediately.

tips You can select more than one classes by holding ‘Ctrl’ and click the class in the class list.

Remove teacher accountSelect the teachers to be removed by checking the check box in front of the names of the teachers (fig.38). Click ‘Remove teacher account’. Click ‘Yes’ in the dialog popped up and the selected accounts will be removed immediately.
Change teacher passwordAdministrators can help teachers to change their passwords without knowing their old ones. Click ‘Change teacher password’. On the next page, select the teachers who need to change their passwords. Enter the passwords in the fields provided. Finally, click ‘Submit’ and the new password will be effective immediately.

Send e-mailAdministrators can send an e-mail to the teachers through SAC. Click ‘Send e-mail’. On the next page (fig.39), select the receivers first. Then, type the subject and the content in the text fields provided. Finally, click ‘Send’ to deliver your mail.

Export dataAdministrators can export teachers’ information in Microsoft® Word (rtf) or Excel (csv) format. Click ‘Export data’ and proceed to ‘Export data’ page. Select the fields of data and the file format to be exported (fig.40). Finally, click ‘Submit’ and choose ‘Open’ or ‘Save’ in the dialog popped up.

Student database
SAC administrators can view the information of the students. Click ‘Student database’ and enter ‘Student database’ page (fig.41).

Change class passwordAdministrators can help a class of students to change their passwords without knowing their old ones. Click ‘Change class password’. On the next page, select the classes of student that need to change their passwords. Enter the password in the fields provided (fig.42). Finally, click ‘Submit’ and the password will be effective immediately.
