The Gift of Reading And The Faith By Pastor Nathan
I am proud to announce the
groundbreaking for a new and improved
version of the library named after my
grandmother, Leanna Hicks. The
groundbreaking took place on Saturday,
July 20, 2019. Mrs. Hicks is my mother’s
mom. She is 99 years old. Throughout
her life she emphasized education and its
importance for reading history through a
varied lens as a means of empowerment.
Reading is indeed such a gift. Not
only for reading history, but in a whole
host of life’s areas to include health, love,
and faith. The ability to read helps us
better understand the doctor’s orders and
consume the right ingredients for our
health. Furthermore, reading fuels our
relationships. Imagine not being able to
read the words of a text from a loved one.
The ability to read is a tool to
enhance worship. Reading allows us
to engage Scripture in personal and
public ways. Reading is a gift.
Libraries are a playground for this
gift. So, I use this groundbreaking as
an opportunity to celebrate reading.
It is fundamental, as the old commercial
used to say.
My grandmother, Leanna, holds
degrees in journalism and social science
from the Eastern Michigan University and
Wayne State University. She has been
actively involved in her church, the
Springhill Missionary Baptist Church, for
the past 50 years. Much of her time in the
community went to improving local
libraries and preserving local history in
Inkster, Michigan. She served on various
boards to make this happen.
As I remember my grandmother’s
contributions in a country where it was
once illegal for black people to read in
many states, I celebrate the gift of reading
as a powerful tool to do justice, embrace
faithful love, and walk humbly with our
God (Micah 6.8).

Men’s Fellowship BBQ
Interfaith Shelter Network At CUPC
Some of the men of CUPC took to the grill recently to help
prepare a delicious meal for Fellowship Hour.
We have kicked off our
partnership with the San
Diego Interfaith Shelter
Network in serving and
caring for individuals and
families who are in need of
housing and work. This
summer partnership will go
on for two weeks.
Our God is a welcoming

Presbyterian Women
Scholarships
The Presbyterian Women of CUPC attended the 2019 Summer Conference titled Love Your Neighbor, which
was held at Chapman University in Orange, CA July 19---21 2019. Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Nordquist was keynote
speaker. This conference was an exciting time for Presbyterian Women as we continue to gather in the
community, grow in faith and remain responsive to the needs of our communities. PWS SoCal and Hawaii
continue to be at the forefront of a diverse time in history; confronting a time of many changes and challenges
and they are meeting them during a time of larger nationwide and global transformation. Presbyterian
Women's 2019 Summer Conference is an exciting space in which hands—on mission ,prayerful restoration,
resource, Bible study, fellowship, and worship are all gathered during a weekend. We continue to meet and
slate inspired speakers together during plenaries and breakout sessions to ensure Presbyterian Women
continue to live out our Purpose.
There were many Breakout Sessions. We chose these six A) Love Carved in Stone: A Workshop for Leaders.
This introduced us to the upcoming Bible Study, “A Fresh look at the Ten Commandments.” B) Making Our
Work Against Racism and Sexism in the Church and World Inclusive and Caring. C) Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance: Presence and Versatility in Times of Crisis D) The Story of Adam & Eve in the Quran and the
Bible E) Immigration and the Church: Become a Voice
for Change F) What We Can Learn from Our African
Sisters
What an exciting experience.
