Getting to know Taiwan

Through introducing a strange country, Taiwan, you can get some concepts about Taiwan’s general information, famous places, culture, and art before the next activity comes. The goal of the class is to help you understanding Taiwan, and then you can get some ideas for the next activity, Webquest.

Main language: Mandarin Chinese, Min-nan.

Geography: Island (off the southeastern coast of mainland Asia)

1. Northeast Coast National Scenic Area -Its coastline runs 66 kilometers.

2. East Coast National Scenic Area -A river runs from east mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

3. East Rift Valley National Scenic Area (Rivers are the main characteristic.)

-North Valley: There are farms, forests, and aboriginal cultural sites.

-Central Valley: The main feature is rural villages.

-South Valley: Divided into three main areas by rivers.

(1) Chishang/ Guanshan/ Southern Cross-Island Highway.

(2) Luye/ Yanping

(3) Beinan

1. Yangmingshan National Park

-The area: 28400 hectare.

-A lots of various plants and animals.

-The renown: the wealth of unusual volcanic features and topography.

2. Yushan National Park

-The area: 105,4908 hectare.

-Cover three mountains, Nantou Hsien, Chayi Hsien, Kaoshan Hsien and

Hualien Hsien.

-The main economical resource for local people is forests.

-The area of biological reserve occupies 70520.9 ha.

3. Kinmen National Park

-The area: 3720 hectare.

-Include five areas: Mt. Taiwu, Kuningtou, Kukang, Mashan Hill and Liehyu.

-Underwent many representable wars.

-The first national park of historic-war reserve , cultural and biological reserve.
