New electronic ordering for medical imaging and pathology in the ieMR will be introduced to Children’s Health Queensland from 5 October, along with electronic appointments for the Child Development Program. To get ready for go-live, a number of wards have started issuing the new printed ID wristbands to patients, including the teams in 4b and 4c. The two wards are setting the gold standard for getting ready with more then 80 per cent of staff already trained. Jill Porter, Clinical Nurse and one of the ieMR Clinical Practice Leads from the level 4 Surgical Admissions Lounge, said there was a real buzz of anticipation for the switch to real time electronic orders. Practising with training devices and using the barcoded wristbands ahead of go-live has allowed the team to familiarise themselves with the new workflows. While the team is not placing real orders via the ieMR just yet, being able to step through the process and get used to printing wristbands is helping to reassure everyone adapting to the change is not going to be a big deal. In fact, the success of the practice sessions inspired the team to stage an early ‘dress rehearsal’, which timed nicely with the farewell of a team member.

Child Development Program will be the first CHQ service to benefit from the introduction of Enterprise Scheduling Management (ESM). From 17 October, referrals will be entered and appointments scheduled electronically. This will result in streamlined processes and visibility of client appointments across all CDP sites.

Training started in early September with staff learning how to use the central system to integrate patient referrals with the electronic medical record.

“I love the colour coded appointment slots that let us know if the clients have confirmed appointments, checked-in, checked out, cancelled or failed to attend.” – Nerida, Occupational Therapist, North Lakes

“It is an exciting time for our service and the change management team and trainers have been wonderful.” – Shareen, Speech Pathologist, Wynnum

During planned and unplanned ieMR downtime staff will be able to view and print patient information from ieMR records accessed within the past 30 days, except scanned images.

Dedicated downtime viewers connected to essential power (red power outlet) have been installed in 18 carefully selected LCCH clinical locations.

A downtime viewer is a fixed computer hard drive, turned on via a switch on the desk, that uses the screen, keyboard and mouse of an existing computer.

Nurse team leaders will be responsible for managing the activation of downtime procedures in their work area, including the use of a sealed downtime kit with essential paper based forms, tools and instructions required to maintain services.

Second nature now

It was about this time last year when the 6,000 staff at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) were feeling a little anxious ahead of their big ieMR go-live.

Dr Rob Roan, who works at the PAH and in our ED, remembers the challenge of getting ready.

He said his PAH experience taught him there was no reason to be nervous and encouraged staff to put the time into training, some practice, looking at the website resources and to ask for help during go-live.

Within two weeks the new ways of working at the PAH were embedded and quickly became second nature, said Dr Roan.

The best way to understand how the ieMR changes will affect the way you work is to take part in your work area dress rehearsal.

Get your training done early so you can confidently test your knowledge with your colleagues in a mock dress rehearsal, which for OERR will include the new wristbands, scanners and label printers.

Talk with your line manager or Clinical Practice Lead about planning your dress rehearsal or to book the ieMR team for an additional tailored training session.

Look out for the roving simulation lab and computers located in major work areas so you can practise in your own time, with assistance from your NUM, line manager, Clinical Practice Lead or training staff.
