Major Marketing Themes of Wax and Protection in Car Wash• 1960s: Hot waxes• 1970s: Foam polishes and sealar waxes• 1980s: Pressure waxes and glaze• 1990s: Triple foam conditioners and polishes• 2005: Rain-X online, total body protectants (30-day wax
effect guaranty), Teflon coating • 2011: Hot Lava Waxes (spray bar of big bubbles with
carnauba wax)• 2019: Ceramic sealants and coatings (indicating silica type
of ceramics in durability)

Gimmicks in the marketing in car washes• Totally different chemical components from detailing• Mixed up hand applied waxes with auto spray arms in car washes• Wrong impression of chemical concentrations• Videos (e.g. on YouTube) to generate wrong impressions• Projected a higher value or durability with “borrowed” names (Ceramic, Teflon, Diamond, Nano, Glass)

Definition of Ceramic Coating• Definition in Detailing: Originated from a high temperature inorganic fusion, Ceramic Coating in
detailing is a liquid polymer originated from silica and titanium oxides that is applied by hand to the exterior of a vehicle. The coating chemically bonds with the vehicle’s factory paint, creating a layer of protection that is hydrophobic in nature and forms a nano-ceramic shield above the vehicle’s clear coat.
• This protective shield provides durable protection from common environmental contaminants including insect acids, road salt, bird droppings, oxidation, swirling, minor scratches and helps protect the vehicle from the damaging rays of the sun. It’s these properties, along with the hydrophobicity, that separates ceramic coatings from waxes or sealants.
• Silicones can trace their sources to silica or sand, and that is why people consider silicone and reactive silicone “ceramic”, and call it SiO2, silica or glass enhanced to project hardness and durability.

Ceramic Sealants in Car Wash vs. Ceramic Coatings in DetailingCeramic Coatings in Detailing
• Reactive siloxanes, silicones, mineral oils, mineral spirits, organic solvents, and maybe other polymers like acrylics, hydrocarbon waxes, Carnauba waxes
• Solvent based, insoluble in water• Relies on chemical reaction to bond polymers
to vehicle surface without emulsifier• Applied by trigger spraying and hand wiping• Uses AS IS at high concentration (10-40%
active) to leave a thick coating on surface• Durability: 3-6 months• Cost: $300-2000/car
Ceramic Sealants in Car Washes• Water soluble silicone quats, alkoxylated
silicones, etherized silicones, silicone emulsions, cationic emulsifiers, MSO and other water-soluble polymers (acrylic, olefin, fluoro, cellulose)
• Water soluble or oil-in-water microemulsions• No chemical reaction occurs but relies on cationic
emulsifiers to adhere on substrate• Applied by a spray bar or arm in car washes• Very thin layer after being diluted with water for
50-150:1 (0.05-0.1% or less)• Durability: 30 days• Cost: $3-6/car

How to Generate “Ceramic” Effect
CONFIDENTIAL USE ONLY 8
Key Components in Creating Ceramic Sealants• Water soluble silicone wax additives (functionalized silicones) or/and amino silicones• Cationic emulsifiers to help stabilize silicone in water-based formulas and to help bond
on vehicle surface• MSO and other waxes like hydrocarbon waxes to speed up water breaking• Other water-soluble polymers to improve wax build-up, water-repellence, and
durability (acrylics, urethanes, urea, nitrocellulose)• Create microemulsion that is stable through dilution and application

SummaryCeramic Sealant marketed in car washes is totally different from Ceramic Coating marketed in detailing in several aspects• Chemistries, especially in silicones used, no SiO2 or glass or sand infusion or reinforcement • No chemical bonding reactions, but relying on electric charge of emulsifiers to bring to surface• Applied concentrations are very low• Sprayed after being diluted with a lot of water via spraying bar/arm (versus hand applied in Detailing)• Not as durable as in Detailing. In general, 30 days wax effect is guaranteed (3 to 6 months in Detailing) • Non-reactive silicones, and particularly silicone quats like ColaDry QS100 and ColaDry DAB, and possibly
amino silicone are main contributors to wax effects and water repellence• Other polymers like acrylics, olefins, fluoropolymer, Carnauba Wax, cellulose, urethane/urea are possibly utilized
but not main contributors to the water repellence and beading • Cationic emulsifiers like ColaMulse CS400 and ColaMulse HP500 are needed to create boding to paints
