GETTING INVOLVED
IN PubLIc INquIrIEs
Legislative Assembly for the ACT
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
Written submissions: The best way to get
your views considered by the committee is
to prepare a written submission. There is no
set ormat or a submission but it is impor tant
that the content addresses one or more o the
terms o reerence. A comprehensive guide
to preparing a submission is available rom
the committee ofce or on the Legislative
Assembly website.
Appearing at a public hearing: Once
submissions have been received the
committee will usually hold a public hearing to
take oral evidence. The committee may invite
some people to appear beore the committee
to ask them urther questions about their
submissions.
Attending a public orum: From time to
time a committee may hold a public orum to
inorm or consult with community members.
Community Organisations: Committees
work closely with groups and organisations
representing community views. You can also
talk to them about getting involved in public
inquiries.
ACT ASSEMBLY COMMITTEES
Seven standing committees conduct public
inquiries. They currently are:

Select committees are established rom time totime or specifc inquiries.

FOR THE PEOPLE
The Legislative Assembly serves the people
o the ACT. Much o the detailed work o the
Assembly is done by committees, made up o
members o the Legislative Assembly. A major
part o committee work is conducting inquiries
into public policy issues or public administration.
Committee inquiries provide an opportunity orcommunity members to have their say on the
issues that impact on the lives o people living
in the ACT.
COMMITTEE INQUIRIES
Subjects or inquiries can be reerred to a
committee by the Assembly when there is a
lot o community concern about a particular
issue or when community views are sought
on a particular subject. Committees can also
sel reer inquiries on matters they consider
to be o public importance or matters that
have been raised with them by constituents.
It is important or committees to hear rom
individuals, experts in the feld, representatives
o groups and organisations, as well as
government departments.

COMMITTEE REPORT
Once the fnal report or an inquiry is tabled in
the Assembly everyone who contributed to the
inquiry will be notifed. Reports are available
on the website and copies are available rom
the Committee Ofce.
Each committee has a dedicated
secretary that can provide you with
assistance to participate in an inquiry
