WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INSTALLING CHARGERS?

The number of electric vehicles on the roads is growing every month, and with it are the numbers of drivers looking for access to chargers.

Whether you are installing your company’s first EV charger or looking to expand your current charger offerings, the availability of EV chargers in your company benefits everyone.

• Your EV-owning employees will be happy tohave another location they can charge every day.Happy employees = better employees.

• Prospective employees will have another reasonto come on board.

• With one simple move, you’ll position yourcompany as employee-focused, forward-

thinking and environmentally conscious. In other words: cool.

CISCOSince 2011 Cisco has committed to promoting the use of electric vehicles among their

employees and guests by providing them with free charging of their EV cars on their

campuses.

Cisco installed their first electric vehicle charging station in 2011, and by early 2014 they had

installed over 120 Level 2 charging stations across nine of their campuses worldwide. In 2014,

Cisco has looked to expand their charging options by expanding to Level 3 DC Fast Chargers

to help provide their employees more charging options. “As we have expanded our EV

charging services, covering more buildings and employees, it was important to start offering

EV drivers different ways to charge that might fit better into the work schedules on a given day

and further reducing concerns about having enough charge for their commute,” comments Ali

Ahmed, manager of Cisco’s Global Energy Management and Sustainability team.

By providing free EV charging as a service to their employees, Cisco is increasing employee

engagement and supporting recruiting activities in a way that aligns with their environmental

sustainability principles.

When proceeding with the installation of an EV charger, there are a few things you should consider before you get started:

Assess the office property. Do you share your office

space with other companies? Does your parking lot have

assigned parking spaces or is there a common area where

an EV charger can be placed?

Locate the electrical panels. How close are parking

areas to existing electrical panels? Having chargers

located in close proximity to existing electrical services

generally reduces the amount of installation work needed.

Talk to the installation company. A local installer or

electrical contractor should perform a site assessment and

provide you with installation options and other potential

impacts.

Consider the operating cost. Annually, the costs of an EV

charger are generally low. Is this something that employees

or users of the charger can help contribute to?

Talk to your utility. They can give you the latest information

about rebates, incentives and maybe even tips on how to

keep your electricity costs low.

WHICH CHARGER MIGHT BE RIGHT FOR YOU?Whether you’re a small business or large corporation, there are a few different levels of chargers that are available to suit the needs of your company and your employees.

LEVEL 2 CHARGER Provides approximately five times the charging power over Level 1, decreasing the typical full-charge time, depending on the vehicle. Level 2 chargers typically require the installation of wall-mounted chargers and a dedicated circuit, but it is the perfect charger for workplaces with multiple EV vehicles that require a shared charger.

LEVEL 1 CHARGER If you have existing electrical outlets, this is the easiest and most basic type of charging you could provide. Level 1 charging is a great start to getting your workplace EV ready, but not ideal for companies with multiple EV vehicles that require shared chargers like Level 2 (see below).

DC QUICK CHARGER An off-board device that connects directly to a vehicle’s high-voltage battery, allowing for high-power transfer that can typically charge to 80% in under 30 minutes. This type of charger should be considered if you have, or anticipate having, multiple EV drivers in your company, or cannot install multiple Level 2 chargers.
