Happy Spring!

“Community is about doing something together that makes belonging matter.” - Brian Soks

As the season changes, brown and gray colors are transforming into different hues. The warmth brings us out of our homes where we are able to better connect in person. As you read this, I am probably out on my bike, weather permitting, enjoying the warmth, greeting neighbors and celebrating the season.

For our neighborhood, spring signals a new season to get things done. With so much to do, it creates new opportunities for collaboration and success.

We have found that by working together, we are able to put our diverse thoughts together and create new and innovative ways of doing things. For instance, take the 2019 Holiday Home Tour Weekend. It was done differently, and the weekend event gave us a new model that we would like to continue next year.

A special thank you to neighbors Alan Brown and Anne Sempowski Ward, who challenged us to become more philanthropic in 2019. We added several free events to the 2019 Holiday Home Tour Weekend, including a free youth concert, caroling and an arts and crafts event open to everyone. Also, we selected the Detroit Public Schools Foundation as a charity to receive a donation this year from money raised at that event.

We created a stronger sense of community. We built on one of the qualities that makes this a great neighborhood: Coming together to celebrate, to laugh and to appreciate the value of being neighbors. One neighbor expressed that sentiment in a note to Alan. She wrote: “Thank you for opening your home for the caroling party this weekend. What a beautiful way to celebrate the arts, build community and share some cheer! Our family had an AMAZING time. We are all still talking about it and singing songs. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU for sharing this beautiful experience.”

We welcome all comments and the one we have shared here was very special, and a great way for your Board to end 2019.

Now, with spring blossoming before us, join me, the Historic Boston-Edison Association Board and your neighbors in doing the work in our community.

Your Servant Leader,

Dianne Bostic RobinsonHBEA President

Mission Statement

The mission of the Historic Boston-Edison Association is to protect the historic character and values of our homes by:

Vision Statement

Our vision for the Boston-Edison District is that it remain a historic community that is beautiful, inclusive, and safe for neighbors and visitors.

Offering programs that support safety and community beautification; Hosting events that encourage a greater community bond among neighbors; and, Promoting culture and civic engagement for residents that live within the District and beyond.

Boston-Edison Association Visual Identity Project

As a historic community, the Historic Boston-Edison Association is committed to continuing our growth as a stable and consistent, recognizable brand. In the process of achieving this goal, the Visual Identity Committee was created to identify a professional designer through a request for proposals.

The chosen design must reflect Boston-Edison as a robust and inclusive community and its grandeur as an historic district.

Also, a survey for residents has been created to give the designer an in-depth view of residents' experiences living in our community. We want this input reflected in the design. The survey may be completed online at historicbostonedison.org/visualidentity. Hard copies can be returned by mail to Historic Boston-Edison Association – Survey, Box 02100, Detroit, MI 48202; be returned to your block captain; or dropped off at 736 Chicago Blvd.

Survey results will be available at the next general membership meeting. Thank you for your ongoing support for improving the quality of living in Boston-Edison.

Gabriel Craig & Gwendolyn Esco Davis, Co-Chair, Visual Identity Ad Hoc Committee

Holiday Home Tour Weekend in Boston Edison

In celebration of 45 years of hosting the Historic Boston-Edison Home Tour, a three-day celebration was held on December 13-15. More than 100 neighbors and friends volunteered to ensure this milestone weekend was celebrated with a bang!

More than 100 guests enjoyed an upscale progressive dinner through two beautiful homes and a surprise location during the Sapphire Anniversary Gala event on Friday, Dec. 13. Thank you to Melisa and Robert Jasper who hosted our guests at their beautiful home for appetizers and drinks. Touring their very interesting collections was a delight. Dinner was held at the beautiful home of Avery and LaJune Tabron and we thank them. The Bananas Foster added a tasty bit of flair.

A very special thank you goes to Amy Peterson and Antonio Luck, owners of The Congregation, for providing a surprise location to cap the night with dessert, drinks and dancing. This new community meeting place will be a great neighborhood addition. Although the space was still under construction at the time, it was transformed into a magical setting to end the night thanks to the hard work of the Committee.

The Detroit Public Schools Foundation will be the beneficiary of some of the funds raised. Thank you to committee members Joya Harris-Sharron, Sherryl Hinton-Scott, and Dianne Bostic Robinson for obtaining sponsorships for the Gala. Thank you to Board member Felecia Pryor and her husband, Dwight, who made a very generous personal donation and was able to obtain a matching donation from her employer, BorgWarner. Thank you to Deniera Davis, Michelle May, and Anita Gary who were able to obtain donations and negotiate lower vendor prices, thus lowering our expenses.

A special thank you to the planning committee: Chairwoman Joya Harris-Sherron, Deniera Davis, Sherryl Hinton-Scott, Michelle May, Pat Pickett, Anita Gary, and Gaye Butler. Dianne Bostic Robinson served to assist the committee. Also, thank you to the host of neighbor volunteers who served as greeters, docents, bus monitors, and in other capacities to support the evening.

The 45th Annual Holiday Home Tour, which once again had tickets sell out in less than a day, showcased five beautiful homes in our neighborhood on Sunday, December 15. Each home was adorned with a festive glow decorated for the holidays. Guests were each provided a warm welcome.

A sincere and heartfelt thank you to our home owners, without their generosity in opening their homes we could not have a Holiday Home Tour. Our homeowners: Levi Hall and Scott Teran, Monique Stanton and Cletus Nor, Estaban Miller and Mary Wright, Nathan Benedict and Brian Gomolski, LaJune and Avery Tabron.

First-Ever Holiday Serenade Event is a Hit!

More than 45 guests came to Boston-Edison to fill the neighborhood with song on Saturday, December 14, 2020. Named, “A Holiday Serenade: Voices Rising Over Boston-Edison,” this event was the first of its kind as part of the Holiday Home Tour weekend. The guests, including quite a few children, came from within the neighborhood and the larger Detroit area community. Singer Nicole Greenidge Joseph led participants in a rehearsal of five songs of the season to get them ready to fan out into the neighborhood to pre-assigned homes to serenade. Nicole also recruited 14 professional singers to assist. The results were fantastic! After the neighborhood caroling, the participants returned to the Motown Mansion pool house for a fun party complete with food, crafts and more music. The feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive — this looks to be an annual event! Thank you to the Serenade Committee: Alan Brown (who gave the event its wonderful name and opened his home for the night), Michelle May, Sherryl Hinton-Scott and Patricia Pickett. Thank you also to our volunteers Yvette Pincham-Stewart and Nancy Ross for putting together fun activities at the craft table.

The Holiday Home Tour ran smoothly without a hitch. Under the leadership of co-chairs Michael Mowers and Deniera Davis and with the support of an amazing committee, an extra hour was added to the day to accommodate an increased number of guests. This and so much more behind the scenes were made possible by this hard-working committee. Michael and Deniera extend a heartfelt congratulations and thank you to Linda Almon (Cookie Lady), Dianne Bostic Robinson, Katherine Brummel (docents), Erik Hill (concierge), Michelle May (homes), Cassi Meitl (tour guides) and Greg Sikora (graphics and registration).

A special thank you to Eleanor Oakes, Jerald Mitchell, Chris Schim, Byron Osborn, Ken Sikora, Debbie Griffith, Helen Gales, Patricia Pickett, and Jack Seavitt for their unique contributions and time committed to the Holiday Home Tour.

Our many tour guides, docents, registration assistants, cookie donors, and cookie room volunteers deserve a very special thank you. There are way too many to be named here, but know the important role you played in the success of the Holiday Home Tour.

BLOCK CLUB BUZZ

Chicago Lodgers Block Club News

A great time was had by all at the Block Club Annual Holiday Brunch. This tradition brings neighbors together for a huge buffet brunch that can last late into the afternoon.

Elections were held with Dianne Bostic Robinson elected president, Deborah Mohney as vice president, Fred Hill as treasurer, and Kristina Economy as secretary. Taking suggestions from that meeting, the officers have developed a calendar of events for the coming year. Besides dinners and our traditional activities, the planned Motor City alley clean-up will focus on the north side of the block. The block club will also be looking at supporting a charity for the coming year.

Longfellow Block Club (Woodward and Second)

New Leadership! The “Longfellas” (to coin a phrase from Frank Kong) are happy to announce the election of Sarah Hipel on November 27, 2019, as their new president. Neighbors thanked outgoing president Larry Gaines for resurrecting the block club and for his dedicated service. Larry will continue to serve the block club as an advisor.

A special thanks to Frank Kong and Colin Knapp, hosts of the very popular Hops in the Alley events, for once again going over and beyond by scaling the streetlight poles to add Christmas wreaths. Beautiful decoration of garland and ribbon were already placed by the efforts of the Boston-Edison Beautification Committee.

Thank you, Wanda and Larry Gaines for hosting the “Longfellas” on December 27, 2019 for a holiday celebration. It is an understatement to say the Gaines' holiday decorations were spectacular! Every room was adorned with the spirit of the season. However, the highlight of the event was being graced by the presence of our distinguished matriarch, Elma Peddy! Mrs. Peddy who will celebrate her 100th birthday this year and has resided on Longfellow since the 1950s.

Introducing the Voigt Park Block Club

In November the residents around Voigt Park formed a block club out of a shared interest in promoting fellowship among neighbors and stewardship of Voigt Park. The Voigt Park Block Club (VPBC) has held four meetings in which members have discussed extensively a variety of options for modifying Voigt Park. These discussions have revealed that the principal concern of VPBC is preservation of Voigt Park as a natural park. VPBC has adopted a position statement to that effect, which advocates replacing the many trees lost over the years, as well as addressing serious drainage problems and apparent deterioration of underground infrastructure. VPBC anticipates becoming an active social group as well as a strong advocacy voice for Voigt Park.

Chicago Boulevard East Block Clubs Decks the Halls for the Holidays

In an effort to have their blocks reflect the vibrancy and energy of the neighborhood, the Chicago Boulevard East Block Club (CBEBC) held its third annual holiday decorating contest in December. Residents in the four-block district from Woodward to the Lodge were encouraged to deck their home exteriors with lights, wreaths, candles and novelties to showcase what a great place the Boston-Edison neighborhood is to live and visit. All faith and cultural traditions were encouraged to participate. The winners are:

• 1st Place ($150 prize) - Ms. Sheila LaBarrie at 841 Chicago Blvd.; Marcy and Carl Hollier at 115 Chicago Blvd. • 2nd Place ($100 prize) - Tim and Kelli Shaheen at 801 Chicago Blvd. • 3rd Place ($50) - Mr. Earl Powers at 722 Chicago Blvd.; Steven and Tracy Harris at 74 Chicago Blvd.

Money for prizes was donated by a generous corporate donor. Two dozen households participated. A panel of celebrity judges traversed the neighborhood by day and night to score all participants and determine the top three winners. Special thanks to our panel of judges:

• U. S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib • WWJ Reporter Vickie Thomas • Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Chriss, Mike is Director of Corporate and Government Affairs at DTE Energy

The CBEBC has already committed to another holiday decorating contest in 2020 to continue delighting passersby and to convey that this neighborhood has a good, warm vibe and nice neighbors!

Night at the Theatre

On Sunday, November 10, 2020, Chicago Blvd. East Block Club hosted a fundraiser at the Detroit Repertory Theatre. More than 60 attendees joined the local theatre to see the world premiere of Channel Cat by Michigan Playwright, Joe Zettelmaier. It was an evening of great entertainment, champagne and some delicious food. Thanks to our generous donors, the block club will be using the proceeds of over $1,100 for future beautification and events!

Special Assessment District (SAD) Information

A Phase I SAD Ad Hoc Committee had been formed in 2017 to research and recommend next steps. In 2018, the HBEA Board formed a Phase II SAD ad-hoc committee with the purpose of educating and surveying property owners about what a SAD was and to determine if they wanted to move to an official survey to determine if they wanted to become a SAD or not. If enough howeowners want to have an official survey the Board would move to that survey. The results of that survey would then direct the Board to either let the subject die or have the Board make the official application to the City to become a SAD.

What is a Special Assessment District? The function of a SAD is to provide a means of neighborhood enhancement through increased security, snow removal, and/or mosquito abatement.

By majority rule the district would impose an additional assessment on ourselves, collected with your property taxes and then returned to the City designated Neighborhood Improvement Organization, i.e. the Historic Boston-Edison Association (HBEA). HBEA would then use those funds specifically on the services listed above or any one or two of them. The dollar amount would be determined by HBEA before it is implemented and the entire plan would have to be developed and then approved by the city.

The goals of the committee: 1) To ensure property owners will have the opportunity to make informed decisions and vote. 2) Provide information packets explaining how a SAD may impact their quality of life and pocketbooks. 3) Ensure that the process to obtain the results of the survey is transparent and understandable.

This can only be accomplished if every property owner is involved and participates in the survey and the voting process.

A survey will be mailed, emailed, and available online on or before March 1, 2020. • Sign-up sheets will be available at the community meetings for property owners to indicate how they prefer to receive the survey. • The survey will be conducted through March, with the results being tallied after March 31, 2020, on a date to be set by the HBEA board.

The HBEA Board and SAD Ad Hoc Committee are committed to transparency. More detailed information will be shared during the informational community meetings.

Additional information available at historicbostonedison.org/SAD

Below are some PROS and CONS experienced by other districts throughout the SAD process.

PROS • All district residents receive the contracted services • Additional security provided • Curb to curb snow removal (some have chosen to include sidewalk clearing) • Continuity of services throughout the district • Provides services for those who prefer not to or who are unable to perform the services themselves • Neighborhood organization is able to select contractors for services as well as the amount/level of each serviceCONS • The Special Assessment Tax is not tax deductible; it appears on the Summer Tax Bill • The City may foreclose on a property if Special Assessment Tax is not paid • No discount received on homeowners’ insurance policy • City not accountable for contracted services • Some property owners forced to cancel existing security/snow removal services in order to not double pay

Contact the Special Assessment District (SAD) Ad Hoc Committee Chair Debora Copeland at [email protected] or 313-454-6860.

Words for Thought“For what it’s worth… it’s never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you’ve never felt before. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start over again.”- F. Scott Fitzgerald
