Ribbon placings: First to sixth place in each category and one Overall Champion & Reserve Champion (The “People’s Choice” award is determined by attendees viewing the photos during the show and casting a vote for their favorite.)

Photography Contest

The Photo Contest is sponsored by the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona Amateur Committee. Judging occurs prior to displaying the photos. People’s Choice is determined by people viewing the photos during the show and casting a vote for their favorite. It is announced on the last Saturday, February 22, 2020.

Categories: Photographs taken of the Arabian Horse, or Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian, that captures the moment in the following categories: “That’s My Baby”, “Clowning Around”, “Beautiful Arabian” and “Horse and Buddy”.

Final Judging - Winners are determined by how well the entry illustrates the category, the quality and composition of the image, and presentation.

Judging - Entries are reviewed before judging to make sure the photographs meet entry requirements (see below). Judging will take place prior to the start of the show, Winners will be notified via e-mail.

People’s Choice - This award is determined after the photos are displayed. People attending the horse show vote for their favorite. The winner will be notified by e-mail The winner will receive a ribbon and recognition at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show.

Submission: Please submit photographs to the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona office by February 3, 2020 with a completed Official Entry Form attached to the back of the matte.

• Photos submitted can be in color or black and white.

• Please write a caption for your photograph.

• Photographs submitted MUST be by amateur photographers. Amateur is defined as a person who has never sold their photographs for profit.

• You may submit a photo in more than one category, but only one per category.

• All submissions for final judging must of the size specified below, and matted, not framed, for display as described.

• Use ONLY WHITE matte, or white mounting board.

• All photographs must be mounted to be eligible for judging.

• There must not be any transparent coverings or lamination on front or back of entries.

• Due to space restrictions, all artwork finished size including mat board MUST be NO LARGER than 16” x 20”, or smaller than 5” x 7”.

• ALL Artwork is due at the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona by Monday, February 3, 2019.

• No photographs will be returned.

Awards Winning photographs and their ribbons will be displayed in the North Hall at the Scottsdale Show in the AHAA Amateur Committee booth. 1st through 6th place ribbons will be awarded in each category. Champion and Reserve of all photos will be awarded.

Photography Contest Tips to easily mat your photo

Print your photo Select your photo and have it printed. There are a lot of places where you can have your photos printed. Can be done online or in-store. Select the option that works best for you. Below are some links to online options.

• Hint: If printing your photo at home please keep in mind that all inkjet printers vary in quality. If you decide to go that route make sure to use photo paper to print them on for best results.

Mat your photo There is a lot of information online on instructions on how to mat a photo. You can search with the term “mat photos” and you get a lot of results. Below is one description of an easy way to do it.

• Mats can be purchased in Michael’s, Joann’s and Hobby Lobby near their framing department. TIP: Before you shop, download the store app and get a coupon. Joann’s offers packages of four (this is the best deal if you are entering more than one photo).

• Use ONLY white mats for your photos. • HINT: It is a good idea to keep photos 5x7 or larger as they display better in the

contest and on the board. If they are smaller than 5x7 they get lost amid the larger photos. Past winner photos were larger, i.e., 8x10.

Assemble your tools. You will need the mat, photo, tape, and entry form.

• Center photo in the mat • Completely tape ALL edges of the photo to the

mat • Fill out the entry form completely. Don’t forget

to add a caption for your photo! • Tape the entry form to the back of the matted

photo and mail it in.

Captions matter! The judge likes the

creativeness of them in relationship to the photo.

It takes legwork to get everything together but once you identify the method you want to use for printing and obtaining the mats; it’s easy. We are looking forward to seeing your photos.
