Why do you learn physics?

• Why does the sky look blue in a sunny day and white in a cloudy day?

• What makes milk white and rainbow colorful?• How does an airplane fly? What lifts it?• How does a screwdriver work?• How does the speed detector on the 19th Ave

detect your driving speed instantaneously without contacting?

Physics is everywhere in our daily life.

Why do you learn physics?• What is the speed needed to escape the gravity of earth? (high

tech. Rocket science.) • How does a Roller Coaster work ? Why don’t you fall when

upside down (Fun)• How do divers, dances, and figure skaters control their spin by

open their arms and why? What is the best angle to throw a shut-put? (Sport)

• How do all instruments work? (Music) • How to detect the speed of blood flow? (cm/s) What affect

blood pressure and why? What does sweating do to regulate your body Temperature? (Bio/Medical)

• Are there at least 2 people in SFSU who have the exact same number of hair? SFSU has 30k people. How about NYU (8M people). Do you want to bet on it?

(Fun related to physics never ends…)Knowledge on physics is important and useful everywhere.

Why Study Physics?

•Understand/Appreciate NatureLightning, Cloud, Butterfly Wings, Sunset…

•Understand TechnologyLaser, Cell Phones, Microwave Ovens…

•Learn to Solve Difficult Problems•It’s Required

Do you REALLY want to learn it so~~~much? How much? Is physics HARD?

Yes. Physics is HARD. It is too good to be free. And do not forget E &M is all about vectors…

Why do you learn physics?Physics is everywhere!

Physics is fun!Physics is important!

Physics is COOL!

Physics principles apply to absolutely everything in the natural world, from raindrops to human bodies, from atoms to galaxies….

Physics knowledge can make your gf/bf/future kids think that you are a genius. Let’s learn enough to show off this semester….

Do you REALLY want to learn it?Yes! But how? The instructor explained

HOW TO SUCCEED step by step in details in the Syllabus!

Your success is guaranteed, if you exactly follow the to-do-list.

It’s like a step by step strategy guide or a survival manual for a challenging video game. All hard work will be rewarded eventually!

Student: Weining, I heard so much great things about your class and how much you can help students pass physics… help me….

Your Survival manual for PHYS 230. The Checklist: (12-15 hours a week is expected outside of the classroom.)

• Read the text before each lecture, otherwise lectures will be too quick and hard to follow.• Understand all concepts, equations and “why” in lectures. You will get lost if you just

memorize facts or plug numbers.• Actively derive equations and do the Math during lectures. To copy the board will not help. • Don’t miss class. To make-up takes 3 times of lecture time. Carefully review notes if you have

an unavoidable absence.• Study in groups and help each other, but do not simply give or ask for answers.• Finish HW independently after discussions. Make sure that you understand everything

by yourself. Mark those hard ones.• Request keys on Webassign. Review HW solutions posted after due date. Redo all the hard

ones before quizzes and exams.• Go to at least one help session every week. PHYS 230 lectures are not enough for showing

many step by step examples.• Improve your math skills. Otherwise, you will have a hard time dealing with the vector fields

and integrations. • Keep up with the materials as it is covered. New sessions build on the previous. It is much

harder to catch up once fall behind.

The most important thing is to reserve fixed period of time every week for each tasks

Honesty IssuesDishonesty on an exam, quiz, or homework will result in a grade of zero

for that assignment, or even a failing grade for the course.

Homework:Try it independently first, Read the books/notes, Discuss with friends,Close the notes and try independently,

Quiz/Clicker: No collaboration is allowed.Must sign your own name to submitted workSigning another’s name is COD offense

Exam: (close book, only my equation sheet is allowed)

Do NOT schedule early vacation departures, etc!
