Instrument Panel Cluster

Your vehicle’s instrument panel isequipped with this cluster or one verysimilar to it. The instrument panelcluster includes these key features:

A. Engine Coolant TemperatureGauge

B. Fuel GaugeC. Speedometer D. TachometerE. Message Center (displays

odometer and text messages onvarious vehicle functions, such aslow fuel, trunk ajar and others)

IMPORTANT: The instrument panelcluster is designed to let you knowabout many important aspects ofyour vehicle’s operation. It is impor-tant to read your Owner Manual andbecome familiar with the informationbeing relayed to you by the lights,gauges and indicators, as well aswhat action can be taken to ensuresafety and to prevent damage.

To set a preset station frequency to a preset button:1. Turn the radio to the desired station.2. Press and hold the desired preset button.3. An audible tone will sound when the preset is saved. The MP3 radios will also display the

message “Preset X saved.” (“X” is the preset location 1 through 6.)

1. Press and hold RCL button.2. While holding RCL button, push left side

of AUTO/TONE rocker button until correct hour appears.

3. While holding RCL button, push right sideof AUTO/TONE rocker button until correct minute appears.

4. Release RCL button when finished.

of TUNE/SEEK rocker button until correct hour appears.

Gently pull out VOL knob to adjust Balance /Fade.Press BASS/TREBknob to release. Rotate to adjust.

Press MODE button until desired mode is displayed. Use “+” or “-” button to adjust.

Press BASS/TREB/FAD/BAL knob until desired mode is displayed. Rotate knob to desired setting.

Tune TUNE/SEEK rocker button manually increases or decreases frequency.

Rotate TUNE knob to manually change.

Seek Hold TUNE/SEEK rocker button until tone sounds. Radio will automatically increase or decrease frequency to next receivable station.

Press the SEEK rocker button momentarily to automatically increase or decrease frequency to next receivable station.

Scan Press SCN button to automatically scan through all stations sequentially, pausing at each one for five seconds.

Press and hold SEEK rocker button until tone is generated to automatically scan through stations, in ascending or descending order, pausing at each receivable station.

Use either side of AUTO EQ rocker button to scroll through the preset equalizer options.

Six-Disc CD Changer with MP3 PlayerCD Changer Controls(Six-Disc Systems):

(Load): To load a single CD, pressLOAD for less than three seconds. Afterbeing prompted to select a CD loadinglocation, select a location by pressingthe Preset/Disc buttons 1–6.To load all CDs, press and hold the LOAD button for at least three seconds. When prompted, insert one disc at a time. Press any other radio button to cancel the operation.

(Six-Disc Systems): Press this but-ton; then press the preset button whenprompted to indicate which CD shouldeject or which slot should be loaded.Press LOAD button to cancel. To ejectall CDs, press and hold this button.“LOAD” will then display. Press LOADbutton to cancel.RDM: Press for random play of currentdisc. Press and hold for two seconds forrandom play of all discs. Press again tocancel.

(Six-Disc Systems): Press rightside of button to go to next CD. Pressleft side to go to previous CD.

XM Satellite Radio (if equipped):On equipped radios, two additional lis-tening bands are available: XM1 andXM2. To access these bands, press theAUX button until “XM1” or “XM2”appears on the display. • Press the left side of the i/TRAF

button to display the track/artist or station information.

• Press the SEEK or TUNE knob to change the channel.

XM Satellite Radio provides more than120 channels of digital quality soundthat goes wherever you go — coast tocoast. XM displays song title, artist andentertainment genre. Activation fee andservice subscription are extra. Availableonly in the U.S. 48 contiguous states.For more information, contact XM on theInternet at www.XMradio.com or call1-800-852-XMXM (9696).See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Remote Trunk OpeningUsing Remote Keyless EntryTransmitter (if equipped):To open your trunk electronically, pressthe car symbol ( ) on your RemoteKeyless Entry transmitter.Using Interior Release Button:• Press the interior trunk release button

( ) located on the lower part of theinstrument panel to the left of thesteering wheel.

See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Driver’s Seat Adjustments (if equipped)

To raise the seat:• Lift the front lever on the left side of

the driver’s seat (“A”); then release.Each time you raise the lever, theseat will move up a little more.Repeat until the seat is at the desiredheight.

To lower the seat: • Push down on the lever (“A”) and

release. Continue until the seat is atthe desired height.

To recline the seat:• Lift the recliner lever (“B”) to release

the seatback; then move the seat-back to where you want it. Releasethe lever to lock the seatback inplace. Press rearward on the seat-back to ensure it is locked into place.

Preventing Unauthorized EntryInto the Trunk

To secure your trunk:• Lock the rear seatbacks in the upright

position by pushing them up andrearward until you hear a click. Pushwith your hand over the latch loca-tions to ensure that the latches areengaged.

• Pull on the seatbacks to ensure thatthe latches are secure.

• Locate the red valet lever of the trunklatch, mounted inside the trunk lid(see above photo).

• Slide the red valet lever to the left(locked position) to activate the valetlockout switch. This will disable theinside release button and the carsymbol button on your Remote Keyless Entry transmitter (if equippedwith RKE). You will now be able toaccess the trunk only with your key.

Caution: When lifting or closing thetrunk lid with your hand, be careful notto accidentally move the Valet Lockoutlever (shown above) to the locked position. This will render your RKEtransmitter Trunk Release button inoperative and will require you to openthe trunk with your key.

Tire PressureThe Tire-Loading Information Label tellsyou the proper size, speed rating andrecommended tire inflation pressure forthe tires on your vehicle. This label islocated on the driver-side doorjamb.Overinflated tires produce a harsh ride,while underinflated tires reduce fueleconomy and affect vehicle handling.Both underinflated and overinflated tirespromote tire wear. See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.

Jump Starting Your VehicleThe battery is located in the spare tirewell under the load floor in the trunk.Should it be necessary to jump startyour vehicle, either the battery or theremote positive terminal in the enginecompartment can be used. This uniquefeature allows you to jump start the vehi-cle from either the front or the rear ofthe vehicle. The negative cable can beconnected to a heavy, unpainted metalpart of the vehicle or, if equipped, to anegative terminal on the battery. Seeyour Owner Manual for instructions onhow to properly and safely jump startyour ION.See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.

Removing and Securing theFuel Cap

To remove the fuel cap, turn the capcounterclockwise about 1/4 of a turn. To reinstall the fuel cap after filling yourtank, turn the fuel cap to the right (clock-wise) until you hear at least three clicks.The vehicle diagnostic system candetermine if the cap has been left off orimproperly installed. This would allowfuel to evaporate into the atmosphereand may cause the malfunction indicatorlamp to illuminate.See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.

Interior Airflow

Your Saturn continuously supplies freshair to the passenger compartment, evenwhen the fan is turned off. When theoutside temperature is cool, this airflowmay not be desirable. Options to changing the airflow include:1. Redirecting the airflow. 2. Changing the air temperature using

the rotary control knob.3. Turning on the Recirculate button ( ).See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Automatic Door Locks

All doors will automatically lock whenthe shift lever is moved out ofP (Park) in an automatic transmission,or when the vehicle speed is greaterthan 5 mph (8 km/h) in a manual transmission. To disable the automatic door lockingfeature:• Turn the ignition key to RUN with the

engine off and all doors closed. • Press and hold the power door lock

button until you hear two chimes.If the automaticdoor lockingfeature is dis-abled, it can beenabled follow-ing the sameprocedure. Youcan follow asimilar proce-dure to enableor disablepower unlock-ing as well.

See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Delayed Door LockingIf you press the LOCK button on yourRemote Keyless Entry transmitter whileany door or the trunk is open, the doorswill not lock. Instead, the interior chimewill sound three times. Once all doorsand the trunk are closed, the doors willlock. To cancel this delay, press thepower door lock switch or lock button onthe Remote Keyless Entry transmitter asecond time. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Saturn Security System

Your Saturn retailer can program theoperation of the Saturn Security Systemand Remote Keyless Entry transmitter tomeet your needs. If you want the securi-ty system to arm itself or the horn not tochirp when you lock the vehicle, yourretailer can change these and manyother features. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Retained Accessory Power

Retained Accessory Power allows cer-tain features on your vehicle to continueworking for up to 10 minutes after thekey is turned to OFF/LOCK, or removedfrom the ignition, and until the driver’sdoor is opened. Some of these featuresinclude the radio, wipers (HIGH speedonly), power windows and sunroof.These features will also continue to workwhen the ignition key is in the RUN orACC position.See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Preventing Window FoggingTo keep the vehicle glass fog-free, theclimate control system knob should bepositioned to the Defrost/Heater ( ) orDefrost ( ) setting. The Recirculate button ( ) should be left off. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Automatic Headlamp System (if equipped)

When it is dark enough outside, andyour headlamp switch is in the AUTOposition, the automatic headlamp sys-tem will turn on your headlamps at thenormal brightness, along with otherlamps such as taillamps, side markers,parking lamps, instrument panel lightsand radio display.

You can turn off the AutomaticHeadlamp System by rotating the head-lamp switch to off ( ). The lights willremain off until you rotate the headlampswitch to again. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Dome Lamp Operation

If the dome lamp switch is set in theDOOR position, the dome lamp willcome on when any of the doors areopened. When you enter or exit your carthrough the driver’s door, the dome lampwill stay on for a short period of timeafter the doors have been closed. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Split-Folding Rear SeatbacksYour Saturn is equipped with split-foldingseatbacks that increase the cargo area.Either seatback can be lowered.To fold the seatback(s), do the following:1. Open the trunk and pull one or both

of the small handles located in thecenter of the trunk.

Fold-Flat Front PassengerSeatback (Coupe models only)

Your Saturn may be equipped with afold-flat front passenger seatback. To fold the seatback down flat, followthese steps:

2. Push the seatback forward from thetrunk area or lower the seatback frominside the vehicle.

To close either seatback:1. Rotate the seatback up and rearward

until you hear a click. 2. Push with your hand over the latch

locations to ensure the latches haveengaged.

3. Pull on the seatbacks to ensure thatthe latches are secure.

See Section 1 of your Owner Manual.

1. Lift the bar under the front seat tounlock it.

2. Slide the seat to the rearmost posi-tion; then release the bar. Try tomove the seat to ensure the seat islocked in place.

3. Lift the recliner lever, located on theoutside of the seat, and fold the seat forward until the seatback disengages.

4. Continue to fold the seat forward untilit locks in the folded position. Pull upon the seatback to ensure it is locked.

Cruise ControlFor your convenience, the cruise controlbuttons are located on the steeringwheel.

(On/Off): Press this button to turnthe cruise control system on and off.

+RES (Resume): Press the top of thisbutton to resume a set cruising speed or to accelerate vehicle speed whilecruising.–SET (Set): Press the bottom of thisbutton to set cruising speed or todecrease vehicle speed while cruising.See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Red Line Reverse Shifting

To shift into reverse, lift up on thereverse-lockout collar located under theshift knob and move the lever into thegate marked “R.”See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Vehicle Symbols, MessageCenter, Warning Lights andIndicators

Your vehicle may be equipped with com-ponents and labels that use symbolsinstead of text. For more informationabout these symbols, see “SafetyWarnings and Symbols” in the Index ofyour Owner Manual.Your vehicle’s instrument panel containsa message center display and warninglights and indicators that alert you tovarious operating conditions of yourvehicle. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

CHG OIL MessageIf the “CHG OIL” message is displayedin the message center, it means thatthere is less than 10 percent of theengine’s oil life left. You should changethe engine oil soon. This feature assists in determining whento change the engine oil and filter. It’sbased on the engine operating tempera-tures and revolutions. The system doesnot check how much oil you have, soyou will have to check for that. Resetting Oil Life MonitorAfter changing the engine oil, the oil lifemonitoring system must be reset. Followthese steps to reset the monitor:1. With the engine running or the igni-

tion key in RUN and the engine off,press the trip odometer reset stemonce or twice until the “OIL LIFE” message is displayed and flashing inthe message center.

2. Press and hold the trip odometer but-ton on the instrument panel for a fewseconds until a chime sounds fivetimes.

The “OIL LIFE” message remains onwithout flashing when the reset proce-dure is complete.

If the light illuminates again and remainson for 30 seconds at the next ignitioncycle, the system did not reset. Repeatthe above procedure.See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.
