During Large Group Time, children and students can gather to sing worship songs, receive the awards they’ve earned and, most importantly, learn relevant and applicable truths from Scripture. This segment of the Awana program offers an opportunity to easily integrate Awana with the lesson themes taught in Sunday school each week.

It’s fun. It’s high-energy. It’s Game Time! In fact, one of the things kids will most remember about their Awana days is the fun they had playing games, doing crafts and engaging with different activities. At Awana, we realize not every church has a gym or an Olympic-sized activity center. The Awana staff will work with your leaders to create games and activities to fit your church’s vision — and your building.

While Awana ministries are adaptable and flexible to fit the size of your church’s volunteer force, building and budget, most Awana ministries have

some things in common. The program usually runs for one-and-a-half to two hours and involves a rotation through three segments:

Small Group Time allows kids to break into age-specific groups where they dive into biblical truth with their leaders, discuss the meaning and application of Scripture, and share verses they’ve memorized. Small Group Time establishes a foundation for understanding the Bible and growing as a resilient disciple of Christ in a community with other Christians that will last a lifetime.

Proven and Effective Discipleship PhilosophyIs there a child discipleship philosophy that is effective, fruitful and has long-term impact?In 2014, our ministry began studying the Scriptures with this pursuit (with specific interest in the life and ministry of Jesus). Additionally, we also studied existing and accessible data, and conducted our own research. Our leadership team has facilitated over 1,000 in-person conversations with church leaders, gaining their insight and feedback. We even studied our 70-year history as a global children and youth ministry – looking at both the ups and downs of our own successes and failures. We simply wanted to know, what is it that produces long-term discipleship fruit in the lives of kids into their adulthood?

All of our learning continued to point to three effective components that make up the Resilient Child Discipleship Philosophy: Belong, Believe and Become.

Resilient Child Discipleship: The process of a Christ follower committing meaningful, intentional, and consistent time and space to a child or a group of children so that they may know who Jesus is and are known by a body of believers (Belong), place their faith in Jesus and apply the Word of God (Believe), and reproduce their own discipleship (Become) so that a third spiritual generation can lead and love like Jesus Christ.

Large Group TimeThe What and Why books (on pages 34 and 47) provide lessons ideal for combined ages. Choose worship songs that are appropriate for all age groups or use this time to hand out awards to all age levels.

Small Group TimeForm groups based on age and handbook level, or combine ages to share prayer requests. Listen to children recite their verses individually; you can ask important questions personalized to their level of understanding regardless of what book the student is in. Other kids can strengthen their memorization while you listen, but involve the older kids as Awana leaders-in-training and recruit them to be listeners as well!
