Get out of the Church!Get out of the Church!Get out of the Church!Get out of the Church!

One of the worst Sundays for me in almost nine years was last

winter when one of our members, who had recently been

discharged from the hospital, le our morning service because

it was too cold. He is back with us now, but that was

embarrassing.

The problem was we had “milked” our 47-year-old HVAC

system a year too long in order to save spending the $212,000

it cost to replace. Consequently, at our July business mee-ng,

the congrega-on wisely voted to modernize our system.

We will pay for this huge expense from our emergency savings

and by expanding our current line of credit. We are not

thrilled about taking on more debt (we have been paying off

our line of credit ahead of schedule), but truthfully, we can’t

wait any longer. The -me is now.

I need your help. Please join me in dona-ng a one--me capital

improvement gi on September 23, 2018 so we do not have to

borrow as much money. No gi is too big or too small. I plan

to give the proceeds from at least two of the steers I will soon

sell from the farm. Let’s not give God a cold shoulder, let’s

turn up the heat!

T he youth has had a great summer with bible studies and guest speakers. As the new schoo l year gets

underway, please continue to pray for our youth that they will be vessels of the Gospel at school and in the community. TruNorth will resume meeting weekly on Sunday nights beginning September 9th at 6:15 pm in the Youth Room upstairs. Please be on the lookout for a “reminder announcement” with more details! The YOUTH Sunday School Class is continuing the series The Baptist Faith & Message. We meet on Sunday mornings at 9:45 am in the Youth Room, and we invite all youth (6th grade through 12th grade) to join us!

D uring the month of August, children began a placemat project for our pr ison ministry. "God is Love"

and "God Loves You" are just a couple of the beautifully adorned messages that our children are sending out to others. As fall approaches, the children are settling in to new Sunday School classes, and KidzQuest is going strong with dedicated volunteers who share their time, talent, and g i f t s to enr ich our ch i ldren 's ministry through music, art, crafts, and God's word. Volunteers are always welcome and always needed in both Sunday School and KidzQuest. If you would like to serve, please contact me or Johnny Dickson, Sunday School Superintendent.

TTTT hank you for giving so generously to the Christmas in August collection of school supplies for Galax Elementary School and Middle School. No monetary value can be placed on these items, but they will be used throughout the year for those who cannot afford to buy their own supplies. The school, parents, kids & teachers are so appreciative for your donations!

Each September, the Women’s Missionary Union of Virginia (WMUV) and the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) sponsor Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions. This offering provides funding for all WMUV missions and ministries as well as making possible other special ministries, outreach projects and initiatives uniquely connected to Virginia Baptists but not funded through regular streams of giving. The goal for First Baptist Galax this year is $2,000. Thank you for your support of this special offering. This year’s theme is ‘Be Love’.

“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

Operation Christmas Child

October is the month to begin packing your shoeboxes, so keep that in mind as you go through the next

two months. This program is an excellent way to get involved in a missionary project that can lead a child to come to know Christ. The National Collection week is November 12-19.

What a blessing! We have seen the hand of God working among our lives, families and church. On June 30th, we had a yard sale and raised $792 - money that will be used to repair the kitchen area.

During the month of July, we dedicated Sunday afternoons to talk about family and marriage, and specific topics for young people were addressed by young Daniel Sánchez.

July 26th-29th, the Lord blessed us greatly with the first Spanish Vacation Bible School in the city of Galax which was held in our church. The data are as follows: Thursday: we had 55 students and 19 servers for a total of 74 in attendance. Friday: we had 51 students and 21 servers for a total of 72. Saturday: we had 31 students and 22 servers for a total of 53. Sunday: we had 43 students and 22 servers for a total of 65 in attendance. On Sunday, we had 5 adult visitors. In total, there were 9 professions of faith - of which 3 were adults!

We are currently preaching on "One Heart for God" on Sundays in the morning, and "Walking with God" on Sunday afternoons.

Thank you for your prayers for my family; my wife and I have obtained permanent residency! May God bless you greatly and give you discernment in the election of the new pastor.

Always under the direction of God, Rev. Pedro Alvarado Rodríguez

All motorcycles, classic & vintage cars, and family cars—are invited to join us for a trip to the Pine Tavern Restaurant in Floyd, VA for food and fellowship. We will meet in the parking lot of First Baptist immediately following the worship service. Please call John Patterson for any questions: 276-233-2443.

Fall is in the air, and that means the holidays are just around the corner. NOW is the t ime to consider becoming a part of our church’s music ministry.

Rehearsa ls wi l l begin soon for Christmas 2018, and WE NEED YOU!! Take time to join in on the fun and fellowship each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the choir room. No prior singing experience is required...just bring a willing spirit!! This is also a great time to start using your hidden talents for glorifying God in the Orchestra.

Please contact the church music office if you have any questions regarding these two groups. (And, don’t forget that there’s always room for leading in worship on Sunday mornings, too. Clear your throats and dust off those instruments because we have a seat just for you!!) “Give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; make known among the nations what He has done. Sing to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of all His wonderful acts. Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.”

Dear First Baptist: I would like to thank everyone at First Baptist Church for the beautiful flowers, the prayers and all the love shown during the passing of my mother, Geneva Richardson.

First Baptist:

From the first Sunday my family and I walked through the doors into this church and community, we have received nothing but tremendous love and support. I’m incredibly thankful to belong to such an incredible group of Christ followers who con-stantly encourage me in my faith and in all that I do. Thank you so much for your very generous gift. There is no way I can ever repay you all for your kindness.

With all my love & gratitude, Clif Conley

Dear Church Family:

Words can not truly express our heartfelt gratitude for all you have and are doing for us through these trying times. God has blessed us with Christian brothers and sisters like you. Thank you for the cards, gifts, meals, rides to doctors and most of all your prayers. It’s been a hard, long fight with a few more rounds to go, but with God’s love, mercy and grace, we will win. All praise, honor and glory belong to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you all again and please keep us in your prayers.

We Love You, Russell & Mary Ann Dickerson Psalm 46:1 & Philippians 4:13

Dear First Baptist Family:

Thanks for the visits, phone calls, cards, food and most of all your prayers following my surgery. Your love and friendship is so appreciated.

Love Must Begin Somewhere!

While much of America seems to be getting more and more divisive, I'm going to be holding doors for strangers, letting people cut in front of me in traffic, greeting all I meet, exercising patience with others, and smiling at strangers. I'll do this as often as I have the opportunity. I will not stand idly by and let children live in a world where un-conditional love is invisible and being rude is ac-ceptable. Join me in showing love and respect to others. Find your way to swing the pendulum in the direc-tion of love. Because today, sadly, hate is gaining ground. Love must begin somewhere, and love will overcome hate. Imagine the difference if we each purposefully love a little more.
