ART HOUSE THEATER DAY

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24

Art House Theater Day celebrates the legacy of independent theaters as advocates for cinema arts. In an age where media has become more digital than tangible, more solitary than social, art house theaters remain the physical spaces where film lovers congregate and connect with intrepid, creative filmmaking. They are the beating heart for new and exciting cinema that is shaping the future of the medium. Art House Theater Day is a worldwide celebration in honor of this movement, a day to celebrate cinemas that stand the test of time and the tremendous film culture that art house theaters promote.

For its part in the nationwide celebration, the Hollywood Theater presents two screenings: A Town Called Panic: The Specials at 1pm, and Phantasm Remastered at 9pm. Each screening will begin with a selection of vintage movie trailers, presented in 35mm on our newly refurbished projectors! You’ll also have the opportunity to tour the booth and meet the projectionists. Stay tuned to our website and Facebook page as we announce more free giveaways, exclusive merchandise, and other exciting additions to the day.

With disarming wit and hilarious visuals, A Town Called Panic revels in the simple setup of three plasticine toys sent on increasingly surreal and freewheeling adventures.

In Back to School, a class assignment yields a special prize, but only Pig knows the answer. Cowboy and Indian use a special shrink-ing potion to try and sneak into Pig’s brain, where they discover a sodium-packed world of pig cops riding in bacon cars and sausage cycles. In The Christmas Log, their out-of-control antics lead Horse to call Santa and cancel the presents. But the boys figure they can still save Christmas… if they break into their neighbor’s house to steal his yule log! Directed by Stephane Aubier & Vincent Patar.

**PHANTASM 9 PM, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24

Phantasm is a surprisingly artful and imaginative horror film, an impressive accomplish-ment for 23-year-old director Don Coscarelli, who worked with a miniscule budget to create a small masterpiece. When Mike (Michael Baldwin) spies some sinister Jawa-like creatures stealing corpses from the local cemetery, he and his older brother Jody (Bill Thornbury) explore the mausoleum, where they find that the mortician (Angus Scrimm), a towering, emaciated figure with superhuman strength, has somehow bridged the gap between Earth and the afterworld and needs fresh corpses. Among the tools of his trade is a flying Swiss army pinball that bores into the skulls of its hapless victims then extracts their brains. Their allies die off one by one, until only the brothers are left to defend hu-mankind against the nefarious “Tall Man” and his army of shrouded dwarves. The result is a memorable chiller with more than its share of genuine shocks. Includes a never-before-seen sneak peek behind the scenes of the fifth and final Phantasm: Ravager including a tribute to Phantasm star Angus Scrimm. (Horror/1979/R/88 min)

NICK CAVE’S ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING

8 PM, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

ONE NIGHT ONLY!The feature film One More Time With Feeling will screen in cin-emas for one night only on September 8. Directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly), the film will be shown in more than 650 cinemas worldwide on September 8, immediately prior to the release of Skeleton Tree the following day. Dominik delves into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination. Filmed in black-and-white and colour, the result is stark, fragile, and raw. (Documentary/2016/Not Rated/112min)

THE SEEDS PUSHIN’ TOO HARD

DOORS OPEN 7 PM, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17

ONE NIGHT ONLY!Punk has long been associated with New York, and flower-power psychedelia is synonymous with San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury. But some rock historians, purveyors, and artists trace both genres to mid-’60s Los Angeles and a garage band called, appropriately enough, the Seeds. This engaging documentary pays tribute to the quartet and the city where it flourished. (Documentary/2014/Not Rated/112min)

Award winning director Neil Norman will be present at the screening and will do Q&A with the audience. Get Hip Re-cords and GNP Crescendo Records will have a mind blowing assortment of SEEDS music for sale in the lobby. Both before and after the 8pm screening, local bands The Nox Boys and The Flower Lady and Her Assistants will bring the garage rock sounds of the ‘60’s back to life live in the auditorium!

STAY UP TO DATE!As hard as we try to include our complete monthly schedule on these calendars, every month additional showtimes or movies are added after the calendar has been released. THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK— THE TOURING YEARSOpens Thursday, September 15 Directed by Ron HowardTHE BEATLES’ FEBRUARY 9, 1964 appearance on the Ed Sullivan stage changed culture forever and introduced the Fab Four to America. What the band did next would introduce them to the entire world: they went on tour. By the time the band quit touring in August of 1966, they had performed 166 concerts in 15 countries and 90 cities around the world. The cultural phenomenon their touring helped create, known as “Beatlemania,” was something the world had never seen before and, arguably, hasn’t since. The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years tells the story of those years—from the perspectives of the band, its world, the fans, and their world. It examines the impact of those years on each of The Beatles—the toll that touring took on their relationships and the effect it had on their musical evolution, as well as the colossal boost the tours gave to their lifestyle and fame. But while the band created the spark, it was young people around the world who created the firestorm. The film also explores the incomparable electricity between performer and audience that turned the music into a movement—a common experience into something sublime.

The Beatles played Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965, in what was to be the first rock concert ever staged in a stadium in front of more than 55,000 people. The event was filmed using fourteen 35mm cameras by Ed Sullivan Productions and Brian Epstein and for the very first

time, the fully restored, remastered, 30-minute performance will be available to screen as part of the worldwide theatrical releaseThe Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years. Only available in theatres, the 4K restoration with sound remastered at Abbey Road Studios by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, includes performances of the classic songs such as A Hard Day’s Night, I’m Down, and Dizzy Miss Lizzy. After Leonard’s passing on February 27, 2015, the outpouring of affection from Star Trek fans prompted Adam to widen the film’s scope to encompass his father’s life and career beyond Mr. Spock. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT 90 FOR 90 AND DAY OF GIVING

This summer was a hard one for the Hollywood Theater. If the closing of Potomac Ave wasn’t bad enough, we got hit with $17,000 in heating and air conditioning repairs. So we are counting on YOU, our loyal fans and supporters, to help us through this difficult time. We need you to donate to our fundraising campaign, which we are calling our 90 for 90 (in hopes of raising $90,000 for this the Hollywood Theater’s 90th anniversary year). Money raised will help us pay off the HVAC repair bills and other expenses associated with lower attendance due to the street closure. It will also give us a solid reserve moving forward. We are already 12% toward our goal, and every little bit helps. So please make a donation at the theater or online at www. thehollywooddormont.org. Or go to www.www.pittsburghgives.org on September 21 and donate to the Hollywood during the Pittsburgh Foundation’s annual Day of Giving. Donations to both campaigns are tax deductible. Please help keep our non-profit community theater--with all its great movies and events alive!!
