We call on all leadership, clergy,politicians, etc. to be directly account-able and responsible to the PEOPLE.

All leadership must put the peoplefirst and not be swayed by Money, Grants,Politics, Religion, Position, the Media, theMayor, etc. All leadership must immedi-ately drop all special interests and focuson the salvation and safety of our chil-dren.

We call for a citywide Truce on allGang Warfare, Street Beefs and Feuds.End the senseless Violence and acts ofaggression towards your own people.We also encourage other Metro AreasBrockton, Lawrence, Lynn, Worcester,Springfield, etc. to call for an immediateend to violence.

We demand that the Media present afair and accurate account of our commu-nity and People. We demand an end tosensationalized media and furtherdemand a balanced portrayal of our com-munity to present profiles of our positivealternatives in Academics, Arts andCulture. We demand an end to the use ofterms such as "animals" or the labelingof our youth as "thugs" "gangstas" or the

labeling of our communities as "drugzones" or "hot spots" or other code termi-nology that seeks to deflect the realproblems and scare the community.

We demand that local radio stationsadopt a "Balance Campaign" and ceaseand desist on playing and promotingmusic and personalities that degradeand demean our women, promote vio-lence and the use and sale of drugs andguns.

We call for an end to unsafe zones inour community where there are very pub-lic displays of open Prostitution and DrugUse. This unsafe and unhealthy behaviorcan no longer be tolerated it is not goodfor our women, children and elders.

We call for a community cleanup of Dudley Station - No more drug addicts,prostitution.Blue Hill Avenue (from Dudley St. -Brunswick) No More Prostitution.Grove Hall, Codman Sq., Uphams Corner,Humboldt Ave., Elm HillNO MORE ROBBERIESNO MORE RANDOM ACTS OF VIOLENCE. Weare killing ourselves.

We demand that the Boston PublicSchool System, immediately develop newcurriculums which educate each of ourchildren equally. We demand that therebe implemented new academic stan-dards and practices to promote excel-lence in our schools. We demand a"Truth-Based" curriculum that is cultur-ally accurate and incorporates a trueBlack/African History, Latino History, andan updated and true American History.Furthermore a cross the board standardshould be developed for high schools inorder to prepare our children for highereducation. Every child in Bostondeserves a Boston Latin quality educa-tion.

We call for an immediate end to eco-nomic warfare on the community. Wedemand an end to predatory lending, dis-parities in business and home loans,malevolent merchants who do bad busi-ness in our community. City and Stateviolations (Parking, Street Cleaning,Towing, Snow Plowing, Trash, High Taxrates) which are heaped out on our com-munity without equal city/state services.

I am a 31 year oldlife long residentof Roxbury.Because of myparents, especially

my father, I have been activelyinvolved in my community since theage of 14. I have been to thousandsof meetings. I know hundreds ofpeople across Boston. I even ran forBoston City Council last yearbecause I felt the need to stand upand take a leadership role in thecommunity that raised me and that Ilove and call home. And I willalways stand up for what I believein.

As a child, I thought of childishthings. . .as a man I think differentlywhich in turn causes me to act dif-ferently. I have been taught to standup. I wake up each morning andthank God for blessing me withanother day, then I stand up. WhenI'm on the bus or train and a womanor senior could use a seat, I standup. If I am met by someone trying touse me, deceive me, or hurt me, Istand up. And for family, friends,community, or right versus wrong, Iwill stand up.

I attended a meeting where BrotherTruesee Allah, a man I respect wasspeaking as part of a panel. Thisparticular meeting his commentswere perfectly aligned with mythoughts and thoughts that I havehad at so many meetings before.We often comment, complain, or cri-tique things at meetings. I am notsaying there is anything wrong withthat, but some issues that we facein our community are far too criticalto stop there. Truesee said to thecrowd, (and I'm paraphrasing) I dothis work daily and am willing toroll my sleeves up and stand side byside with anyone willing to do thesame. Anyone not willing to takeaction should be quiet. At thatpoint I was already standing.

Jim Thompson III of Dorchestermade a similar point when theGuardian Angels re-emerged lastyear. And the point hits home everytime. We need to do more.

I invite you to take a stand. Thereare so many ways you can do soand make a difference.You can clean your street withfriends in neighbors in the summerand shovel in the winter. You canshow support by volunteering at acommunity center or organization inyour neighborhood. You canstrengthen your neighborhood byregistering to vote and voting. You

can do this even if you've been con-victed of a felony! You can thentake the power of that vote and useit to reform the CORI law that pre-vents many people in our communi-ty from finding housing and or goodemployment. You can be a rolemodel to young men and women inthe community by speaking to themwhen you see them doing some-thing wrong. You can walk forpeace. You can donate money to anorganization that is doing goodwork in your community. You canget involved in a local school orsports team. You can write a letteror make a phone call to an electedofficial to tell them how you feel.You can pass out flyers to yourstreet regarding activities, elec-tions, etc . . .

There are dozens of systems thatare working against you each day.How long before we start workingagainst them to make sure theplace we call home looks the waywe dream of it being? There arehundreds of ways you can takeaction and play a part in improvingour neighborhoods but to do so youwill have to stand up for something.Pick an issue that is important toyou, your family, or your neighbor-hood then find an action that suitsyour strengths and then. . .

Draft Resolution forBoston City Council

WHEREAS:All people have theright to feel and be safe in theirhomes and neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS:Building relationshipsof trust between residents andthe police is an important buildingblock of effective communitypolicing; and

WHEREAS:Reducing youth gunviolence is an important socialand law enforcement goal; and

WHEREAS:The Boston Police haveannounced their "Safe Homes"program of warrantless searchesaimed at removing "illegal guns"from homes; and

WHEREAS:The "consent tosearch" on which the Safe Homesprogram rests is unlikely to beeither truly informed or genuinelyvoluntary; and

WHEREAS:The program exposesfamilies to potentially serious neg-ative consequences and coulddeprive young people of produc-tive futures; and

WHEREAS:The program conflictswith the fundamental constitution-al right to

be free from unreasonablegovernment searches; and

WHEREAS:Evidence from the St.Louis program on which "SafeHomes" is based suggests thatwithout the guarantee of immuni-ty from prosecution the programwill be ineffective; and

WHEREAS:The program is likelyto be counterproductive in publicsafety terms, undermining rela-tions of trust between lawenforcement and the public; and

WHEREAS:There are other suc-cessful ways of getting guns outof homes, such as gun drop offand buy back programs;Therefore, be it

RESOLVED: The Boston CityCouncil urges the Boston PoliceDepartment to either add blanketimmunity from prosecution to its"Safe Homes" program or ensurethat the "consent to search" isindeed voluntary by making policevisits to homes informational only,with parents being asked to callthem back if they would like for asearch to be conducted.
