What’s held the analytics industry back?
30-year-old design principles have dictated a lack of system innovation:
• CPU – processors capable of driving high-speed response were expensive and proprietary, and lacked memory addressability (64 bit vs. 32 bit)
• RAM – memory was costly, slow, not highly reliable, and power hungry
• Storage – spinning disk has largely been too slow and expensive, resulting in significant bottlenecks accessing data
• Application Design – traditional database and data warehouse design relied on structures and schema that focused on insulating applications and users from physical hardware limitations
Systems were optimized for transactions –
BI was an afterthought!

What is modular scalability? - Non-disruptive growth, .5TB at a time = capacity when you need it!
Start with 1TB dev/test configuration 2 servers, SAN for up to 2TB, switch infrastructure for up to 8TB
Add a third server for production 3 servers, N + 1 Active/Standby HA configuration
Add up to 2 additional servers in 1st rack 3-5 servers, N + 1 Active/Standby configuration
1TB 1TB HA 1.5TB HA
2.0TB HA
2.5TB HA
Add a 2nd rack and SAN for 2.5 – 4TB 6-9 servers, N + 1 Active/Standby configuration
