Where do I start?

Do this stuff ASAP

Book your arrival slot You must be thrilled to know that we are not charging booking deposits. Whilst you are £300 better off, your booking with us must be validated through booking your arrival slot. Without this, your accommodation offer will be cancelled. Waste no time and book your arrival slot now.

Arrangements for disabled students

It’s very, very, very important that you let us know as soon as possible about any disability arrangements related to physical or mental health conditions, if you haven’t already done so. Please call [insert residence name] now to discuss your needs, and we’ll make sure everything is in place for when you arrive.

Medical registration In case you need a doctor between now and next summer, you’ll need to see a GP close to your residence. Which means you need to register with them now. You can sign up with the King’s College Health Centre by downloading the registration and health check forms here.

Insurance cover When you live in a King’s Residences, your fees include insurance for everything you keep in your room against fire, theft and flood, up to a certain value. You may wish to extend

your cover if you’re planning on bringing high value items. For the ins and outs of value limits and excesses, check the relevant policy here.

TV licence If you’re planning to watch or record live television in your room, on your own telly or computer, you’ll need to buy a TV licence – visit the TV Licensing website for more information. If caught without a license by the TV licence inspectors, you could face a fine of up to £1000.

Fee payment Your fees cover a period between 40 to 52 weeks, depending on the contract you have been offered. Fees include the Christmas and Easter vacations. Your invoice is activated when you check in and the due dates for payment of fees are: • Semester 1: 25 October 2015 • Semester 2: 25 January 2016 • Semester 3: 05 May 2016 It’s worth remembering there may be charges added to your account during the year – if you’ve needed a replacement College ID Card, for example. After you’ve set up your IT account, you can check it at any time on your Student Records profile which can be accessed here.

What I should be aware of?

Think about POSSIBILITIES & LIMITATIONS

The joy of randomness University life is all about chance meetings – occasionally life-changing ones – with people and ideas you’d never otherwise come across. So, our system for allocating rooms is completely random: our residences accommodate both male and female students from across departments and years of study. Be prepared to mingle, hobnob and hit it off. Everyone living in a residence needs to help build an environment of trust and mutual respect, and to treat others as they’d wish to be treated You never know, they might turn out to be your best friend for life.

Your room You’re only going to be here for a year and when you move out, someone else will move in. And so on, every September, so although it’s very tempting to try and recreate your room at home there are somethings to bear in mind: 1. Space in your room will be

limited, so leave chairs, tables, desks, fridges and wardrobes at home. It’ll be limited in your wardrobe too, so you will probably struggle to fit in your entire shoe collection. And, because drying clothes causes condensation (and, ultimately, mould) in rooms, please don’t bring a clothes drying rack. There is no storage outside your room except for bike storage.

2. Wall decorations stay well past your residency, so don’t go all 60-Minute Makeover on us and start redecorating - that means not attaching anything to the walls, including Blu-Tac, tape, and pins, because walls with holes and patches of chipped paint are an eyesore for whoever’s next in your room. A word of warning: there are no aerial sockets in rooms and wall-mounting of TVs is not permitted. There are plenty of other ways to make your room your own, with your bed linen, a rug, small table lamps and framed, freestanding pictures.

3. Make sure your electrics don’t

burn down the building - laptops, printers and small electrical appliances such as speakers, small lamps and alarm radios are all welcome, as long as they’re in good condition and fitted with plugs or adaptors that are compatible with the UK electrical system.

Happy community living We’re proud of our diversity at King’s, and we’re committed to ensuring the fair, equal treatment of everyone here. When you attend King’s, you commit to the same standard. It means never criticising other people on the grounds of their race, sex, age, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, disability or any other irrelevant distinction. Of course, we don’t expect you to become best buddies with everyone. You should, though, do your best to get along with them and live together happily. So there are the basic ground rules: no drugs (we operate a zero

tolerance policy) no smoking of any kind (including

e-cigarettes) except in designated areas

no barbecues, candles or other naked flames

keep noise to a minimum and don’t slam doors

picking and cleaning up after yourself goes a long way in shared kitchen

Note on electrical equipment If you’re bringing them from outside the UK, that means fitting your plugs with three-pin adaptors that comply with the British electrical system (230V, 50Hz) and British Standard BS 1363. It’s best to buy these, and any electrical equipment, including your rice cookers, from retailers here in the UK when you arrive. The only exceptions are electric shavers: there are two-pin plug sockets in all residence bedrooms. Extension leads are OK, as long as they’re not overloaded, but block plug adaptors are not.

Take it or Leave it?

The ultimate CHECKLIST The most common mistake of new residents is to bring more than they have room for, so when it comes to packing, less is definitely more!

What is already here Desk with drawers Desk lamp and a chair A bed and mattress with a

mattress cover Small wardrobe Curtains/blinds at the window Card/coin-operated laundry

facilities Ironing boards in the laundry and

some kitchens Microwaves are standard in all

kitchens Kettle and toaster (except in

Unite managed residences) Vacuums, mops, buckets and

brooms

What you need to bring Clothes and shoes you’ve probably got covered. Here’s the list of less obvious essentials you’ll be glad you found room for: Sheets, duvet and cover, pillow

and cover. Towels, shower mat, toiletries,

toilet roll, hair dryer, straighteners etc.

Cooking utensils and pans (induction hob-compatible for Champion Hill Residence), plates, cups, glasses and cutlery, tea towels, washing-up liquid

Laundry detergent

What not to bring Leaving aside the obvious, such as pets, crossbows and light aircraft, our list of forbidden items is just common sense; it includes: Anything involving a naked flame,

such as candles, hookah pipes, incense burners, fairy lights and barbecues

E-cigarette chargers Wardrobes, chest of drawers

and other large items of furniture Fridges, electric heaters or air

conditioners And, unless you’re a disabled

user, please don’t bring a car, moped, motorbike, quad bike, articulated lorry or any other motor vehicle. There are much better ways to get to and from College.

What’s the big day like?

Moving In STEP BY STEP On the day you move in, several hundred others will be doing just the same. We do our best to make the whole process as smooth and stress-free as possible but chances are, moving in will be a moving experience, especially if you’ve never lived away from home before. There’ll be a lot to do, a lot to think about and maybe a big send-off moment for you and your loved ones. Here are some things to do and be aware of that will remove some unnecessary stress from your move.

1. Keep to your arrival slots Arrivals are spaced out evenly to avoid queues during the day, so please book and stick to your arrival slot to help everyone getting the time and attention they deserve in such important day.

2. Come to reception before unloading

You can be dropped outside the residence and then the driver will need to park at one of the many car parks nearby.

3. Meet and greet At reception, our Arrivals Host will scan your arrival slot ticket and direct you where to go next to collect your keys and hand in your online induction document. If you have failed to arrive within your slot, complete your enrolment or induction online you may be asked to join the slow lane queue.

4. Check In Once at your check in desk, you will be asked to provide a photo ID, sign our arrivals list before you are given your keys.

5. Unload Take your time moving your bags from the parking areas to your room. Never leave any items unattended on the street or in the residence, not even for a moment. As well as the obvious potential for theft, there’s also the risk of mixing up your bags with someone else’s. Voila you have moved in!

Before you go

Here are some FINAL TIPS Don’t forget to bring A photo ID (passport or driver’s

licence) Your arrival slot ticket Your completed online induction Your login details to access the

King’s Wi-Fi

Plan your journey London is subject to considerable roadworks throughout the summer and you are advised to check the BBC local road information prior to travelling.

Parking & unloading There is no car parking available at any of our residences, and they all operate on a stop and drop at the main entrance – attempting to park there you will be asked. You should also check here about the best place to park and unload.

King’s staff Our staff is identifiable by our unique red King’s t-shirt, there are also a number of helpers from KCLSU and the Christian Union; they all wear the famous “Ask Me” badges.

Kitchen storage Kitchen and fridge space will be limited, so woks, collections of rare Italian olive oils and other large items are best left at home. Bring sealable containers for food and make sure you label everything.

Three-quarter beds Except for Stamford Street, Great Dover Street and Wolfson House all residences have 3/4 beds. You will need to purchase double sheets for those.

Inventory form If you find anything that isn’t working or just nowhere to be found in your room, please complete the inventory form in your rooms and bring it to reception. We will send someone to check it as soon as possible.

Late arrivals If it looks like you’ll arrive after 24hrs from your booked arrival slot, you need to inform the residence directly as soon as possible. If you don’t, they might re-allocate your room to someone else and you may also incur a no-show fee of up to £300.

We can’t wait to see you in September!
