Where do you see yourself holidaying next? The snow? A seaside resort? Perhaps a camping trip with the kids? Whether it is planned or but a dream, let’s try a little contemplation: After you read the following instructions, close your eyes (although be mindful of the boss if you’re at work...) and picture where it is you wish to escape to. Whether it’s Byron Bay or Barcelona, grasp an image in your mind, think about being there − sipping on champagne, shopping, swimming, photographing, writing or whatever you would be doing; take a few calming breaths on this image, as if you were really there.

... Now that you’re awake (I hope) and back here with me, I’ll admit, no, I probably shouldn’t be distracting you from the day ahead. However, in the office we’ve been considering the concept of ‘escape’, and have discovered we feel all the better for it. Leanne’s now in the process of manifesting her perfect getaway to the Greek Islands, “Sipping wine in little cafes in the hilltops overlooking the ocean”; and Aimi’s got a goal, “To visit my family in England, to stay with them in Cornwall, and at their holiday house in France − I would love to see Europe all over again!”

It’s too easy to get caught up in the banal or stressful aspects of the daily routine, and before we know it, the sun’s down and The Workers are once again on telly singing “Goodnight” to the children of Queensland. While this issue is dedicated to the kind of getaway that evokes visions of palm trees, beaches, prawns and wine, and river cruising along the Rhine, I’d like to also champion the idea that we should ‘get away’ every day. Not just to daydream though, but to really take a moment for a ‘me’ escape − to clear the mind, set a positive intention, and to visualise where you’re headed, whether that be to a peaceful beach with your dog this afternoon, to the snowy summit of Mount Fuji at Christmastime, or into a quiet 15-minute period right now, with a piping hot cuppa as you read this new issue... Sarah xPS would you like to escape with even more Get it? Head over to our website and sign up for our new eMag, for regular updates on events, sales, travel, fashion and much more.

ENTERTAINMENT with Sarah Blinco

What’s your earliest memory of performing?

I remember being at gigs from the time I was really little, and I’m sure I was always putting on a performance around the house as a kid. I think my first real memory of performing would be recording When Your Love Is Gone with Dad [Aussie rock icon, Jimmy Barnes] when I was about 8, and we all joined him on stage for the tour that followed.

you’re surrounded by entertainers, your dad, Jimmy, and hubby, Ben, are just two; Do you get star struck often?

I love meeting other artists and seeing what motivates them. There have been a couple of moments that I’ve had to pinch myself! The most amazing was a while back, my husband and I were in the States and had a few days off so we flew to Dallas to see Aretha Franklin play live. She’s one of my biggest influences. The Queen of Soul! We saw the show which was incredible, and went back to the hotel and were sitting in the lobby bar having a drink and debriefing − we were both in shock that we’d seen Aretha Live! All of a sudden, her whole touring party walked into the hotel. I was really nervous, but Ben encouraged me to go over and say hello. I introduced myself and thanked her for all the music and inspiration. Amazing.

you’ve done amazingly well with Weight Watchers having lost 20kg! What is your favourite thing about this particular program?

I’ve never had any interest in ‘dieting’.

mahalia Barnes, much loved performer, Weight Watchers ambassador and past The Voice contestant, is presently doing the musical rounds of australia. She tells Sarah Blinco about her journey so far

LOVING

Life

12

Page 13: Get it Magazine September Edition

September 201313

I’m not the type to worry about how I look, or fitting into a pair of jeans. I’m very lucky that I have never really felt insecure or ashamed of how I look. Also, I LOVE food. I am such a passionate foodie, it’s all about family, friends, music and food! I love to cook too, so the thought of giving up the food I love or having meals delivered was very unappealing. The best thing about Weight Watchers is that it’s realistic and it works. It’s not extreme, it fits with your lifestyle, whatever that happens to be. It is flexible and all about making little lifestyle changes, so I really believe it is a long term solution as opposed to a quick fix. I actually feel like I’m learning about making good choices and I really like that I am very much in control.

What’s your top health/fitness tip learned throughout this journey with Weight Watchers?

Balance. Awareness. I think the thing that really surprised me is how much the incidental exercise like walking around, walking to the shops or taking the stairs instead of the lift, makes such a big difference. It’s not about making drastic changes that will be hard to maintain. It’s often the small changes that make a big difference. The program asks you to track your food intake. It seems like such a simple thing, but writing down what you eat is a huge thing, and I believe one of the most important things. It really makes you think about what and why you’re eating.

Are there any cities/venues you’d love to perform in one day that you haven’t already?

I’d love to perform in New York or London with my band. I’ve sung with Dad over there, but I’d love to do my own shows there. Also Tokyo! I love that city. I went for the first time a couple of years ago. I would really love the opportunity to get over there with my band. Really, everywhere, anywhere that’ll have us!

What are three of your aspirations for the coming couple of years?

To put out another record with my band in the near future. To get to do some shows overseas with my band. To get to goal weight (it’s so close now!) and really start to maintain and enjoy this new healthier lifestyle that I’ve been earning on Weight Watchers. It has really reinforced my passion for food so I’m determined to venture more into the cooking world − maybe a cook book or something along those lines.

at Mesiti is one person who understands what a rut is, and how to go about getting out of it. He grew up in a volatile home riddled with alcoholism, endured

a marriage break down, and “For 18 months I battled and struggled with the deepest darkest depression. Three times I tried to commit suicide. Fortunately I failed.”

Upon a decision to start fresh, he turned his life around − so much so, he’s now a self-made millionaire, world renowned motivational speaker, author of eight books (the latest being Pathway to Prosperity), and has even raised over half a million dollars for charity.

Whether the love of your life has left you, you’re not happy with your body, you’ve lost your job, or you just feel stuck in a rut, there comes a time in everybody’s life when starting fresh is the only (positive) option. Pat explains, “We all have to realise that in life, setbacks and failures are common to everyone.”

If your life is in need of a Spring clean, here’s what you could consider as part of a moving on towards happiness action plan:

mindset expert, Pat mesiti, shares five top tips on how to get yourself out of a rut in time for Spring

Ask yourself, what is it that i can control? There are some things you will never be able to control. However, you’ve got to look at what you can control.

look at the worst case scenario and ask yourself, ‘how bad is it really?’ Many of us lose perspective in a crisis.

We need to realise that all of us, when it comes to our setbacks, need to envision what’s possible in the future. We need to explore other options. We need to evaluate the situation and see if it’s going to really work.

We need to execute a plan for our future. You can’t get out of where you are without a

your lifeplan. You can’t get out of what you are without exploring options.

We need to realise in these words: “This too shall pass”. no crisis lasts forever. Understand that one of the greatest things that you can learn in the crisis when you’re feeling lost is that how you leave the situation will determine how you enter the next.

What has your journey been like with mambo?

I signed with Mambo for their Christmas campaign last December and I was lucky enough to re-sign with them as the face of the 2013 winter campaign. Mambo is such an iconic Australian brand that we have all grown up with. It’s a privilege to be part of the Mambo Goddess ‘club’ and work with the Mambo team who are all lovely and so creative.

you’ve followed your sister’s footsteps as a mambo goddess; did you wear the brand as a kid?

I love sharing this experience with Jess. Some of Australia’s most gorgeous faces have been Mambo Goddesses over the years − Jodhi Meares, Cheyenne Tozzi, Jessica Gomes, Erin McNaught and Barbara Palvin − who I most recently shot the upcoming summer campaign alongside! Of course I wore Mambo! It wasn’t a Christmas without receiving my Mambo tees with the fun artwork. I lived in them!

earlier this year iconic label mambo signed australian model, ashley Hart, as the latest mambo goddess and face of the new women’s winter campaign. missy Robinson chats with ashley hot off the heels of a shoot…

When you’re not killing it as a supermodel, what do you like to get up to in your spare time?

That is very sweet, but I wouldn’t call myself a ‘supermodel’ I am so lucky to be doing such a rewarding job that I love. I get to travel around the world, and while I am busy, I still make time to teach meditation and yoga, which I am qualified in and is a big passion of mine. In my spare time I love to practice meditation and yoga, and spend time with my boyfriend, Buck, of course!

you’re currently based in lA, do you get back to oZ much?

LA is a great base. It is such a laidback and happy lifestyle here with gorgeous beaches and people − it reminds me of Australia. I come home as much as I can though as I have my family still there. I am lucky that I am working with an iconic Australian brand like Mambo who is based on the Australian

beaches, so I have more reason to come back home! Nothing is better than having the opportunity to shoot campaigns at home.

you’ve also just recently shot the goddess SS13/14 campaign (released August) with Hungarian victoria Secret Angel, Barbara palvin, you guys looked like you had so much fun. Do you have the best job in the world?!

It was so so fun! Barbara is gorgeous and the Mambo team are so easy to work with − it was a full day shoot yet didn’t seem like work – and I think you can see this when looking at the campaign images. Modelling can sometimes mean a lot of travelling and long hours – but when you get the opportunity to shoot with a hugely loved, laidback and respected brand like Mambo, it makes me realise how lucky I am.

What are you top five styling tips?Wear what makes you feel good! It is

important to feel good in what you wear so you enjoy it and are confident − this shines through even when you don’t realise. Own your own style – fashion is so much fun, especially when people wear things their own way. I love to mix girly with tomboyish pieces. So, often in pretty dresses with sneakers or something. Colour! I think adding colour to your wardrobe brightens up your day. The Mambo collections also have lots of colour and gorgeous prints – you can’t not be happy when wearing them. Wear everything with a smile. A smile makes people feel good and it is the best compliment for every outfit! A smile can’t ever go wrong.

spent over ten years in and out of destructive relationships, believing that each time they failed it was because of something that I

had done, or not done. If only I had been sexier, skinnier, less demanding, more demanding...

I truly believed the reason they hadn’t fallen for me or had fallen out of love with me was because of something that I had yet to change about myself.

I don’t know if I was born with this self-doubt or whether it manifested from being in relationships where I wasn’t valued. It was a vicious circle, and a downward spiral of

insecurity and despair. It became exhausting, and constantly blaming myself for not being what that guy wanted left me hating myself and wondering who I really was. At the time, to help me understand what I thought I was doing wrong, I analysed every detail on dating and men, in books, in movies, via my friends and parents − the psychology behind it fascinated me. Sadly, on a number of occasions these failed relationships led me to some pretty dark places, which only now do I recognise were my first signs of depression.

It was by chance that five years ago I

found myself in a beautiful relationship, with a sweet and caring guy who was everything I had always wanted. All my insecurities drifted away and for almost two years I was on cloud nine with not a worry in the world. It crept up slowly, but as time went by I seemed to be getting increasingly over-emotional, anxious, and my confidence soon started to plummet again. I started to question why someone would love me and why they would want to be with me. I didn’t enjoy social events anymore; I felt I was boring and that people were constantly judging me. My work life also

started to suffer; I had little energy and lacked any enthusiasm which soon started to show.

One day a close friend and my partner took me out for a seemingly innocent coffee. They told me outright that they thought I might have depression; I told them I was fine. They told me I would have nothing to lose and if my doctor didn’t think I had depression, she might still be able to help me find the answers to my problems. I now know that my previous bad relationships were not necessarily the cause of my depression, but these negative interactions provided a trigger

that would send me on this downward spiral. They would feed my lack of self-esteem and provide a situation for me to pin my emotions onto. I thought if I found the love of my life that all my worries would dissipate. It was the case when I did find him, but the pain and struggle with everyday life persisted, and eventually I admitted that it might go a

little deeper. A week later I was, not surprisingly, diagnosed, and it was ironically the best thing that

ever happened to me. With the help of both a

psychologist and some medication, I was finally on the road to recovery.

After diagnosis I decided to become a dating coach so I could put to use all that information I absorbed about relationships and men. I now teach women, through my coaching and writing, that both confidence and self-respect are some of the most important traits essential for keeping your sanity on the dating scene. Not surprisingly, they are also rated in the top three things that men find sexy in women! I want to be that positive influence for women, to show them that it’s attitude not (physical) attributes that will get a guy to fall for you; It’s not about having flawless skin, the latest look

depression

It [depression] is not something you can talk yourself out of.

or reaching your ‘perfect’ weight. I wish I had known this when I was single and falling in and out of fragmented relationships.

Things could have turned out very differently for me of course, but despite the pitfalls and heartache of dealing with bad relationships and depression, it all worked out for me in the end. If it hadn’t been for that trail of bad relationships, I wouldn’t have spent countless hours over-analysing and researching human behaviour. Without this, then I certainly wouldn’t have the experience and the empathy that I do now; and I certainly wouldn’t be in the position to help women feel empowered and inspired through my work. If it hadn’t been for that friend having the understanding and courage to tell me that something wasn’t quite right, I may have lost my job, my boyfriend, or maybe even worse.

Depression is not a life sentence, but it’s not something you can control. It is not something you can talk yourself out of. It’s not something you can fix on your own or ignore until it gets better. It does not

mean you’re weak and it does not mean you’re failing at life. All it may mean is that you are lacking certain chemicals in your body that others take for granted. It’s no different than if you had any other medical condition. Would you expect a diabetic to manage their own blood sugar? Or would you demand an asthmatic to control of their breathing?

One in five Australians aged 16 to 85 will experience a mental illness this year; That means either you or a close friend may already be showing (and/or feeling) symptoms. Take that first step today to help turn someone’s future around − or even help yourself − to have that future you never dreamed was possible, as is the situation for me.

1. A rosy origin: Aside from their blossoming and vibrant rosy colour, Rosehips are the berry fruits of the dog rose (Rosa Canina). Their species is native to Scandinavia (Rosehip is grown best in cold weather conditions) and has been used for centuries as a health remedy.

2. natural dose of vitamin c: Rosehip is one of nature’s most natural sources of Vitamin C. The Rosehip plant’s deep-root system allows the berries to absorb vitamins and minerals, making it contain one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C. Furthermore, the natural vitamin C found in the Rosehip plant is absorbed in the body more effectively than synthetic vitamin C.

3. powerful anti-oxidant with mix of nutrients: Apart from vitamin C, Rosehip also delivers the benefits of vitamins A and E making it a very powerful antioxidant.

4. omega 3 Benefits: Rosehip contains Omega-3 Fatty Acids which are known to have a number of health benefits including helping to reduce inflammation in the body.

5. Helps combat inflammation and Arthritis: Rosehip in a standardised powder form is scientifically demonstrated to help reduce joint inflammation, swelling and pain associated with Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatism. The standardised Rosehip powder has been clinically tested to improve symptoms of discomfort and inflammation associated with these conditions, and as a result, may reduce the need for painkillers. Speak to your doctor before altering your medication.

6. Scientific powerhouse: A study (Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology, 2005) on a standardised Rosehip powder indicated that 82 per cent of Osteoarthritis patients had a reduction in pain after three weeks of treatment with the powder.

7. look out for gopo. This is the key compound which is activated during the special drying process of the Rosehip which acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. Only one Rosehip product in Australia activates this special compound. Try Rose-Hip Vital with GOPO (rosehipvital.com.au).

8. Sleep well with rosehip. Those struggling to combat joint pains and aches often have to fight for a good night’s sleep. Patients who’ve taken Rosehip powder with GOPO for long periods of time have noticed improved sleeping patterns and reduced morning stiffness.

9. protect cartilage. According to a scientific study (biomedcentral.com/1472-6882/11/105), a standardised Rosehip powder may help protect the cartilage cells which facilitate joint movement, allowing for more flexibility and mobility.

10. Well tolerated and non-allergen. If you’re wondering about the additives in Rosehip you can lay fears to rest. Rosehip powder is free from wheat, diary, sugar, shellfish, lactose, GM ingredients and preservatives. It is also 100 per cent plant based and suitable for vegans.

11. Better skin with rosehip. Rosehip has always been a popular ingredient in skincare, with its potent regenerative properties aiding in hydration, scarring, and irritations. Want to nourish your skin

and achieve a radiant glow? Time to stock up on Rosehip.

12. exercise with energy. Now you have one less excuse for not being active. The Vitamin C found in Rosehip can promote energy and help improve general wellbeing, encouraging exercise and movement.

13. Sustainable Health: Rosehip in a standardised powder form is 100 per cent pure and natural plant based, free from animal products, making it a sustainable health option for the natural management of inflammation. A comparative meta-analysis of 1220 people demonstrated that Rosehip in a standardised powder form was more efficacious than glucosamine hydrochloride in the treatment of Osteoarthritic pain (Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology, 2005).

Chris mcLeay enters a world of delicious decadence in our own backyard, with a staycation at Palazzo Versace and a unique Chef masterclass experience

rom the moment you enter into the marbled foyer of Palazzo Versace, it is clear to see no expense has been spared. The prestigious hotel (located at Main Beach)

boasts floor to ceiling glass windows that lead to stunning water views. Versace furnishings adorn the lavishly coloured entrance that exudes class and style.

I was thrilled to be here, invited to attend one of Palazzo Versace’s Chef Masterclasses. The classes are run by one of Palazzo Versace’s talented pool of chefs, with Vanitas Restaurant Chef de Cuisine, Paul Froggatt, leading the Masterclass I was to attend.

My experience began the night before as I stopped-over in one of the Superior Suites that overlooks the pool area on the first floor. The luxurious space is elegant, with the neutral colour scheme delivering a sense of supreme relaxation. The Italian marble bathroom is brimming with Versace-branded personal accessories that will ensure you are pampered throughout a stay.

Palazzo Versace offers several dining options that cater to all kinds of appetites. My dining choice, Il Barrocco, was welcomed by my partner. We enjoyed the buffet that was overflowing with an array of culinary delights and presenting only the freshest of local seafood. The dessert buffet is a sweet tooth’s delight, and as I moved towards the display, I reluctantly accepted the warning of moderation from my partner.

After the sumptuous meal we relaxed in the hotel lobby bar, Le Jardin, where I sampled one of the boutique beers on offer from the extensive menu, while my partner indulged in her favourite, Lychee Martini. It would have been easy to carry on enjoying ourselves in the

bar, but cooler heads prevailed. I was looking forward to the Masterclass, which after all, was why I was here.

As I rose at 7am and opened the heavy Versace curtains, I was greeted with a rolling mist of fog that hovered over the pool just outside my door. I made sure I had time to revisit Il Barrocco for breakfast, which I was looking forward to. I managed a quick bite before meeting the other participants in the hotel foyer and once again food was offered. Delicate French pastries and coffees were delivered as we ran through the morning’s briefing.

The other participants were all as excited as I was as we made our way through the hotel and over to the Marina Mirage Farmers Markets. Here we walked through the markets

and sourced produce which we would later see being prepared by Paul at the Masterclass.

After enjoying our market tour, we were all ushered back to Vanitas where the restaurant had been transformed into an amphitheater for culinary art. Paul was about to run us through the day’s theme, ‘How to throw the Perfect Dinner Party’. The plan was to start with canapés through to entrée, main and finish with a hand-crafted dessert. The bonus of ‘sampling as we go’ sat well with the enthusiastic crowd.

All the guests were issued with recipe cards so we could see exactly how Paul constructed his dishes. Being an interactive cooking demonstration, Paul was kept on his toes answering some great questions from the crowd. We all took notes and heeded Paul’s

September 201333

message that creating an amazing dinner party does not have to be difficult. He suggested making dishes that would allow you to attend your party, rather than being stuck in the kitchen while your guests have fun without you.

Once the demonstration wrapped up, all guests were directed to the grand dining table where we had our lunch. We were to taste the menu that we had just been shown how to construct. The entrée of Soy marinated Tuna with Dukkah Spice and Olive Oil was delicious and an interesting mix of flavours that worked well together. The main dish, Poached Chicken Breast with Sage Crust and Potato Gnocchi was so juicy and tender, and all I saw was nodding heads of appreciation around the table as the plates were almost licked clean. Dessert of Churros, Lemon Curd and Tea Ice Cream was a mix of bitter sweet that hit the spot. The whole menu was carefully designed and the comments from the satisfied customers reflected the day’s offerings.

My experience at Palazzo Versace was fantastic. The staff are attentive and professional, and it is not hard to see why Palazzo Versace is the benchmark for high-end hotels in Australia.

The Cooking Masterclasses are an excellent way to learn or hone your culinary skills, and are run every second Saturday of the month (throughout 2013). Classes are $195 and include the Marina Mirage Farmers Market Tour, Cooking Masterclass and a fantastic meal including wines complementing the day’s theme. Find out more: palazzoversace.com.au

What are some of the coolest things you’ve been able to do over the past year thanks to your involvement with gold coast volkswagen as their ambassador?

To drive the fantastic cars! I’ve always loved Volkswagen and by being the Gold Coast ambassador I’ve had a chance to try all the cars.

your Body Blitz (bateupbodyblitz.com.au) team all drive volkswagens too, what are their favourites?

We have so many Volkswagens betweens us it’s unbelievable! I guess the Blitzer’s would say their Volkswagen is the team’s favourite. We have lots of Golf’s and Golf GTI’s amongst us, Polos and Polo GTI’s, Eos convertibles, Tiguans and Passats. It’s great turning up to training seeing the fleet there. What is there not to love about the Volkswagens? They look great, they have got a lot of go in them, they are sporty and yet really practical and an affordable German car.

tell us something about driving a volkswagen that we might not know?

They are so sporty yet modern and I love that I can fit so much in there. As a professional athlete and also a personal trainer I need to have a lot of gear with me and all of the cars are so roomy inside. I drive a lot so diesel with the ‘blue motion’ means the car is reliable, economical and yet has all the mod cons − and they look hot!

What’s your favourite drive in or around the gold coast?

I love cruising in my Volkswagen down around Currumbin Valley or Currumbin Alley!

> tania Webbern, general managerHas worked at Gold Coast Volkswagen for

nearly 15 yearsWhat’s your favourite vehicle? Hard to

choose but the Eos hard-top convertible is my emotional choice. It’s sporty and robust but certainly has all the bells and whistles us ladies like, but being a turbo it’s so quick − it’s a little wolf in sheep’s clothes. I like the roof down with my butt-warmers on.

What’s your number one reason for promoting to people they should buy a volkswagen? We are a brand built on tradition and heritage. I like this history of the company and its longstanding deeply entrenched values as it’s in sync with those family values at James Frizelle’s. Between the two companies it all translates to a quality product offered with good old fashioned customer service. All of which I pride myself on providing to our customers. I have a great team who all work toward the shared goal of offering this service to our VW and Skoda Family.

What’s your favourite vehicle? VW Tiguan − it is such a versatile vehicle, compact on the outside but plenty of room on the inside. Easy to park and great visibility being that bit higher off the ground.

What’s your number one reason for promoting to people they should buy a volkswagen? German engineering − you can’t beat it.

the Beetle and Golf Cabriolet, I think they’re fun and different! They have their own style and I love to drive them.

What’s your number one reason for promoting to people they should

Where’s your favourite place on the gc to drive your volkswagen to? Driving around Springbrook is the best, I love the way my VW sticks to those windy roads.

Alltrack with the Tiguan, CC and Golf, 7 close behind. The Passat Alltrack just has everything included you could think of at a good price. The diesel AWD with extra ground clearance makes it a great all rounder vehicle that doesn’t feel like a big car to drive. Plus the little luxuries like touch tail gate, you can fold the seats down from the boot, rear view camera and Sat Nav, and electric, leather seats all inclusive. I love selling this car!

What’s your number one reason for promoting to people they should buy a volkswagen? Solid, safe and well engineered cars; value for money.

DIGITALSUCCESS with Sarah Blinco

1 Learn the difference between a Facebook profile and Facebook page. This is particularly relevant for those of you who manage a ‘business page’. Remember, when you’re ‘in’ Facebook (facebook.com), you’ll note your name (eg. Sarah) in the top right hand corner of the screen. This means you’re dwelling within your personal profile (the feed designed to share with family and friends). When your name is up the top and you write (post) an update or share an image, you’re sharing within your personal profile. To change (toggle) to a (business/hobby/organisational) page you manage, you need to select the button to the right of your name (looks like a little spinning wheel), and you’ll be presented with an option to “use Facebook as”. Select your page option, and post accordingly. This page will host information that is relevant/useful/fun/engaging for the professional/interested audience following your business space as fans (that is, they’ve likeD your page).

Remember, if you are creating or hosting a Facebook space for anything other than personal use, do not utilise a profile (where users need to request being your friend); you should have a page where users have the chance to like it, as you’ve most certainly liked other pages on Facebook yourself. Start here to create a Facebook page: Facebook.com/pages/create/

2 Don’t just use youtube to browse videos of interest, set up an account and make the most of the platform. YouTube (youtube.com) is owned by Google, so to create an account on this video sharing site, you’ll need to have an account with Google too. If you’ve already got one, simply sign in to Google (follow the sign-in prompts from either Google or YouTube), and add any personal profile identifiers you like (profile picture, contact details, web links and so on). Alternatively, from YouTube, follow

the sign-in options, and you’ll be redirected to Google (Google+) to finalise some basic information about yourself. You can choose to add as little or as much as you like, but effectively, once you’ve organised yourself a sign-in, you’re set to go. You’ll note in the top right hand corner of Google+, a Google search or in YouTube, your name will now appear. Now, as you watch YouTube, you can subscribe to channels that play clips that interest you, whether these be work, sport, hobby or interest related. For example, as I come across them, I follow channels that post videos about travel, fashion, magazines, Yoga and meditation. Each time you visit YouTube.com, your home-screen will resemble Facebook a little, in that it will now consist of a newsfeed promoting videos from channels you like, and is therefore a customised experience that you can learn from and enjoy simultaneously.

Tip: Search for a clip within YouTube.com, “how to set up a YouTube account”, for step-by-step instructions that will have you organised with your very own YouTube channel in under ten minutes.

3 Use Facebook to learn about new things. Have you liked many pages on Facebook? Liking pages by businesses, people, organisations or even television series’ means their updates will appear in your own news stream, and you’ll be entirely up-to-date with what’s being presented as news in cyberspace, whether it be about the brand new season of The Vampire Diaries or the latest on the election − whatever floats your boat!

4 Sign up for mashable’s (mashable.com) email subscription, or follow on social media. This is one of the world’s best news sources on all things tech and digital, but the stories are presented in such a way that you’ll learn something every day, whether you’re a novice or an IT pro. Additionally, discover laurel

papworth’s (laurelpapworth.com) spaces and connect with her online. She is one of Australia’s leading social media experts and has been presenting at the forefront of this interesting industry for many years.

5 Now you’re feeling your way around the social media space, start sharing with friends and followers. You could share videos, news stories, interesting features and funny images. If you notice the URL (website address) of the page you’d like to share is really long however, utilise a service called tinyurl (tinyURL.com). Here you can input your lengthy web address (which you would have copied from the original site you wish to share) and it will generate a ‘tiny’ address, ideal for sharing, making you appear super ‘social’ as you post clean, succinct (one to two sentences) updates and links.

6 Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube... whatever you’re using − or considering trying − keep it ‘social’ (it’s “social media”, after all). This means increase engagement with other users (friends or fans) and support people who are doing something that’s funny/new/engaging/interesting − it makes a huge difference when you like, share or comment, so take two seconds to do it if something stops you in your tracks − it’s good (social media) karma.

By the same token, being ‘social’ means reducing regular complaining and negativity in the public space, as well as excessive posting of wedding (or Bridezilla) updates, or baby, kids and PDA images. Apologies to any inadvertent “over-sharing” offenders, but it’s good to keep this social media etiquette in mind so you don’t see friends dropping off your radar.

With advances in digital technology moving nearly as swiftly as the speed of light, sometimes it really is difficult to keep up. Here’s a social cheat sheet − aim to try at least three of these out this month...

roovy music, spacious surroundings, absolutely lovely staff, and an easy vibe are just a few of the things I’d

forgotten I liked about this place. I stopped in for lunch while working in the area recently, and already hope to return soon. The only challenging part of the experience is actually choosing what to eat from the BJ’s Restaurant menu. I scoured the wide array of options to an enjoyable soundtrack of Icehouse and Escape Club, as other happy revellers − groups of friends and family units − gossiped and laughed around me.

Did you know BJ’s offers a delicious lunch menu selection? Order a main for just $12, two courses for $15 or three (if you’re extra hungry, or just interested to try more of what’s on offer) for $20. You might select a combination of the soup of the day and Ol’ English Bangers and Mash, or perhaps a Chicken Schnitzel or Beer Battered Barramundi. It all sounds good − best of luck deciding!

The general menu includes breads, salads, grills, seafood, pasta, fish and of course, a delightful range for the kids. If you can handle it, there’s a coffee, tea and liqueur-coffee menu, and desserts − Coffee-Garlic Brulee (I know, but you have to try it to believe how amazing it is) , fresh cheesecake and lots more. Yummy.

However, the Lunch Specialities menu is what captured my rumbling tummy’s attention. There’s a choice of Sweet Corn Fritters with rocket and parmesan complimented with a spicy chutney, Fresh Prawn and Apple served with a lemon and

cocktail sauce just to name a few.

I’m not actually a ‘seafood person’ (I do however, “see food and love to eat it”); but there was something about the garlic prawns with jasmine rice and crusty bread that had me, so I decided to try something different and went for it.

Turned out it was a bright move. The creamy galliano infused dish really set the taste-buds into a satisfied frenzy and the prawns were delicious, encased in just the right amount of sauce. The perfectly cooked jasmine rice and extra delight of crusty bread strips to collect the remaining sauce made me feel it would be rude to leave food on the plate. The meal was light enough to not have me feeling like an afternoon nanna-nap was in order, but at the same time hearty, fulfilling all foodie cravings that had emerged on this busy, chilly day. Overall, really delicious and highly recommended.

If you enjoy a venue with a warm atmosphere and substantial, scrumptious (not to mention excellent value) menu, add this spot to your ‘to visit’ list today. If you’re in the area frequently and could see yourself as a ‘regular’ here, sign up for the new 5-Star Rewards programme − just $5 for the year (or $10 for three years). Essentially, every dollar you spend gives you points which are

he eclectic style of Baritalia’s decor has helped to establish this restaurant as a regular haunt for locals and tourists

alike in the heart of Surfers Paradise. The bookcases are stacked with cookbooks that beg to be read while you sit and enjoy a freshly roasted coffee.

Owners Simon Vella and Stacey Cameron have adorned their business with decor that inspires the foodie in all of us.

The painted metal chairs seem like they arrived straight off the plane from an Italian café and the faux grass bench seats are strategically placed, adding a splash of colour.

From the Italian tomato tins that hold the neatly wrapped cutlery, to the cooks’ pot that houses the climbing rose garden, Baritalia provides a relaxed comfortable atmosphere with a rustic outdoorsy feel.

The cuisine is Italian by nature and each dish has been carefully produced with a modernised twist that must be tasted to truly appreciate.

When I dropped in for lunch at Baritalia, I sampled one of the pastas from the $18 Pasta e Vino menu. The special menu includes a glass of red or white wine and runs Monday to Thursday; lunch through to dinner. The Macaroni and Cheese was delicious, full of flavour and had the long stringy cheese that gets caught on your chin. It was served in a ceramic bowl on top of a wooden chopping board, adding to the charming character of the place. The accompanying glass of chardonnay was bold, fruity and a wise choice on a warm day.

The menu has been slightly revamped to reflect the season; all the while staying true to the modern Italian theme.

The chalkboard specials are updated weekly and offer some culinary delights. The tried and tested antipasti menu is perfect for customers to enjoy, while lounging in one of the deceivingly comfortable wooden bench seats that wrap around the restaurants façade. The hand-made wooden tables have a generous amount of space so that when your meal arrives, you have room to enjoy it. Every inch of Baritalia has been carefully constructed with the customer in mind.

Baritalia is fully licensed and offers Italian wines and beers, along with selected Australian varieties. The cocktail menu is large and has all the favourites you would

expect; the Italian Sour, the Milano Punch and some new talent like the Aperol Spritz.

The alfresco setting really sets this restaurant apart. In the afternoon the north easterly facing spot catches the best of the afternoon sun, making it the perfect place for an ice-cold Peroni straight from the tap.

Baritalia is open seven days a week from 8am till late. For more information visit- baritaliagoldcoast.com.au

SUCCESS with Sarah Blinco

What’s your background; what brought you to this new endeavour?

I have an IT / accounting background, which doesn’t sound all that exciting, but it gave me the opportunity to work for the European Headquarters of an American company and travel all around Europe to work on their accounting systems. It also meant I was able to surf in France, Morocco, Spain, Portugal and even Italy and The Netherlands.

How did you come up with the idea for Surfcareers.com?

When I returned from Europe I started up a recruitment business specialising in accounting systems personnel; my business partner had started up a job website in the accounting systems niche as well − we ended up developing those sites and then selling them. After a few years away from the job website game I am now combining my skills with my passion which is surfing.

Who is your target market; how does the site work?

Our target market is anyone who has a passion for surfing, combining a career with a passion leads to a higher level of job satisfaction for employees. We are not limiting the types of jobs on the site, we have had jobs for chefs in the Mentawai Islands, Surf Instructors in Morocco, but then we also have retail staff positions in suburban Melbourne. Employers sign up for a membership and can post jobs, search through our growing resume database, set up resume alerts and post news and information about their company and why people should work for them. Job Seekers can apply for jobs, create an resume that employers can browse and set up job alerts so they are notified as soon as their dream job is posted on SurfCareers.com

What has the response been like so far?

Overwhelming. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the positive response and feedback we’ve been getting from people

all over the world as well as the number of jobs, applications and resumes being posted already.

What are a couple of your best tips for using the site to score a dream job?

There are two things a job seeker can do to ensure they are in with the best chance of getting their dream job. Number one, sign up for a job alert, this way when new jobs appear on the site you are emailed to notify you. And two, not all jobs are posted on the site, some employers prefer to search the resume database, so job seekers should create a resume on the site.

As an entrepreneur, what are you most excited about with regards to this particular business?

While in the planning and development phase you aren’t getting much feedback from others on your idea and while you think you have a great idea it’s not yet validated. It’s not until you release it into the wild and start getting feedback from others do you

really see whether an idea has potential. Fortunately SurfCareers.com is starting off exceptionally well.

What advice do you have for other young entrepreneurs looking to start an online (or any) business?

Try and get your project live as fast as possible, don’t worry about all the bells and whistles before launch. Once launched you can flesh out your product once you see there is interest for it. Start marketing before launch, that way when you do launch you have a platform to start from. SurfCareers.com for example had over 10,000 Facebook fans at launch, 20,000 Pinterest followers, 2200 Instagram followers and 800 twitter followers. We knew before launching that there was a demand and an interest. Plus we have immediate targeted traffic we can push to the site. Ensure your start-up is in an area that you have a passion for. Start-ups take a lot of time and energy, if you love what you are doing then it doesn’t seem like work.

REALLIFE with Chris Mcleay

rawn 2 Life is a not-for-profit group specialising in bringing smiles to the community through the various costumes

they wear at charitable events throughout south-east Queensland. It seems that attending an event as a recognisable character is an ideal way to interact and raise support for any charity that needs assistance.

Executive Officer, Matthew Zydeveld (aka Renaissance Turtle), tells me the concept of forming a troop of likeminded costuming enthusiasts was a born out of necessity. “There was a massive desire within the world of costuming for people to get out there to try and make a difference,” he explains.

Aaron Watson, Alex Hollingsworth and Aly Williams conceived the original concept of Drawn 2 Life in early 2012. The trio noticed a void in organisations that allowed for high quality, authentic costuming throughout Queensland. The 501st Legion, although a terrific troop, only represent Star Wars and therefore a niche market. On this realisation, the newly formed Drawn 2 Life team sprung into action faster than a speeding bullet, and created a unit that would appeal to the masses. Since the launch in June of 2012, the team has steadily grown and currently boasts 25 active members.

In total there are 37 different costumes and characters the team has access to, and the Drawn

Batman, Superman and Spiderman are all names synonymous with saving the day, and as Chris mcleay discovers, a few local heroes known under the umbrella of Drawn 2 Life, should be added to that list

2 Life website includes a database that houses a photo gallery of all that’s on offer for special events. Matthew says in the early days of Drawn 2 Life, the group focused mainly on superheroes and super-villains but in the past 13 months they have broadened the types of characters to cover a wider range of genres. All the favourites are there, including Spiderman, Superman, Captain America and Batman. Alice in Wonderland and Esmeralda from the Hunchback of Notre-Dame feature in the character line-up too.

The costumes are so detailed and accurate of the original character, that prices can range from $1000 to $5000 for a single one. To be a member of Drawn 2 Life requires dedication and an eye for detail; the willingness to become a role model, and of course the ability to fight the good fight! Costumes must be of the highest quality to make the encounter for crowds as real as possible. Suiting-up for an event can take upwards of an hour, but is worthwhile to see the reactions from enthusiastic supporters.

The Drawn 2 Life members attend any occasion where there is a chance to bring a little joy. Matthew recalls the most memorable event for the team so far has been the 4KQ 2012 Special Needs Children’s Christmas Party. The event embodied more than just raising money for an intended charity; it was about interacting with the children themselves and

seeing the smiles that the costumes could bring. A reflective testimonial from a member of Drawn 2 Life, Phoenix (Spider-Man), best sums up the experience: “It has taken me over a day to process this event. Firstly, the energy present at this event was phenomenal! The positivity shone from each and every individual there. We were all there with a purpose, to give those in need − children and families − a day they wouldn’t soon forget”.

It is not only the children that get a thrill from the troop’s efforts. “Quite often we’ll have many lone adults come up asking, ‘Is it ok if I have a photo with you? For my kids!’ We always wonder if the photo is really for their kids,” Matthew smiles.

The future is certainly bright for this innovative clan. The next major appearance for the team is a Relay for Life event being held in the region this month. A crew of 15 members will be walking throughout the night raising money and awareness. Matthew says it will be a wonderful team-building exercise and a lot of fun for both the Drawn 2 Life group and other event participants.

Drawn 2 Life continue to grow and are always on the lookout for likeminded costumers to join the fun. For more information on Drawn 2 Life and the wonderful impact they have on the community, visit drawn2life.com.au

LASTWORD with Sarah Blinco

5 minutes with eden Saul

Recently we were given word on a cool Currumbin local who shapes super custom surfboards and distributes clothing under the label Dead Kooks. evidently he’s not hard on the eye either.

SURFINSPIRED

Do you have a favourite of the boards you’ve designed?

At the moment, it’s my Nausea model log. It’s been a slow evolution and constant tweaking of rocker and outline but I’m really stoked on where that’s at right now. The Hellhound has been my other shape that I get a constant buzz off. It’s a singlefin with a bit of a teardrop outline and wing-pin tail. That’s a shape I’ve been playing with for a while and is my go-to board for a lot of waves here on the Coast.

What apparel do you distribute?I get ideas and bring in people with the

knowledge and know-how who are on the same wavelength to bounce designs off and make it all happen. We’ve done short runs of surf trunks with local brand Salty’s, and a bunch of tees. The range of tees was more

of an excuse for me to work with artists I admire. Getting to print original work by Ty Williams, Josh Galletly, Hannah Carrick and more recently working with Stevie Gee for the Save the Kimberly campaign has been really cool. Looking into the coming summer there are some exciting little collaborations and projects on the way.

When you’re not working, where can you be found?

I surf the southern points mostly and the local beaches around there. If there are no waves I’m out on my bike in the hinterland behind Currumbin, Springbrook and the Tweed Valley − that’s the best of the Coast right there. Then it’s coffee at Good Day Coffee or Barefoot.

in three words, what does the gold coast mean to you?

Right hand points.

you’re most looking forward to.... ?Doing more of what I’m doing. This year

has been a blast so far, it’s almost over but I’m trying to fit in as much as I can manage.
